I hope that GIMP will receive on day the same treatment that MuseScore got. Their software now has a premium feel and is actually better in every single metric than other paid tools. I can just hope that the team over at gimp continues to deliver and eventually surpass some competitors

I think the biggest challenge facing GIMP is that Photoshop selection tools are very, very powerful. I was teaching PS to middle school kids and the quick select tool kept their frustration low. They are just kids🙂 Well Adobe Cloud crap, while we have it, can't be used for kids under 13 due to privacy laws, so I took a really hard look at GIMP. The difficulty with selecting areas may be a show stopper. And PS is using AI to do some amazing things. I hope GIMP can attract more developers.

Hello!! I recently started using Gimp since I wanted to do some light photo editing. There is one thing that really confuses me on Gimp’s workflow. Every time I apply a change to a layer ex. adding drop shadows or changing colour temperature, the change is applied without a problem. However, I’m really struggling to find a way to modify the actions I have already performed. For example if I decide to go back to colour temperature to modify the values I added before, I only see the default values on the menu. And in my understanding the program applies the new values on top of the old ones. There is no way to see and edit the values I had entered before. This is really confusing. The only solution to this that I’ve found is to keep undoing actions until you get to the specific action you want to redo. This means that you lose all the rest of the work and actions you have performed after editing colour temperature for example. I am pretty sure I’m missing something here. It should not work like that. I tried to look online but couldn’t find anything. I would really appreciate any help!
@Namearts9902
@Namearts9902 Жыл бұрын
Yes that happens every time we wanna make some changes in each layer even in texts. That is why I undo until I get the perfect edit. It is really annoying. Designing in gimp is really exhausting. But it is a way better option than paying for adobe softwares for someone who can't afford.

I just tried it out. 3 things frustrated me a LOT, and I quit it. For the record, I have the amazing photoshop theme installed called photogimp, because I'm used to Ps. Okay, so, the two things were: 1. I click the new layer button, and instead of getting a new layer and being to draw immediately, I get a menu. I press enter, it goes away. Great, then I go into the settings to see how I can make this *never* happen again. There is no setting for disabling that menu. At least none that I saw, and I looked hard for it. 2. I drew random lines for a bit while trying to get pressure sensitivity to work, then eventually wanted to delete that layer. Then I see like 4-5 layers that I did not manually create in the layer list. No problem, I'll just delete them. Click one, press delete key. Doesn't work. Maybe that layer type is different. So I click the layer I created and press the delete key. Nothing. What the fuck. Then I right click and press 'delete layer' on each one. 3. Getting pressure sensitivity to work wasn't just frustrating, it was downright stupid. I had gotten it to work previously in Gimp, then at some point updated my tablet's drivers, and because of that it was now no longer working, and I had to reset my input devices and [blah blah blah]. Extra - while having my cursor on 'screen' mode and my tablet on 'window' mode (to dampen the inherent acceleration that comes with having a non display tablet) I had two cursors on screen, one for the mouse and one for the tablet pen. This would not have been an issue, except for the fact that if the mouse cursor is in the layer menu let's say, you can not use your pen outside of the layer menu. This is incredibly stupid, the pen should stick to the canvas window. Also because of this, using the sliders is an absolute shit show. This is not usable for anyone looking to do more than draw stick figures. It's actively anti user. It feels horrible to use, because I can't just do what I need to do. Life is not long enough to have to navigate a menu each time I want to create or delete a layer. And no, I am not making a Git Lab account to tell the devs what's going on, I've done that before on other repositories and I always get dismissed so they can do less work. These issues are surface level and extremely obvious, they are not even worth reporting. They should have been fixed before the repository was ever even created.

There is another change in 2.10.34 that I was after. In 2.10.32 they introduced the ability to save to BigTIFF format. Unfortunately this was made a default that you could not change. Apart from GIMP, the various software I use doesn't understand BigTIFF, and so I had to remember to change the setting the first time I saved in a session. In 2.10.34 you still can't change the default, but the default now is standard TIFF rather than BigTIFF.

I realize GIMP is completely free, but am hoping there will be major upgrades for the impending 3.0 version. This is mainly for touching up photos, but for the likes of other free apps, such as CANVA and Adobe Express, not sure why they would want to hop on board with GIMP when these can do a good job for most of the average laymen

@@teacherswhocode1866 Perhaps in that case I'd rather go with something in between the two worlds, like Affinity Photo (it's my current tool for everything). Although I can only recommend Adobe for the younger ones who are aspiring to develop a career in the industry (in almost whatever 2D related industry). I'd be acting badly if doing otherwise. Me, I have used PS since 1995 (28 years using it... ouch)... Now, as a freelancer, I prefer low cost (Affinity suite, Clip Studio, etc) commercial tools and open source software (Blender, Krita, Gimp, Inskcape), as I have anyways pretty much the hang of Adobe and Autodesk software/UI (thanks to the companies I worked at), so I don't need "the training". Otherwise I'd do that first. But now... am allergic to subscriptions or paying large sums of money :D .

With each passing update, GIMP strays further and further away from features for digital artists. That and It somehow performs worse today, on M1 hardware than 2.6/2.8 used to do under OSX back in 2010. ( though i do appreciate not needing to launch an X server to get it to work anymore ) And yes, i know, the windows and macOS binaries are not the priority, and it's only gonna perform decently on GTK based DE's ( good luck with that with them completing the GTK3 port now that GNOME has dropped it entirely ) At this stage, and with the new roadmaps where they will no longer hold features for major releases past 3.0.X, i just hope they just start shedding features and focus entirely on photomanipulation ( and stop giving false hopes for artists ), or have a renaissance period like Blender did. It's not felt like a fully baked product ever since 2.8 came out. I'm still hopeful for it's future, and here's hope that once they go onto the new versioning scheme where they can just release things as soon as they're being worked on, development pace picks back up, but as someone who used it for everything, from drawing, pixel art for specific hardware configurations, photo editing, from 2009 to 2021, it pains me to see it get further and further behind.
