thanx for posting. I did not remember from Fates's book that Elaine actually had been a mystery guest. And thanks to Wally and Arlene the post-game interview is fantastic. "Company" was just about the best of Sondheim's early plays. Elaine was a force of nature who lived to almost 90 -- despite the problems with alcohol and tobacco [which she kicked for years].

1970 was the year that Sandy Dennis starred in a CBS sitcom called "Funny Face." It was on the way to being a hit, and then Sandy got struck down by an illness that left her blind in one eye.

Elaine had stage fright issues, which may account for why she [unusual for the 1970s but not the 50s] lit up a cigarette in her sequence

Gil Fates mentioned in his book that he was proud getting certain people on TV-syndicated WML when they were rather owlish. He mentioned in particular Alan Alda. This is two years before writer-producer Larry Gelbart had the blinding flash of genius to cast him in his new sitcom-drama "M*A*S*H".

how times have changed. thankfully we have gotten to the point where ANYONE lighting up in a public venue as a matter of course is considered arrogant and disrespectful to the vast majority who don't smoke.
