Scfm is the measure of air being taken into the pump before it is compressed. Cfm is the measure of air after it is compressed, that is the usable air flow. Ideally you'd want minimum two times the cfm required for your most air intensive tool. And you'd want the largest air tank you can fit in your space and afford. Otherwise you'll burn up the pump from running it constantly and not allowing it to cool down.

Price and SCFM at 90 PSI are the main features I look for. Tank size comes next. Nothing more frustrating than finding out the air compressor one "saved money on" can't keep up with an impact wrench or die grinder or filling a tire on a pickup or large SUV or truck. I'd recommend at least 5 SCFM at 90 as a minimum starting point.

Justin Dow.. Awesome comparison brother.. I have a 220 volt 6hp 60gal Campbell Hausfeld air compressor that I bought from Home Depot in 1994 for $399 and it has been an awesome one. The first few years of having it, it supplied my Speed Shop that I owned with air with multiple air lines and then has been a home air compressor ever since. It has powered everything from paint sprayers, sanders for paint and body work to every automotive air tools possible. The only thing I have ever done to it other than regularly changing the compressor oil is about three years ago I had to replace the pressure switch. It is getting tired so I might have to replace it soon. But then again it has severed me very well 26 years so I think I got my moneys worth from it. LOL

I own and have used both the 4.5 gallon and 15 gallon DeWalt's. The 4.5 gallon "suitcase" style I would say is more suited for construction tools like framing, roofing and flooring nailers. However in a pinch it will run a 1/2 or 3/8 impact. I can usually get all 5 lugs off 1 wheel or break loose some suspension fasteners before it cycles on. More air hungry tools like an air chisel or whizzy wheel not so much, you get a short burst and the tool will use up the air faster than it can fill the tank. I got the 15 gallon upright specifically for my automotive work. I'm a diy guy working on mine and my family's vehicles and its well suited for that level of use. It'll get all 4 wheels off, or some useful air chiseling or die grinding before cycling on. Nice thing on both with the 200 psi tank pressure is getting more usable air in a relatively compact package.

@SUPERVERSIAL HVLP sprayers, like those used in body work are not recommended with this compressor as they require more SCFM then the Central Pneumatic 21 gal. can deliver. thats continuous compression. focus on cfm/price/tank size. in that order
@WoodJammer Жыл бұрын
Horsepower is absolutely irrelevant when it comes to compressors. It boils down to 3 main specifications. CFM + tank size at the best price. First and most important is CFM. Cubic Foot per Minute. Imagine a small tank 1 Ft wide, one Ft long and 1 Ft tall. One cubic ft. If the compressor is rated 4.0 cfm @ 90 lbs means it supplies 4 cubic ft of air at 90 lbs in one minute to any tank size. This is where you compare price per CFM to get the best deal. For example if one compressor labeled 2hp delivers 5.0 cfm@90 psi for $399 yet another compressor on the same isles labeled 1.5hp delivers 5.0 cfm@90 psi for $300 the choice is easy. If you are using a carpenters trim gun or a singe framing gun then all you need is one of the smallest compressors on the shelf like a 2.6cfm@90psi. If your nailing plywood to rafters using a coil gun you need about 8cfm@90. If your using a luge wrench you don't need a lot of cfm. You need a big tank. If you are sandblasting you need a high cfm compressor with a large tank.

Best battery powered compressor?
@happycat041110 ай бұрын
If you don't mind buying used buy a second hand oiled air compressor. Most week-ender DIY people like portability so they can use their air compressor in the back yard as well. With that being said, look for an used air compressor that can put out at least 4.2 ~ 5 CFM @ 90 PSI (this CFM will be enough to run most air tools in the home shop) with a 4 to 6 gallon tank. HP is not so important but find something with at least 2 HP and make sure the air compressor is oiled. Oiled air compressors will last forever with minimal maintenance as oiled units can run 24/7 if necessary due to the oiled air compressor's full time oil lubrication system. Ignore any air compressor's 40 PSI rating as this rating is absolutely useless....
