Terry & Ash, here's my recommendation, for what it's worth...just ignore the subscribers who are questioning your decisions, especially when it comes to design. Unless someone is a structural engineer and can clearly see that you've done something that will be dangerous, just skip by these comments. None of us are there in your chateau with you, so only you can really see what's best. And anyway, it is your chateau, your financial investment, and your hard work that is relevant. Keep doing the great work you're now known for, and Crack On!

I know you're past this point, but for future projects, to drill a hole in the tile without the bit skipping everywhere, drill a hole the of the same same dimension in a piece of wood. Place that wood over the tile and line it up. Then use the wood as a guide to hold the hole saw steady on the tile. Easy peasy.

As an Australian not having a stand alone shower sounds weird to me I have never understood trying to shower in the bath lol. You are doing wonderful work and it is all totally worth all the effort time and money in creating a classic bathroom in keeping with the history of the chateau.

It is very common in old buildings and not st all strange. In Sweden we have always a shower in the bath to shower off the exessoil and stuff from the bath. How do you do that otherwise?

I personally can’t stand having a bath and I don’t think I have had one since I was a child in the UK and that did not have a shower attachment. The one I have in this house I use for the grandkids if needed

As a fellow Aussie I hear what you are saying. Yet My house was built in 1925. When we purchased it in 1976 there was a gas heater and flu over the bath, which heated the shower water which was in the bath and the bath water. The bathroom has been redone twice. both time with a stand a lone shower. Yet have always dept a big deep bath. Nothing better for aches and pains and epson salts or bubbles and a good book. I love Tracy's bathroom in the cottage and Ash and Terry's moody bathroom on the 3rd floor. I can't wait to see this one finished. Love the blue. xox

It boggles the mind how much a shower install costs. We redid ours a while back, and it seems like every little thing you buy is ‘custom or specialty’ so easily costs more than any other room. Looking forward to seeing the completion with your hand painted tiles🥰🤗

The shower is looking lovely. I believe people asked about installing the door first because in the USA, a stand alone shower is installed differently. The Schluter system with their waterproof membrane and pan liner are common products in construction. The tiles are then installed and are continued outside the shower door area. The trim for the glass door is installed On Top of the tiles. The tiles are usually continued outside the shower to prevent water damaging the walls near the shower. We usually have a glass company install the glass shower door. This allows you to have any size door you want. They also add something to the glass to make it easier to clean. I hope that explains the questions.

One other thing that’s different in Australia is the shower door cannot open inwards in case there is an incident in the cubicle and emergency services need to extract someone. Perhaps that doesn’t apply with the concertina (bi-fold) door?

In Canada we do that too because the wall always gets wet just outside the shower, tile it and waterproof it as well. And a shower door that swings out so that you can actually close it when you’re inside if you’re not a skinny person.

I know what you mean about the cost of building a shower; when I bought my house, I had the guest bathroom redone, with a built-in tub removed and replaced with a large shower. There are so many parts to having a shower put in! The different type of wallboard that has to be used behind it and waterproofed, the tiling, the door and door frame, the fixtures, the flooring in the bathroom...I also had a French vanity put into that bathroom because I've always wanted one, and well, why not? That project added about $15,000 onto what I spent to buy my house, but it was so worth it! The guest bathroom is closest to my office in the house, so I use it more frequently than the master bath. And I love it! People forget that this shower is in a guest suite, not somewhere a person would be living with it every day. So it doesn't need to be enormous. Can't wait to see it fully done; it's going to be gorgeous!

I would suggest maybe having a shower in the chateau can fit a wheelchair or a side bench of some sort then if you have a guest with special needs you can accommodate them. Most don't have this, so it would set you apart from other chateau's.

I love the colour of the egg and dart tiles. It appears To match the porcelain beautifully and Vivienne’s tiles will elevate the whole bathroom to a room consistent with a chateau of its time with hand painted works by a craftswoman. Great job. I also loved that despite Terry having done plenty of tiling before, he left it to Ash to learn a new skill and enjoy the pride that comes with that, without micromanaging, but labouring for him cutting the tiles and being physically present as a support. Teaching at its best. Well done to both of you.

As you seemed confused by the shower door argument the main reason to tile behind and beyond the door is to allow a full seal on the frame and to protect the outside wall you are planning to paint. Admittedly this really is for a fully tiled bathroom normally but remember there is a lot of moisture builds up outside the shower door (from condensation etc) and cleaning the outside is easier. Remember your lack of future maintenance approach and that the guests may not be quite as careful as yourselves. In my opinion painted surface touching a shower door will just build up with mould and grime! You have done a splendid job and if it works for you that's all that matters
