@@JohnstonPettigrew most people on KZbin get money through the service the ads they have interrupting during their video. You don't have to support anyone on youtube the choice is yours. As for doing a channel search you can do that yourself. You can do your own antenna signal survey yourself as well. There are tools online for helping the DIY do these tasks. I live close enough to tv stations so I can just scan and let the antenna find the direction by turning it. Antenna rotaters work great for finding the direction then you can change the direction on the spot for best signal.

The Antenna man is legit, purchased his offer to assist with correct antenna selection, best orientation for reception, correct way to run coax to multiple tv's, splitters etc. Found him to be vigilent with my followup questions, answering to the finest details, not the least bit put off either, very personable / helpful, he rocks! Highly recommend him to anyone who wants to do their own antenna setup and get it right the 1st time, Thank you Tyler...

I followed his advice on which outdoor antenna to buy and it turned out great for me. After a hurricane NBC would not come in anymore and the other broadcast stations, would, every once in a while, have poor quality. I talked to the tech department of NBC and they said their equipment was functioning fine so it must be the antenna. I moved where it was pointing and it slightly improved the signal but still problems. Antenna Man recommended a Winegard preamp, so I bought one. After I hooked it up, the signal on all stations was about 25% better and all my problems were solved. I am pleased with his service. Looks like he knows what he is talking about.

Back in the analog broadcast era, it was easier to get viewable if not great picture and sound using a "good enough" antenna. This was useful in areas where TV broadcast towers are in different directions. You might get some geometric distortion, snow or fading. With digital ATSC-1 broadcasting, antenna selection and placement is far more critical. Less-than-optimum reception is subject to a "digital cliff" effect, with a narrow range of pixillation followed by no signal. Now, in some areas there's also the co-channel interference caused by the FCC signal repack. Thanks so much for your excellent work on the topic of television antennas!

I 100% agree, in analog time, it had ghosts or noise very often, but it was watchable, now with DVB-T/DVB-T2, when you have little worse signal, it just doesn't work at all, there are only 2 states - it works or it doesn't work. I think today digital TV standards still need some development, there should be at least some variable bitrate or resolution, like it is on youtube, when you have worse connection for some time, it just jumps to lower resolution which is better than now picture at all. Digital TV should work like that too, I don't understand why this is not in today DVB-T2 standard, I would say it works even worse than older DVB-T1 which could use 16 MHz modulation and wider frequency range. When we switched to DVB-2 cca 3 years ago, some people completely lost their signal and other problem are one frequency multiplexes with same frequency in half of country, you need very good directional antenna or you are losing signal all the time for like few seconds because of echo and pre-echo. I think DVB-T2 standard is like blu-ray, it's baby borned dead. Many peolpe I know just screw that and switched to IPTV or satelitte or to cable TV. Modern terestrial broadcasting should be spread in same way like mobile data - no giantic antennas. With today unlimited data mobile tarifs, many people have IPTV even in their summer cabin and it works better than terrestrial TV. Also, what I hate about switching to DVB-T2 is that they used new capacity for more nonsense channels instead of better picture quality for standard channels. Here in Czech Republic, we have in full HD only our public TV, commercial TVs screw that, instead of better picture, they added 10 channels where they play 20 years old TV shows like SuperStar, X-Factor and such shits, I want full HD, not watching such shits. OMG, I want full HD, not watch US wife swap or some moron who trains dogs, that's ridiculous. :-D Also, those new channels have so ugly and tasteless graphics, they just copy what was popular in USA like 20 years ago. :-) Only good thing about DVB-T2 is that there will be paid channels in the air, but there is still only one multiplex in testing mode from Prague, that can't be danger for satelitte or cable TV.

I built my own bowtie antenna for less than $5 of parts (copper wire, piece of wood, screws). I gave that one to my parents who live about 30 miles out of town. I then made a bowtie antenna using copper foil and laminating sheets. It's the same dimensions as the antenna with copper wire and wood support, but hides nicely behind the TV. Fortunately, I'm in a strong market area and it works great! Best antenna? The cheapest one that gets you the channels you want. ;)

I don't know if mine is the top of the line indoor antenna but you have recommended this antenna. It is the Clearstream 2Max antenna. I didn't want to fuss with mounting an antenna on the roof and try to run a cable into the house. I use this indoor antenna pointing out my patio window. I also bought an amplifier for a little stronger signal. I get 60 channels in the Chicago area with this antenna. Weather does play a factor in picking up all the channels and if there is allot of wind, raining, or it is snowing, a few weaker channels will drop out. Low signal channels seem to pick up better in cold weather. With all that said, I really like this antenna.

