Wally Bruner was a nice, conversational host with a great sense of humor. Like his predecessor, John Daly, Bruner was a journalist for much of his career, but lacked the erudite style of Daly. (Likewise, this syndicated, daytime version of "What's My Line" was obviously much less formal than the black-tie version that aired on Sunday nights until its cancellation in 1967.) In addition, Bruner got on well with both the panel and the guests. It's now pretty much forgotten that "What's My Line" celebrated both ordinary people and celebrities.

This show ran more or less for 25 years from 1950 to 1975 taking approximately a one year break between CBS and syndication. But it has had no reboots in almost 50 years now, although a couple of pilots were allegedly filmed.

"Sign in. please" was a phrase that was an integral part of WML, as much as "What is your name" was to TTTT and "Come on Down" is to Price is Right. The phrases were even used in the British versions of those programs.

This no mystery guest cheapened the show. Manhattan has a slew of retired actors that would have loved to be the mystery guest. .

I think it was just because they did the same thing they did in the Sunday years. The MG usually showed up after the show started to make sure that no one would know who it was, and if they didn't show, the back stop was the moderator. John Daly never had to use it in his tenure, the final episode was more of a special case. In the syndicated days, where they were taped on weekday afternoons, it might have been more likely.

There may be lots of famous people (not just actors) in NYC, but that doesn't mean they can always find one to step in at the literal last minute.

In the original WML, at least one MG showed up at the very last minute. There can not be any backup plan if an MG does not show up because the show waits until the very last moment. So your comment is wrong.
