Why Does Soda Taste Better When Carbonated vs. Flat? - • Why Does Soda Taste Be...
In this video:
Bubblegum, the ambiguously flavoured, obnoxiously pink candy gum that is the favourite treat of Violet Beauregarde and, seemingly, a shocking amount of stock photo actors was first invented in 1928 by an accountant called Walter Diemer. Despite being asked in dozens of interviews throughout his life, Diemer took the secret of what he was shooting for in the flavour of bubblegum to his grave, and the company that owns the rights to the recipe likewise isn’t talking. But we’ll get to that in a bit. First, the story of how bubblegum became a thing.

The reason why there are conflicting recipes for "bubble gum flavor" is because there are two main types of bubble gum flavors which are very different from one another. One type, the Dubble Bubble bubblegum flavor, is primarily wintergreen based, with cinnamon and so forth mixed in. The other recipe is more of a "tutti frutti" bubblegum flavor, consisting of fruity-tasting compounds which do not occur naturally but which bear some resemblance to a mixture of pineapple, banana, almond, and so forth.
@scaper8
@scaper8 5 жыл бұрын
That's actually really cool! I can't say that I've ever given much thought to different brand's flavors as a kid. Do you have the name of a common brand of the "fruit" version? If Double Bubble is of the wintergreen-mint-cinnamon-vanilla variety, I'd like to get some of that and some of the pineapple-bannan-strawberry-almond version and do a side-by-side test.

@thriftyfreebies
@thriftyfreebies 5 жыл бұрын
I would’ve guessed the answer to be “artificial”. But, it does seem to taste suspiciously close to tutti frutti. And my bubblegum scented hand wash has a hint of liquorice to it, although a whiff of that note always strikes me as peculiar, so either it should be more subtle or perhaps shouldn’t be in there at all 🤷🏼‍♀️

well there is a holy basil/tulsi variety that specifically smells like bubblegum... it's known for smelling like it. There are toothpastes with holy basil/tulsi. Why not also a healthy chewing gum with the holy basil extract or something...

As a child I did think Double-Bubble did have a slightly hot wintergreen-ish flavor, I can see that combination with vanilla and cinnamon being correct. Sort of like the wintergreen in rootbeer. Just a bit of oddness, not wholely identifiable.

1.5 million dollars worth of bubblegum at a penny a pop is 150,000,000 pieces of gum sold in one year (if I did my math correctly). For a new product that's really impressive.

I think double bubble does have cinnamon, it has a nice spice flavour that others don't. That's also why it's my favourite but ANYWAY. Also when I read the title I was like "it's bubblegum flavoured get out of here!" So.... I was right?

You can blow bubbles with natural bubblegum nothing else added you just cook up the white liquid and it turns into a brown sticky thick paste that you can blow bubbles with. I’m wondering what the pink colour and flavour is I heard it was rosewater and something else and I heard it was invented by a child not invented but discovered this story may be how it was first marketed but how it was first discovered I heard it was totally different story

Everyone is so riled up over his pronunciation of Schenectady that no one has pointed out that there's never been a Schenectady street in Philadelphia. Fleer was located at 10th and Somerville and near as I can tell Dubble Bubble was shipped all over the city from there.

I take it that no one else is blown away that Fleer managed to sell $1.5 million dollars of 1 cent bubblegum in the first year of making it? That's 150 million pieces of gum sold in that year! During the Great Depression, where people generally weren't spending money on frivolous things!
