I do want to point out that, given that the dialog has been recorded for these characters and that the game is in alpha testing, Mary Kirby almost certainly DID write Varric's story for Dreadwolf, and was let go after all the writing for the game was completed.

Varric becoming more of a spy master in the background (like leliana) would be a great way to "retire" his character from adventuring while still keeping him around. Tho him as a party member would still be iconic.

@@trigger0403 Trevor Morris was never an employee at Bioware, so he wasn't "fired." They opted to hire Hans Zimmer's studio instead - the same studio that brought you Baldur's Gate 3's soundtrack, I might add.

You compared him to Duncan and now I'm fearing for his life. I don't want him to die. As for characters to see, I want everyone in. The world will end. I want the inquisitor and their loved one, I want the divine, I want the main memembers of the inquistion. Hell, give me people from DA2. Merrill has to be aware of what's happening, Bela was an inquistion agent who has Leliana's trust, if it's in Tevinter, Fenris will be in the area. I do think, stakes wise, this is an end all game. Everyone should be there.

I think that the scenario where Varric dies would be the most reasonable one. As much as Varric is loved by the fans, I think that Dreadwolf is the best time to say goodbye to him and make place for newer characters that can be as lovable by the fandom as him. I would imagine that Varric dies in a heroic way, perhaps saving our protagonist from being fataly wounded by Solas or one of his minnions, thus giving our MC additional motivation to stop Solas and his plans.

He is one of my favorite characters, i honestly don't know if i would want him as a party member or not it wouldn't make sense, but maybe he will be able to join us on SOME missons just not ones that involve the dread wolf because solas would probably know his every move since he knows varric so well. (It sucks that mary kirby is leaving😭)

I like Varric as a character but somehow I never manage to stick him in my party once I have other companions, I liked DA2 the fact that some missions required locked characters: Varric, Anders for example.

I'm hoping we get a trailer and release date at the game awards, but I'm worried for the game the Dreadwolf arc feels like the Reapers in Mass effect being a world ending/galaxy ending threat well.. 3/4 games did have a world or continent ending boss assuming since solas does want to destroy the veil. How will Bioware top this if it is a world ending event? I'm hoping the next dragon age after DA:D is a prequel like from the first few blights or the elven era.

Varric becoming Viscount of Kirkwall WAS the perfect sendoff for him. I was shocked when his narration was featured in the early Dreadwolf trailer. I liked Varric as much as any other Dragon Age fan, but there are other legacy characters that could play a vital role in his place. I don't get the licensed Dark Horse comics because the artwork is usually subpar for my tastes, but the one that you reference sounds like it usurped the Inquisition cutscene that indicated that the Inquisitor planned to recruit someone unfamiliar to Solas? Accompanying him/her in that scene was Leliana, Harding and Cassandra. Not Varric! Dorian could easily have served as a stealth recruiter or better yet, Maevaris!

I love Varric but I wouldn’t want him to come back as a companion a third time, I think he should have more of a similar role to Leliana/Cullen/Josephine along with Scout Harding, being advisors somewhat. And I’m curious what’ll be his fate, will he be able to survive a third time or will Dreadwolf be the one to do him in? Also, unrelated but, a video I think would be really cool to see (perhaps around the time Dreadwolf releases whenever the hell that would be) is showing off what your canon world state would look like, who your protags are, what decisions they made and how that might affect the game as preparation for it.

They could include Varic as a companion, but do it similar to Tali in ME2. The new hero might run into Varic early on while the suspected big bad is Solas, only to discover that the real big bad is someone else. That would explain the sinister voice at the end of the DA day video. Solar could still be a problem, but if things are going FUBAR, Varic could pop back up as a mid to late-game companion helping to take out the enemy no one suspected.

for me varric is one of those characters like cullen that already way overstayed their welcome just bcos they were popular. i liked him in da2 as this steadfast friend to hawke, but got progressively annoyed by him in dai, as he was getting turned more and more into writers' mouthpiece. and then he was by far the weakest part of the missing, it was really weird for me that the de facto ruler of kirkwall just went off to do something else (but i had the same issue with the alistair comics). all in all, i really wouldn't be against varric dying heroically at the beginning of dad, i really have enough of him and i'm afraid if he won't die, he'd be crammed in the plot anyway, even if it doesn't make sense, instead of more interesting inquisition characters like charter or scout harding. but if he is going to survive i would very much prefer him to give the player some political support - i think having a viscout of kirkwall on our side would be way more meaningful than having just a dwarf with a crossbow. same issue as i have with maevaris or vivienne, their political connections would be way more important than just fighting people.

I sadly tend to feel the same more and more. Like...in the teaser he said "We've got your back. I've got your back. Against demons, etc." and I'm like "Wait...Is this the THIRD time he - for some reason - is one of the closest friends and companions of the protagonist??" In DA2 we got to know him. In Inquisition we AGAIN got to know him (although we got a little bit of back story with Bianca). In Dreadwolf we YET AGAIN get to know him. At some point you're probably screaming "I know you better than yourself at this point" at the screen.

Also, I notice a lot of comments mentioning Varric's death as motivation to go after Solas. Am I the only one hoping for a game path where your MC actually joins Solas?

Killing off Varic at the start, like Duncan would be a horrible idea in my opinion :/ Varric is one of the faces of Dragon Age and is so popular that it would be absurd to do so, but like you said, it is an option (One I hope to never see)

An advisor works for me but as a companion not so much. I think only Varric or one other companion would work as a carry over companion. But there should be no others. I think it needs new companions.

I didn't like Varric in 2, but I liked him a little in Inquisition. Then in Trespasser he usurps Hawke's position of Viscountess, and he sucked in the comics. So I've had my fill of Varric for the rest of Dragon Age. As for Mary Kirby, she likely wrote his parts for DA4 and THEN was let go. So her work toward Varric is baked into the cake already. I think Varric should only play the role of financier for us. The (ex-)Inquisitor should be the one who finds and recruits the new protagonist. Varric should only bankroll us, if anything.