Antenna Man is absolutely correct in his analysis of pros and cons of antennas. I have been educating myself for years about antennas. It kills me to see and hear these advertisers out there claiming this and that and all the bull. I cut the cord 12 years ago. Comcast insisted that I needed them to get local TV and my roof antenna was not "HD." I laughed at the lie. My roof antenna was installed in 1966. Good old fashioned antenna gives me 100 channels and Comcast still tries to bug me to get the local service as they claim it is much superior....all lies. My advice, if you happen to have an old antenna from the old days still on your roof, plug it in. I guarantee you will be wonderfully surprised in what you get for channels and reception (if you are within 30 miles of a city or stations.

I can tell you the best indoor antenna , Will bring you in all the sub channels that the cable company doesn't want you to have does UHF and VHF , that's freestanding and you don't have to move it around in your window .. It's the Phillips with telescoping little antennas , it doesn't come with a signal booster but you can buy one of those separate that you can hook up in the back of your TV to boost the signal up And that Phillips antenna in Canada cost me $17 , says right on the box for Gen 3 TVs , If you have an old plastic flat antenna that comes with a signal booster use that for the Phillips

I actually found a double bow tie antenna that is probably at least 50 years old. It had the two terminals and someone screwed it to an RF adapter. Anyway, I had one of these satellite dish looking antennas from Radio Shack with an amplifier attached to it. What I did was traced the cable wires in my house, took the path that was feeding the comcast internet box and connected the bowtie antenna to the radio shack antenna amplifier. Then put that line from the basement into the input of the RF amplifier that was down there and the other wire coming to one of the outputs that feeds the living room and one bedroom upstairs. I was able to pick up about 58 total off the air channels (10 plus their subchannels). There are stations that I was not supposed to be able to pick up that come in great. The antenna is actually inside a bedroom on top of a rack on the west wall of the house with no windows. We got rid of Cable on Monday and it's now great. Thank you.

You first find out the stations are broadcasting on UHF, Hi VHF or heaven forbid low VHF? If most of the channels are on UHF and Hi VHF your antenna will be smaller and most HOAs cannot stop you from putting up this type of antenna. But if you feel you need PBS and it's low VHF channel broadcast then you will need the large antenna and you will run into HOAs issues. Most UHF and Hi VHF will work with a 4 bay or Gray Hoverman antenna and these can be made yourself and saving yourself bundles of money. The large low VHF antenna is a hard one to make some amateur radio hobbyist can show you how to build these monster antennas.

I still have an older TV that I've been using since the last electrical storm i had in Lawrence county... apparently a lot of people bought TVs that morning because by the time I got to Walmart they didn't have much in stock that was listed in stock just an hour earlier and the clerk said there had been a lot of tv sales that morning. And they did not have any Smart TVs that day. If you live in a rural area they don't deliver that day..or in a lot of cases even the day after that. So I still have that and it's the only thing plugged into an outside antenna. It's also used for the Onn Blu Ray... which for $30 less is far better than the Sony and Phillips i had before. I remember when those two sold products that lasted decades. +I use an A/B switch to quickly disconnect the antenna source.

almost every time I watch the Antenna Mans vids he always makes the statement about there's no such thing as an "HD antenna or digital antenna". He is absolutely correct on this point. digital anything cannot get from point A to point B without an analog frequency. the digital signal cannot move itself it has to have something that can transport it and that is an analog frequency. THAT is what an antenna is designed to receive, the equipment (in this case a TV) on the other end of the antenna is what reads the digital signal delivered by the antenna. It is the same for all digital media including fiber (yes, light is an analog frequency), coax, twisted pair. all are designed to deliver the analog frequency that is carrying the digital signal.

Thanks for your input. As always, it is greatly appreciated. I’m in a vacuum of sorts at Mom’s old house. An 80 ft oak blocks many signals here to the south. East, west and north directions are clear, but few to no stations in those directions.

Speaking as a former ham, I learned long ago that antenna design is really a black art. Your common Yagi antenna type just barely scratches the surface of antenna design possibilities and is the most easily understood antenna type after the dipole. The main rules for antenna deployment is that it be designed for the desired frequency spectrum and that the higher it goes, the better. Hence why satellites cover the planet, Line Of Sight...

