Can you possibly speak to the differences in paper? For example, hot press vs cold press, or rough vs. smooth. You would think it would be self explanatory, but it’s not. For a beginner it’s not anyway.

I get this question a lot. I've mentioned it in some episodes but should do a dedicated episode on it. There really isn't a whole lot to tell. In the end there are no rules really. Its down to preference and the feel you like but here are some general characteristics. Hot press is very smooth. It holds out color a little more, which just means color can, depending on brand, be more intense and sit on top more. It dries faster and is not as absorbent as Cold Press. While Hot Press can be used for any kind of painting, its especially good for tight controlled painting calling for a lot of crisp edges. Very wet washes tend to swirl, move and granulate more on the smoother paper. Cold Press has a slight texture to it compared to Hot Press. Its the most commonly used wc paper and preferred by most watercolorists as a good all purpose paper. It soaks up a bit more water and takes longer to dry than Hot Press. The texture distributes water and color more evenly so its easier to get perfectly smooth washes, but because of that same texture, crisp detailed edges are not as easy to achieve Cold Pressed. Rough is just like Cold Press in its characteristics but with a more pronounced texture. Its used more by expressive, loose painters who like to see plenty of rough texture in their brush strokes.

Thanks for sharing your considerable talent and expertise. Your laid back sense of humor makes it fun. I would love to see a couple of episodes on composition and leading the eye through a painting. When I try to plan a lot, my painting gets stiff. If i'm spontaneous, it's not well composed. Help!

You've earned not only this achievement, but I wish you many, many more! When you paint with watercolor, it's amazing the differences between 'papers' and finishes. This is probably the single most important choice we make, when we create our artwork, as the surface really does effect the outcome.

I have major watercolour paper envy! So far, I've only tried Fluid and Arches. Lately, I've bought sheets of Arches and cut it into smaller sizes, as that seems more economical than the pads. Through you and my own experience, I found out that there's a big difference between cheap and artist quality watercolor paper. I agree Steve, with your 'working on the best paper' no matter if simple practice or full-blown finished piece. A big reason for me (not mentioned here) is that I want to be able to rely on how my paper performs. I want to know and understand it intimately, be it quick study or full finished painting. Since each paper performs differently I want to be able to count on how my paint responds every time, so I stick with one brand (Arches.) Sometimes batches of the exact same paper may vary in performance, but sticking with one paper & company makes for a higher percentage of reliability. All that said, if you cannot afford it, any paper is better than no paper. Thanks for all your videos!

Just got into watercolor and your channel is one I have one I ran into. I enjoy seeing your experience with watercolor.(It has given me a nice direction to go as far as paint.
