Respect for learning the language, which isn't easy! Yes, a lot of Germans speak fluent English, but you still get a different sort of connection to a country when you speak the language. And of course it demonstrates that you invested a lot of time & work to be part of your second home.

Funny how all the people say: "The Germans are colder and more distanced than the people in my home country but after a while its getting better" like as if all Germans change as a group to your duration of stay. Don't they think, that they as foreigner are the ones that are intimidated by a Germans and the language and its getting better when they learn the language and how to "read" other people? I have the same feeling when I am visiting Italy, all the people are strangely looking at me and talking behind my back and seem not welcoming at all. But that is just MY interpretation of their appearance. We do not have a regular meeting where Germans decide who is long enough in the country to be treated nice and who is still on the "treat them with distance, they haven't earned our welcoming culture yet"-list.

A friend of mine, who came to study here from Canada and then stayed to work and live and now has dual citizenship, described it very nicely when it comes to germans 'not being friendly': In other countries, especially in north america, it is very easy to become 'acquaintances' beyond just being someone you know from work or stuff. But it's very hard to become actual friends. In Germany on the other hand, it's rather difficult to become 'acquaintances' with someone, especially when you don't make the first step. But from there to being a friend is half a step. I guess germans have just their priorities set different. I think being a tourist in Germany is not that much different than in other countries though.

When I emigrated from The Netherlands to Mexico the change of food was really an eyeopener. Positive in every way. It's my (mexican) wife who likes certain Dutch foods and she orders them online. Also many things are locally available so I can cook boerenkool, erwtensoep, etc. without any problem. We like Asian food and order the spices and condiments online. No problem.

In some ways, Germany is no different than any other country: its own language, its own habits, its own rules, its own humor, its own weather... So if I (as a German) travel to a foreign country ... I simply expect all this. And I know beforehand that "I will be the foreigner" and I have to adjust. I´m not surprised at all. Thus I wonder why all these points come up so frequently. Not that I´m angry, I just wonder.

I wouldn't call us cold necessarily. Reserved might be a better descriptor. We love our quiet lives and yes, being for ourselves most of the time. So most of us don't want to bother other people with unnecessary chitchat as well. But once we warm up to someone it's a whole other ballgame. :)

Be fair, Paperwork is also a challenge for Germans. One could now say, “but at least you know the language,” but bureaucratic German is a language in itself. They use administrative terms and assume that everyone has studied “administration” for at least one semester. This is a major weak point in our system, once that destroyed the Romans.

Otherwise, most germans are pretty welcoming. Maybe you shouldn´t go to munich as a representative of germany. Because munich is just an overgrown village, it´s maybe to consevative to be a representative for living in germany. Other parts of the country will be less cold and even more welcoming to the world. And yes, german bureaucracy may be only topped by the russians. It´s bad, very bad.

It is the national anthem of the United Kingdom!!! It is also one of the two national anthems of New Zealand and the royal anthem of all Commonwealth realms. It doesn't get much more British than that, does it!? Due to its federal structure, the German Empire did not have an official national anthem. Unofficially, however, after 1871 the „preußische Volkslied“ ("Prussian folk song") with the opening words "Heil' dir im Siegerkranz" (Hail to thee in the victor's wreath) prevailed and established itself as the "imperial anthem", which was played at patriotic celebrations.
