My favorite "caliber war" statement comes from Col Jeff Cooper: "Carry a .25 if it makes you feel good but don't ever load it. If you load it, you might shoot it. If you shoot it, you might hit somebody. If you hit somebody, *and he finds out about it,* he might be very angry with you." lol

ladamyre: That was probably the funniest stupid statement I've heard about guns. I bought a $50 (new) Raven .25 auto about 25 years ago just for a nightstand gun for my wife. I tested it out by shooting at a pile of wood in my yard. To my surprise, these bullets went through a 2x4 and still had enough left to embed 1/2 inch into the next one. I later found out that at least 90 people in the U.S. alone, died in the scene after being shot in the chest with a .25. I agree that a .45 acp will do more damage, but is that necessary when a .25acp has two 6 round mags? I would love to have met Col Jeff Cooper, just so I could point my Raven at him and see if he laughs or gets scared.

My personal choice, by far, is a 9 mm also. But I always remember my trainer’s advice: the best ammo is the one you can hit your target with. You’re better off with a 22 if you are able to train with it frequently and become extremely accurate with it. There’s no sense in having a 45 or a 357 if you can’t hit the broadside of a barn with it. His point was, choose the caliber you can afford to buy in large quantities, train with it often, and become proficient with it... no sense in buying a tremendous stopping power caliber in name only, never training with it, and then be unable to use it properly in self defense the day you need it.

9mm is effective because you can stack more rounds in the magazine. Most people in a gunfight freeze, fire wildly and miss, and forget to reload or keep pulling the trigger on an empty gun. Bullets that don't hit don't stop attackers, and neither do bullets that are in a magazine that isn't in the gun. Having more bullets in the magazine in your gun improves your odds of hitting something, if you don't freeze and you remember to pull the thing and start shooting.
@TeamTopKick5 жыл бұрын
Sounds good but think this way. You in a life and death situation your plastic fantastic 9mm hold 19 +1. You freakout and mag dump. Threats ended. You break your tunnel vision. Go to make sure your bad guy is totally down and no longer armed. You take a deep breath and glad you lived through the ordeal notice one single fatal shot hit the badguy and then hear someone scream in horror and find out one of those stray bullets hit someone's kid and killed them. Spray and pray ain't the answer and when people say capacity over power is what I see. Bullets keep going and have to hit something. Don't wanna send 20 rounds down the barrel to hit the target once.

I'm sorry, but there would be many people who couldn't handle the recoil. Let's face it, if it were such a popular round, more would be carrying such. More people carry the 9MM because there is less recoil. The cartridge is fine. I find 10MM fans to be much like Glock fans...there is no better cartridge or handgun.

