There is this instructor for the Explosives Technician Program, who used to opens his lectures with the following explanation: "We'll spend about half a day on how to blow up, what needs to be blown up. The rest of the two weeks we'll talk about how to not blow up, whatever we want to remain in place"

Well, some years ago it was decided to use explosives to take out a dam just up river from Fredericksburg, VA. It was a concrete structure. It was to be removed both to "restore the river" and because the structure was "deteriorating." After the smoke cleared from the blast the bridge was still intact. The second time was the charm in this case.

Sal, I was watching the army corps of engineers general on the AP channel yesterday. They did flood the first two compartments with 10,000 tons of water. This is so the ship would not move because the bridge structure is estimated at 4,000 tons so they wanted Ensure that there was no movement when they blew the bridge

@@jefferyyoung6836 they won't pump out the Dali water until they get rid of the starboard hard-up "pillar structure" pinning down the bow. Looks to me the Dali is still pinned to the Key bridge on the starboard side near the bow @ 6:52..."pillar structure" there are very large steel column girders impaled into the starboard Dali.

There was a tornado not too far from where I live that destroyed an entire neighborhood including a house where the owner had just baked a cake. She put it on a cake stand to cool and then left to run some errands. When she got back, her entire house was gone, but that cake, the cake stand, and the cabinet she'd sat it on were still perfectly intact. That cone reminds me of that cake.

That did not go the way I expected it to. They left the low end of the girder intact, and it looks like that obstructed the detached pieces from falling farther away from the ship. Some pieces hit the bottom and slid down the hull. So they likely have more work to do to get the iron away from there to get Dali free.

Remarkable what can be accomplished when you don't buy into excessive drama and just get to work getting the job done. Hats off to all the engineers working on this project. Administrations and politics can't do this work but they sure could have screwed up it's progress. Staying to the side and letting the work get done is about the best we could of hoped for and it seems to be working.

@@Utubegofukurself Probably true. I mean you can work pretty fast when you don't care about safety or environment. With that said, this project does seem to be progressing remarkably slow. Having worked in ship construction and been through many disasters from what I have seen normally something like this would have had sea traffic fully flowing in less than a week and the whole thing would have been clear by now. I don't know if it's a lack of resources, location, coordination, or ??? why it's taking so long.

@@_droid I'm not sure I follow. There hasn't been a bridge collapse of this magnitude In modern history to even compare to? I know of a few bridge disasters that took more lives, a few that took out larger Bridges, but nothing on the scale of a 2-mile roadway being dropped across every single channel for a major port. If they pull it off, they will have completely restored the channel access to the port within 60 days. And they had limited access long before that. Heck, the house that burned at the end of my street a year ago still hasn't been fixed by the contractors. I'm just surprised anything is done these days and anything less than a year.

Don't be so sure. Anything designed by humans can fail and at the worst time. Who was that, Murphy, who informed us long ago? I think all responsible parties should be looking for the next "opportunity" for a shipping disaster. In fact, the who ecosystem of shipping expects numerous disasters. The insurance system is built to spread the known risk.

Yes, noticed that this morning on another video I watched after I watched Captain Andy’s footage. I had to pause and go back to confirm what I’d seen- really gives you perspective to see 4 lanes of highway laying across the bow of a ship to realize how really massive modern container ships must be and how much business would normally be flowing through the port of Baltimore. Fascinating stuff and I’m learning tons from Sal and the other sources he recommends.

Hi Sal, I saw an interview with an Army spokesperson shortly after the detonation. He reported that additional water ballast had been added to the bow so that Dali would be less likely to move without the weight of the truss. He also stated that they wanted to remove the material that could be holding Dali so that she could be moved onto port and then remove the debris on the bow with equipment there. I don’t know the name of the Army person but it was on an interview on KZbin. Earlier views from Capt. Andy showed that all the windows of the ship’s bridge were covered with plywood…easier than replacing lots of glass. Thank you for all of your coverages of marine content.

@@NicolaW72 its sad but the only reason the cops were on location was because they were helping with traffic because of the construction. that was WHY they were able to block of the bridge the moment they got the call. it would have been all but impossible otherwise.

A couple points. The Coast Guard mentioned yesterday that Dali will be refloated with that roadway still in place. It will be removed once Dali is at the dock. Also, the limited channel is around 48 feet cleared at this point.

