If 7 yards is the absolute most common distance for self defence or when the police use a gun i dont understand the use for flight control. The spread of an fist with buckshot at 7 yards must be alot better.
@shovelhead21557 ай бұрын
Flight control is like a fragmenting slug inside 10 yards, especially when using #4 Buckshot. No fliers, which is possible with any buckshot. It is still the devastating terminal performance we expect from buckshot.
@jpoeng6 ай бұрын
Flight control stretches the effective range of #1 or #00 buck to 35-ish yards out of a cylinder or IC bore, so it’s nice outdoors but there’s no point for indoor distances.
@billF23802 ай бұрын
Nothing wrong with hornady at 7 yds. That’s a pretty tight group. Certainly lethal.
@dubltap72164 ай бұрын
Hornady opens up more than Federal because it's moving faster. (Around 300fps faster)More speed, more spread. It depends on what your looking for.
@SixTwoHemi6 ай бұрын
The Hornady was the most impressive (buckshot) spread at that distance through a smooth bore. If availabe just use a modified or full choke and the Super X will work just the same.

If I ever spend 2500+ on a shotgun set up like that, I would try not to fret too much about spending the extra money on premium defensive ammo, which God forbid, I would ever have to use. And would just practice/plink with the cheap stuff (after I fully function test / group the defensive ammo)

@corycarlson87125 ай бұрын
A good rule for buckshot is that you should expect 1" of spread for every yard you move back. 10 yards = a 10 inch group.... 15 yards equals a 15" group. Federal flite control breaks that rule and has special applications because it doesnt spread as much at further distances. cops like fed flite control because they face threats where regular buckshot will not be effective and collateral damage is a huge concern. I have seen test where flite control is grouping well at 50 yards... that just wont happen with regular buckshot in most guns. At home defense distance regular buckshot is excellent... even preferable over flite control because of the greater spread..... might as well use a slug inside your house instead of Fed FC.But if you are using a shotgun as a propert defense gun and may have to take longer shots that fed FC makes alot of sense. Once you get to 40 to 50 yards you are just praying a couple of the pelletts will hit the mark. I patterned my HD shotgun with rem 00 this winter and IIRC i had 3 pelletts on a silloqette sized target at the 50 yard range. None hitting the vitals. Each shotgun will pattern differently, some will like specific loads and hate others... its best to try 4 or 5 out to 35 yards or so and pick the best. Its all about trade offs. Cost, reliability, range, effectiveness etc etc.Select the best round that is applicable to your situation. I.E. dont use buckshot if you expect to be taking 200 yard shots... and dont use slugs if you live in an apppartment building with neighbors on both sides. Common sense stuff.
@ncramz16622 ай бұрын
I mentioned this on another comment but buckshot is still more effective than a slug with very tight groups as the pellets will spread the second they hit someone. You can watch KZbin videos where they test this with ballistics gel. Additionally a wider spread increases the chance you miss pellets and hit someone else. You can be less accurate with flight control and still hit all your pellets. Wider spreads you better hit dead center or pellets are hitting whatever is behind the bad guy.

I didn’t hear you say if the Federal was an 8 pellet or a 9 pellet load. I’ve found the 8 pellet low recoil LE load to group tighter than the 9 pellet load. Adding that 9th pellet seems to open the group up. Best stuff I’ve ever tried. Try the 8 pellet load and let us know how it does in your shotgun. Every shotgun seems to be a little different. Great video sir.

What I'm wondering is how waterfowl loads do vs targets. Not exactly buckshot. But might be good for a forgiving first shot, that does alot of damage. Followed up but buckshot for a well aimed shot. If the target needed more persuasion.
@nickolasthefrog4 ай бұрын
Trap loads are pretty much lethal at indoor distances. They aren’t reliably lethal, but it’s certainly not reliable to consider them forgiving. If that’s what you’re after, you might attach an OC can to the buttstock of your shotgun where the internet weirdos put shell cards.

@nickolasthefrog4 ай бұрын
Brassfetcher has all your answers (aside from the pattern through your gun). If he’d pander to the algorithm and repost old videos, most of the guntube content creators would have nothing to do. #4 reliably meets professional standards at close range ONLY with highest quality plated shot. 000 is the minimum to reliably meet standards passing into a vehicle. #3 or #2 buck are probably ideal but are only available in 20ga. #1 buck would then be the best compromise for 12ga but is mostly found in 3” shells, because hunters sometimes know their stuff. That pretty much leaves “00 buck”, which often measures closer to actual 0 buck, and we come full circle to just getting what’s popular.

There’s pretty good reasons why people like flight control. Buckshot even with a tight group will perform better ballistically compared to a slug. Even if the pellets hit together in one group, they spread out the second they hit fluid or gel (aka people). You still get the benefits of a shotgun with tight spreads. Additionally, wider spreads increase the probability you miss pellets which is dangerous if you have neighbors or kids nearby. With tight spreads, where you point the gun is where the pellets go
@timg76272 ай бұрын
@@prodbyjxff5724 A basic knowledge of terminal ballistics easily explains the answer to your question. a slug weighs about 450grains and single OO buck pellet weighs about 52grains. Which means the buck despite it delivering one ragged hole at close distance will not continue nearly as far beyond the target as a one ounce slug
