What's So Special About Tarot Pierre Madenié 1709?

I've just received my first historical reproduction of a classic Tarot de Marseille deck from Yves Reynaud. It's the Pierre Madenié deck from 1709, made in Dijon, France.

Lovely video and a beautiful deck. In recent times I have been getting more interested in older historical decks from France and Italy. It is also lovely to hear French being bilingual I don't get as much practice in as I would like these days. Studying info on the Tarot de Marseille in French is also helping keep my language skills up to scratch.

The Fool is titled Le Mat in the Tarot of Marseilles, and Il Matto in most Italian language tarot decks. These archaic words mean "the madman" or "the beggar", and may be related to the word for 'checkmate' in relation to the original use of tarot cards for gaming purposes.

Aw, so sweet, Brooke. Nothing too impressive on my part, though.. I was raised bilingual, and english is a language Dutch people are constantly around anyway (music, subtitles on movies instead of synchronizing...)

i think it's so important to free people up to feel able to, indeed, have their own way of reading regardless of the "system" used as the inspiration for the deck(s) used.

J’ai vraiment apprécié cette vidéo et c’était un plaisir de t’entendre en français. Le mât se prononce avec le T comme dans « échec et maT ». Mais sur un bateau on dit un ma[t] sans le t. Ce que tu dois savoir j’en suis sure. C’est génial d’entendre parler du Marseille. Il se perd dans le RWS. J’adorerai voir des vidéos sur l’interprétation moderne du TDM. I love listening to you speak in Dutch or French. Your voice is just very soothing! Do you think there's a difference between Le Mat and Le Fou? They seem to be interchangeable terms in everything I've read, but I'm wondering if there's nuances I'm missing that can influence the interpretation of the card. xx

Haha that's good, Hannah! I think they are the same. "Le Fou" is a word still used today, most of the time used in the sense of "crazy" or "wild", but "Le Mat" is not so common. I still think it's very similar
