First off, not to be technical, but Bowser joins Mario because he can't kidnap Peach when her voice is replaced with explosives, since it'll destroy his castle. He intends to kidnap peach after her voice is restored. While Bowser doesn't like anyone muscling in on his "thing" of kidnapping Peach, Peach technically wasn't kidnapped... at least, not at the beginning of the story. Regardless of that, though, this is a good analysis, in particular I like how you brought up the game's unique take on Mario staples. Indeed, it was this fun, zany art direction that I think was a key factor for why the game was so popular, along with it just being a fun, solid RPG with a goofy story to go along with it. This is why I think the remake was kind of a step backwords, despite the visuals being improved on a purely technical level; it was more polished, but also more restrained, it looked very dark compared to the bright and colorful original game, and moreover, it did the whole thing where classic Mario characters got reused assets from previous Mario & Luigi games that are just the generic designs you see in all Mario games by this point. It felt like the creative spark was snuffed out of the remake, which I think (along with releasing the Bowser's Inside Story on the 3DS after the Switch's launch) was a contributing factor for why the series and AlphaDream unfortunately went under.

Partly disagree here. What's so great about this game is that the story is so funny. It's a comedy RPG. It's not just the gameplay mechanics.