I agree with 100% of every talking point John said. I'm glad he brought up the temporary wound cavity which is how the body stretches when a bullet enters flesh because of the air that it carries based on FPS. John said 2500fps, but 2200 fps and above is the starting threshold where the elasticity of human flesh cannot withstand the expansions of such speeds. Therefore, projectiles traveling at that rate will tear vital organs that it comes close to while slower pistol calibers must hit vital organs dead on to deal critical damage. A typical 9mm round although 124 grain will leave permanent wound cavities approximately the size of the expansion of the hollow point. While a 556 round at less than half the grain size, 55 grain, will shred and destroy flesh. This explains why rifle rounds don't put holes in watermelons but rather they explode when shot. Imagine a jet ski traveling on water and how the waves expand in its trail. A bullet moves through the air the same way. Now when talking about rifle rounds, you have to understand that different rounds for different things. There are hunting rounds and anti-material rounds. 308 Winchester is great for hunting large game. a 50 cal BMG is an anti-material round, its meant for shooting through building walls. When hunting small game, you want to use really small calibers, that way the rabbit doesn't explode and the meat is destroyed. There is no such thing as a sniper rifle, If you snipe people with a rifle, it is now a sniper rifle and you're a murderer. When you think about it, hitting a deer with a scope is just as much sniping as any target whether is stationary or the ambassador. The 223/556 round is ideal for use against humans. Even an AR pistol can fire at 2300 fps out of a 7-inch barrel. If shot out of a typical 16-inch barrel like an MP sport15 or Springfield saint. You're looking at 3000 FPS. with a really sharp 55grain projectile. For all you AK fans out there, an AK will smash up a car much better than any AR can, true, but if you're looking for defense against people? The damage you can do with an AR-15 on human flesh is on the level of a Mortal Kombat Fatality. In regards to pistol rounds, I think one of the best things to consider is your paired rifle. For example, there are advantages to carrying a rifle with a matching sidearm chambered in the same caliber for the sake of ammo sharing. but if we're just talking about shooting bad guys with handguns. I don't see the purpose of revolvers these days outside of reliability. There are a few revolvers that hold 1 or 2 more rounds in 357 than 44. However, those are super expensive and rare. Most revolvers are all 6 shots, and unless you're in Alaska where you don't know if it's gonna be for a human or a bear. There is no reason to carry a dirty harry. As for the reliability argument, I think that in 2019, so many companies have perfected the john browning design that any MP or Sd9, to Glock, vp9, ppq. it's at life dependable reliability. As for research on the lucky gunner, if you look at all calibers from 9mm to 40 cal to 45. and then find the best combination of penetration and expansion. You'll see that there is not much difference these days. Although a 45 is a larger bullet, depending on the brand it does not necessarily penetrate better than a 9mm nor expand better. That being said, I don't see how anyone would shoot a the same pistol better in a larger caliber. You might shoot a Glock 21 better than you can shoot a Ruger security 9. However, that could just be the pistol grip. I highly doubt anyone shoots a 21 better than a 17. And by shoot better I mean not just accuracy but also recovery. It makes no sense a human can recover better from a gun with more recoil than less recoil. With all that Said, these days, there aren't many good reasons why all your pistols shouldn't be in 9MM. Lucky gunrunner has a video on this topic with two experts from federal. They specifically say they can make the ballistic result of a 9mm on par with any 40 cal or 45 acp. So why not pick the softer shooting one with more rounds if the results are negligible? You should also consider the fact that many pistols come in both 9mm or 40cal. The 9mm version although different barrel shares the same slide as well as other parts in the gun. The 9mm will put less wear on the gun than the 40 cal would and come with a thicker barrel.
@matthewbeaver50262 жыл бұрын
The only part of that I would disagree with. 3000fps is obtainable in a 16" barrel only with 5.56. .223. Needs a 20/24" be lucky to be over 2700 in a 16 with 223 pressures Advertised velocity for 223 is almost always taken with a 24 or 26. If one wants their 16" ar capable of penetrating sub level 4 BA stock 5.56!

Paul Harrell has YT page and he extensively tests different size rounds with different manufacture loads. Many yrs ago it was more definitive of what size rounds were better. A .45 was much better than a 9. Now-a-days, the technology of the defensive rounds has come such a long way (as an example) a 9mm performs just as well as a .40 or .45 cal. If you're interested in how your carry round performs, (he uses a life-like construction of clothes, ribs (meat), oranges as lung tissue and more clothes behind) I'd check out his page. Good luck and be safe!

@jeffschultz88176 жыл бұрын
I'd agree I'm leaning to the far end of the conservative side on this one, but I am open to a change based on research and data. Also, $125/yr for carry ammo is not expensive to me - I think most people spend more than that on Starbucks per year. Also, 250 rounds is about a years worth. I buy in bulk to get the price down to about $0.50 p/round. John - My reason for the conservatism is two-fold. 1) I've heard a couple of horror stories about failures to fire that were induced by extreme bullet set back. Because I dry fire ~5 times a week, I am constantly unloading and re-chambering carry rounds. I do my best to rotate the round that gets chambered in a systematic fashion. Am I over thinking/reacting on this one? How many times can a round be chambered before its a no go for a critical incident? What is your protocol for administrative loading and re-loading your carry ammo? 2) I live in the midwest where there is changing seasons. I'm sure this is less of an issue, but I'm hypothesizing that ammunition ages faster when carried close to your sweaty skin in and out of hot/cold and wet/dry environments. Is this gun shop stupidity?
@jeffschultz88176 жыл бұрын
Josh - That is my plan down the road when I can afford it. The G19 is the only gun I own besides my dad's old single shot 20ga which I inherited. I plan to purchase a G43, then an AR, and then a 17or34, and then circle back and get a second G19 and downgrade my current one to a practice gun. That will probably take a year or two to accomplish. A SIRT pistol would be another way to accomplish less wear and tear on my carry gun as well - something I'm considering.
@theimmortal47186 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine how bullet setback would cause an FTF. It might increase chamber pressure, but the primer will still go off no matter how many times its chambered. I just keep a few mags of hollow points and practice with fmj. Both are 124 gr as in and neither I or the gun can tell the difference between the two, though my wallet can.

