I loved the flowers in Dorothy's hair and liked the way they accented the flowery pattern of her dress, but I thought she looked like she was dressed for a summer lawn party. Odd garb for the beginning of February! Perhaps it was due to the "heat wave" of 42 degrees that John mentioned. I have noticed that in the middle of a very cold winter, as soon as the temperature goes above 40, some people have a tendency to go overboard by wearing shorts and such. Maybe this was Dorothy's much more elegant version of that kind of warm spell celebration.

Based on John's comments on the previous recent episodes, January 1965 had some brutal weather on Sundays in NYC. They had to brave snowstorms on three of them and bitter cold on another. A nice day with seasonal temperatures must have felt glorious. It also happens that Feb. 7 is about the mid point of winter.

Interesting sidebar: Floyd Paterson's manager (Cus Damato) never wanted Patterson to fight Sonny Liston because he ( Damato) knew Liston would mop up the floor with Patterson. But during a visit to the White House President Kennedy urged Patterson to fight Liston for the heavyweight championship. Liston defeated Patterson for the title in a little over 2 minutes in 1962 and then knocked him out in 1963 again in the first round.

I have read many comments about the various ways that the panelists and guests shake hands at the end of a segment. But I have never seen a comment on Dorothy's tendency to tilt her head to the left at the moment that she shakes hands. The very act of handshaking is a peaceful gesture. Since most people are right-handed (and thus the word "sinister" for left-handed developing a negative connotation), shaking hands was a way to show someone that you weren't holding a weapon in preparation to use it. According to what I read, tilting the head in the manner that Dorothy did is a further sign of peace, friendship and submission. It exposes more of the neck and throat to the other person, areas of vulnerability (windpipe, major blood vessels).

Lois Simmons A tilt when shaking hands is quite common and natural I think. Peter Cook did it too. I can even feel myself doing it with certain company! To me it has a sense of extra focus or concern.

There was a set of twins in the Air Force and were probably still in at the time this was taped. One of them went by the first name, "Buck." They were both officers, both made it to at least Major General, and I think they were both original Thunderbirds pilots when they were based at Luke AFB. They flew the wind positions. They may not have been original pilots of the 'Birds, but they were both on the team at the same time soon after they formed after WWII.

Wow! Marvin McNickle was the commander of the 13th Air Force which was HQ in the Philippines while I was there in '71-'72. He was a Lieutenant General by then. I never knew he had a twin brother among the General ranks (but then, how would I know? It's not like I hung out with him).

I can't see Dorothy as a hippie either. Too conservative and too ambitious. She might have gotten into some of the fashion elements that entered the mainstream as a result of the hippie movement, though. I can picture her with long, straight hair, love beads and/or a medallion, dangling earrings, and a fringed leather jacket over a brightly colored mini-dress, with go-go boots. Maybe a beaded headband and tinted glasses to complete the effect.

Joe Postove A Kilgallen column from 1965 indicated that she was familiar with the term "hippies." She evidently knew hippies were interested in much more than Bob Dylan. She cited their interest in extrasensory perception -- ESP. Therefore, Kilgallen wrote, they could enjoy the new Broadway musical On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. ESP is a plot point in it. Does anyone want to read her exact words in 1965? The twins look old enough to have started out in the Army Air Force before the separate branch of the Air Force was formed after WWII. However, since they were not West Point Boys, it seems unusual that they would reach the rank of Major General. I wonder if they started out at the bottom?

They actually did start out in the Army Air Corps! Melvin is my grandfather and Marvin is my Great Uncle :). They graduated from The University of South Dakota in June 1936 and received their wings in October 1937. In 1943, Melvin, Lieutenant Colonel at this time, was shot down over the German border and became a POW at Stalag Luft III until it was liberated in January of 1945.

Notice that Floyd Patterson referred to the then-heavyweight champion as "Cassius Clay." Muhammad Ali always considered that a personal affront, and he punished Patterson when they fought nine months later in Las Vegas. Ali could have finished Patterson at any time, but he deliberately made him go 12 rounds until the fight was stopped.

HAHAHA..Wrong! Ali couldnt have finished him anytime he wanted..In their 2nd bout(research it) Patterson was actually ahead on 2 cards before they stopped it in 7rounds because of his eye injury! Don't comment your opinion on a factual sport event..You probably don't even know that Ali actually quoted that out of all his opponents.. Floyd Patterson he felt was his "most skilled opponent". You can look up that fact as well. :)

This just in: Look what I found on the WML Facebook Group. s12.postimg.org/pqu0cowf0/092_March_02_1952.jpg A faded color photo from a lost episode. This one comes from episode #092 (March 02, 1952). This might have been from game 2, which had a female contestant who sells Hosiery. The male guest panelist filling in for Bennett Cerf is British actor Roland Young, who died a year later. This was his only WML appearance. The mystery guest that night was professional Boxer Joe Louis, also his only WML appearance.

They said that a surfboard cannot in any way be defined as an instrument. As far as I know there are not established rules on what constitutes an instrument on WML. So...is not a surfboard an instrument of locomotion (which is an act or the power of moving from place to place)? The waves propel the surfboard from place to place thereby making it an instrument of the waves. Is that not right?

Victor was the most clueless panelist ever. One thing that sometimes bothers me about this show is the fuss they make about donating the small amounts of money to charity, when the were paying celebrities performance fees of around $1000 a visit, I heard somewhere.

His schtick probably didn't seem so predictable at the time, given that his appearances were spaced out over several years. We see them all on KZbin in a compressed period and so the regular clueless bits, the "I can't see" bits and the forgetting to remove the blindfold bits seems more annoying than they probably did at the time.
