Excellent video! It's like you and I say constantly, don't just look straight ahead, look up, down and all around! You never know when you're going to stumble upon a new treasure. One of the things people don't think about is that Sicily was and it a major seaport! Places like islands were a place to quarantine sailors and others that might be sick or carry the plague.

In the Uk a former politician Michael Portillo has a TV programme showing destinations for a quick UK weekend Break ie 4 days. This week was sicily mainly around Palermo.30 mins further than Rome must be worth a try.

The government reports about 40% of the water is lost system wide before it gets to personal use. The center areas if Sicily are already in the beginning stages of desertification.

I hate to rain on your guide's parade but her view of drought is unrealistic. All of Southern Italy is experiencing a drying climate, not just pockets of Sicily. There are areas in Sicily that have had no rain for 14 months. No rain = desertification and underground aquifers cannot be recharged = no agriculture =higher food prices for imports. Lack of maintenance of infrastructure by various Comuni they say it is because there is no funding, has resulted in leaking pipes not repaired for years, so water is wasted and silted dams so when it does rain, little rain is captured. Sicily's biggest water catchment is Enna only 136 klm from Taormina. Agrigento just 200 klm away from Taormina, is in a water emergency. Water was turned off for 22 days. When it came back, it was dirty. While Taormina still hasn't experienced water shortages, it is not a guarantee for the future that it will remain that way. In fact, au contraire given nobody has the will to change anything.

Thank you for this very thoughtful comment. Yes of maintenance of infrastructure and leaping pipes are a huge problem. Here is another perspective about the drought with our friend Prof Rosario Faraci. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqWveWR6l715d7ssi=YUj_HF-zPbVgRsRE

@@YouMeandSicily Tourism does not cause or contribute to drought. The issue is agricultural practices that are out of sync with the cycles of how this planet works. Outmoded farming methods turn rain forests into deserts and that is what has happened all over the world, Farming is no different from mining. It's extractive. The Sicilian government, has kicked the can down the road for over 50 years making excuses. They could have been re-greening Sicily 20-30 years ago before it came to this point, when others started re-greening the Sahara desert. Al is right about those desalination plants. Today they are nothing but rust buckets and cannot be salvaged. So don't ask me where this 90M Euros are going to disappear to. Have you seen them? They have a short lifespan of 3-4 years and were abandoned after only 5 years. This video discusses what's happening in Canicatti and then Agrigento 5:48. Guides can be misinformed because while some tourist businesses stayed open, others did not like B & B owner in Agrigento at 9:44. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rV7HnZeoe556mq8

I've lived in Siracusa for a year and the mafia screw so many things up. Where has the 90million in subsidies gone to repair pipes etc?