I think an important component is how much you're willing to shoot it to achieve and maintain a high level of marksmanship. I would say your .380 is better than a snappy harder to conceal 9mm, and with equal real world results!

My EDC is 9mm, but I've grown quite fon of my Glock 32 in 357 sig. Not much different than 9+p+ with commercial ammo but if you load with 90gr you can get velocities in the 1700 ft/sec. Thats 780 EngFt#. That's a game changer. Recoil is .40 s&wish.

I live in a very rural area...but commute 90 mins to a large metro area for work. I also live in a Constitutional Carry state. When I am out and about, in the immediate (very very low crime) area where I live... I generally carry a 1911 in my truck. When I am commuting into the city to work, I often carry a my Walther PPK in .380 caliber.... My 1911 is something I'm very comfortable with, and have trained extensively with. Its also a good varmint stopper. I used to carry a 30-30 as a general purpose truck gun...but have switched to the 1911, and find thats it does just as well in most cases...and is easier to conceal in the truck. My Walther is easy to conceal when in the city...even on hot summer days when I wear lighter clothing. Its a gun I'm willing to carry in a wider variety of places. I heard someone classify the .380 round as the "get away from me!" bullet. And that may be true. But I think in most crime of opportunity encounters that you run into in urban settings... a .380 is enough to end most of those situations. And the .380 can get more lethal, the more you train with it. Learning target acquisition in stressful situations, and putting rounds in anatomically significant spots, can make someone just as dead. If I take my family on a long road trip, I carry my S&W 9mm...its the highest capacity handgun that I own. It offers more firepower, which can equate to cover fire, and buys time for your family members to find cover, potentially. So I think several factors apply when considering caliber. Comfort, accuracy, ease of concealment, training time on a given platform, the environment you live in...even availability and pricing of ammo. I know people who swear by esoteric guns and calibres...but can't afford to properly train with that platform.

I recently started carrying a Glock 42 .380 ACP with Hornady XTP ammo. I can carry the G42 discreetly all day long every day in my setting. Carrying a larger handgun was more difficult and uncomfortable for me, so I frequently did not carry on my person. I figure the G42 is adequate to break contact with a threat in my setting most of the time. It has low recoil and is very accurate. I keep a larger caliber and capacity handgun close by as much as possible.

I’m curious of your thoughts on 10mm. Grip strength is not an issue since I was trained on .45 as a Marine. I have been carrying a Sig P229 elite chambered in .40 as a civilian simply for the added mag capacity. I would love to see a detailed analysis on the pros and cons of the added velocity behind a 10mm round.
@ASPextra2 жыл бұрын
It's not wrong. Against humans it's no more or less effective than any other service caliber, I jokingly call it .40 Magnum. Does the job. Costs a ton. Punishing recoil if you shoot it a lot, no matter if you think you're a beast. Beats up guns because of the chamber pressures. Good if you live in an area with bears and I am not joking.

45acp for two reasons; 1, cuz shooting twice is silly. 2, like John, it's slow, fat and short and does just fine.
@michaelmiller79096 жыл бұрын
Brian Cramer how many firefights have you been in? I'm guessing ZERO since you think one round will do. I guess you never miss and always hit critical mass (head or heart). While you're on KZbin, search for people that keep coming after several gunshot wounds of different calibers. I've seen footage of someone take 14 of your beloved .45 (I like .45 too, but I'm making a point) and keep on coming. Do some research and forget what pappy told you. There's a reason new shooters do better than "hunters, gun nuts" in Marine Corps boot camp. No bad habits to "unlearn" and no bs caliber lore stuck in their head.

My LCP Max is a constant companion. Twenty-one rounds of .380 ACP is assuring enough. That said, it's usually a backup for a 9mm or .38 SPL. I've carried as small as .32 ACP and as large as .44 Magnum. In the end, it's what you can hit with.
