Arctic weather (10F or -12C and below) is among the hardest weather for Sartorialists. Practically you are looking at Parkas, not wool overcoats. The exception is the company Norwegian Wool which makes fine wool overcoats with an inner lining of down. Secondarily on sweaters and jackets, despite walking to the office in frigid weather, you need to step into your office or restaurant, or social event which is going to be heated at 70F. A heavy sweater and heavy tweed jacket may leave you uncomfortably warm. This is where layered approach with a undershirt, shirt, light merino wool sweater or button up sweater vest or cardigan works wonders as this underlayer can be removed or the sport coat removed in a warm office. The sports jacket can be a "year round type" with all this. Lastly I agree with pants - flannel, Calvary Twill, and maybe with long underwear underneath. Alden, Crockett and Jones, and Allen Edmonds make storm welted, water resistant, lugged, dress shoes and boots for those snowy, mushy, wet days.

Indeed. I think when talking about winter tailoring people often forget that they spend most of the day in a heated environment. And those that don't probably aren't wearing tailoring in the first place. I love tweeds, but they unfortunately get very little use since they're too warm to wear to the office in most cases.

Agreed. As a Canadian, there are many days on deep winter or I give up wool overcoats.... think ugly parka instead. It is tough to look stylish when you're soaked, shivering and slipping on your rear.

Couldn’t disagree more. I’m Swedish and I wear vintage clothing at all times. A vintage wool overcoat is the best thing when it’s cold. Modern clothing is usually to thin so that’s the issue. If it get’s to -10 or lower I’ll just wear my fur line overcoat and it’s all good. Also wool undergarments are great.

@ I guess cold is relative. I have two nice wool coats and wear them down to about 20F or -7 C . Fur is very warm for colder temperature’s but is strongly condemned in the USA . Tomorrow where I live it will be zero (-18 C) and parka it is.

@@TeslaRules1856If you enjoy wearing classic overcoats and rather be wearing them than a parka I would suggest you to get a vintage one from the 30s or 40s. It’s super heavy weight and very warm. Just as warm as any parka I’ve tried.

There is a temperature in which coats go in the closet and full down parkas come out.

That kind of rough wool is my favourite. The fact that it’s a slightly thick and chunky doesn’t mean it’s refined and cool. One of my favourite looks. Highly quality and composed unassuming and cool.

No such thing as bad weather. Only bad clothing :)

i very much prefer to see your head uncovered. it's something i have noticed over the years. however, if the cold weather calls for it, i rather be warm than to look stylish. but both are a win-win. Great video btw!