I have read and heard some very poor reporting on this. One that indicated they were going to blowup the whole bridge, another that indicated they would be blowing the bow of Dali off. I'm thankful that I can find the real story here in a concise form. There was another KZbinr who spent 20 minutes just explaining what they would be doing. Very frustrating! The only thing I am lacking is the schedule going forward and plan for further activities.

In terms of economic damage, a bigger issue for Baltimore than the potential loss of shipping traffic is the loss of a heavily trafficked major bridge that will take an eternity to replace.

There is the other half of the beltway, plus two harbor tunnels that are still fully functional. The Key bridge was never meant to be a major road. It was only supposed to be an alternate route for hazardous materials that weren’t allowed through the tunnels. And that was even before they built the I-95 tunnel.

@@ktrimbach5771wrong. It is a major route for people like myself who live on one side of the bridge and work on the other side. My commute used to be18 miles and now it’s 24 miles, which isn’t a big change, but now it takes me an hour to get to work instead of 20 minutes. Think about an Amazon employee who lives in Curtis Bay and has to drive all the way up and over and then back down to the other side of the shore when they used to have a 5 mile trip. On top of that is now the increase of accidents that occur because of bumper to bumper traffic and those hazmat trucks now have to go all the way around the west side of 695 to get back to 95 when going the other way over the key bridge is a shorter distance back to 95.

I agree Sal. It is hard to appreciate just how massive the Key Bridge was from all of the videos. I saw an article describing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as “the scariest bridge in America”. While the Bay Bridge is longer, both the decks of the Bay Bridge spans and the Key Bridge are/were 185 feet above the water.

Great report! US ACE knows how to blow things up. One of the biggest was the Birds Point Levee in MO, several years ago. If you haven't seen it, it's worth the search / watch. Thank you, Sal! I'll be in Baltimore at the end of the month with a Harbor tour. The BIG local/regional question is reconstructing the bridge. Recall that this was the eastern limb of the Baltimore Beltway, I-695, which provided toll-free passage around Baltimore (you pay a toll to use the tunnels which EXCLUDES HAZMAT carriers)!

The accident, the loss of life, the massive damage, and the effort to remove the bridge and clear the channel, bring to mind two somber events in our history: The terror attacks on 9/11, in New York and the D.C. area, and the attack on Pearl Harbor, in 1941. In both instances, the terrible scenes of death and destruction, and the importance of clearing up the wreckage, and finding the bodies of those who were killed. One remembers as well, the constant air raids on London during the war, and the resulting death and destruction. The London Fire Brigade faced these grim events on a daily basis. Hats off to all those who respond to such tragedies, wherever they occur, whether in time of peace or time of war.

"We didn't see Dali move at all." Actually, we did. (See comments on the Minorcan Mullet videos) The bow of the Dali rose up after the charges were detonated, between eighteen inches and three feet (one-half to one meter). It can only be seen using reference marks before and after. One of these is the upper-right-hand corner of the solar panel in the foreground. Before detonation, it is exactly in line with the upper gunnel edge; after the smoke clears, there is a slim line of dark blue hull or gunnel visible above that corner of the solar panel.

Well done, I believe. Another aspect is, HazMat containers are required to be stowed in the forward sections of container ships. So, using kinetic energy was risky if that is where HazMat containers were stowed. Gutsy. Excellent demolition work; very clean cuts and efficient.

Orange cones are an invasive species that cause a lot of damage to roads. Wherever you see those cones, there is damage to roads and usualy require heavy digging equipment to tear up the road to get to the roots of the orange cone 🙂 I assume they've made bouyancy calculations to know at what point of removing debris will cause the bow to stat to lift (unless it is flooded and removing weight of bridge won't cause it to rise up). Once they get to near neurral bouyancy, will be interesting to see how their work to lift pieces that will change bow from negative to positive bouyancy because that means ship will start to move up as you lift the piece up with crane.

Good job US Army Corps of Engineers - often underappreciated what they get up to! Plus good on all the polticians etc. for either - Keeping out of the way and letting people getting on with it and B) Making sure those that need help to get things done (I'm sure there were things) got the help. From a non-american it seems people in the US like to abuse the Biden administration but it does seem that the past few years have invovled alot of quiet compentence in the US...

I am interested as to what will happen to the intact containers and their contents and the ship itself once it is recovered? I guess the ship will not be repaired and will be written off, but do the owners get their containers back with the goods, or does insurance simply pay out.