I wish you would review the Zapper Box A1 antenna designed for ATSC 3.0 that came out in May 2023. I ordered it a couple days ago because in a previous video you said the maker/designer (televos) had good build quality, but would still be interested in hearing your opinion. I previously bought the Zapper Box ATSC 3.0 tuner you reviewed and it did make a decent improvement in reception. I’m anxious to see how the new antenna works out because I’m using it to replace a 20-year old amplified RCA indoor antenna that requires a lot of manual adjustments to pull in the main stations in my area (42 miles southwest of the transmitters all located together in Raleigh NC). I live in a heavily wooded area with marginal reception and should be able to detect a noticeable improvement in reception if this antenna is actually better than what I’ve been using.

Tyler, I want to commend you on doing your best to convince people an HD antenna does not exist. Probably grandpa's antenna he used to watch his early black and white television will work on today's latest TVs. But of course there are those lying antenna salesman who would lie to their mother to sell her a new antenna. And there are those antennas that are just wore out. But that I a different story. 🇺🇸🎄 Best wishes.

Best antenna for space coast (Cocoa, Fl ) is Winegard sensar IV. Installed out side 4-5ft above roof. I have been installing satellite dish’s since the big dish days. For every big dish we installed a local antenna also. So I have been installing antennas for 35 years. Winegard stoped making the Sensar for homes 6 months ago. So you have to buy there RV replacement instead.(now I install satellites for RV,s by the way).the Sensar replacement is an amplified antenna, so you need a power supply to power it up. I use a Directv PI 21 to do that. Also you have to retrofit it to your pole. My total cost is under $100. There is no other antenna on the market that beats the price and quality of this antenna that’s been around in RVs for 30 years. My towers are about 30 miles away

Actually, "coat hanger antenna" is the best -- IF it will pull in the channels you want. Why? Someone stealthy can follow the plans, and build one for less than $6. That's how I got started, because I'm both poor and cheap. As time went on, I built antennas that improved on "coat hanger antenna," and learned a lot with each step up. I continue to learn, but finally settled on Gray-Hoverman model with VHF amendment. It's a good solution -- not sold on the mass-market.

Also it depends on what channels you are wanting to pick up. Like with me I wanted to be able to pick up nearly every channel possible for my market. At some point I wouldn't mind trying to pick up a 2nd Antenna for the other end of my house to see what channels I can pick up from the west end of the House since I have 2 antennas hooked up to the East end of the house.

Hi it has been a while. The antenna you helped me set up has been working great until they had a big fire on the mountain where the broadcast towers were. So all Air channels went down. 3 main ones anyway. No big deal, but I was trying to trouble shoot the problem by useing my Tyler portable Tv. I got at your suggestion, to see if I could pick up any signals. When I first got the anntena and the Tyler I had good signals on all 3 major channels. Now 2 of the three are back on and will work through the roof antenna to my Tv. But the Tyler now for some reason picks up no signal at all for air TV. I get tons of radio channels, but no air signal. I tried the scan mode, but it just says no signal. So thought I would ask the expert. See if I am doing something wrong. First time I hooked the Tyler up and put the little antenna on it, started picking up channes inside of my house, used it to get a good direction for the big antenna. Anyway. Thanks, Randy in Silver Springs, Nevada....

Our issue is we have two main channels in one direction, then the third is like 180 degrees from that (this one the closest and least obstructions). Not sure what antenna we need. I can get the two no problem, but can not get the third. We've even put this antenna on the roof and turned it in all different directions. They are all less than 50 miles and our antenna has a 70+ mile range. Even bought a indoor outdoor 150 mile antenna it didn't even pick up but one channel.

I don't think you emphasize the advantage of roof-top antennas enough. Even though I'm in a fairly strong signal area I had constant problems with multi-path with a attic antenna. Air ducts, pipes, house wiring, all sorts of things would reflect and distort the signal. Downstairs in the house was even worse. This showed as "ghosts" in the analog days- and as intermittent and signal-dropouts in the digital days. Add to this- walls, shingles, nearly everything the signal passes through attenuates it and many electrical appliances generate interference at TV frequencies. Even a simple antenna mounted above the roof greatly reduces all these problems.

Outside 3 - 6 feet above house. What Tyler’s really talking about is how far you are away from towers. And what you will be satisfied with. If your 10 miles from tower and don’t mind digitizing pic., then inside might be ok for you. But who wants that?

I use a old 3 foot cable cord. Cut the end off one side strip and expose 3 inches of core wire. Attach it to the wall, screw in uncut side to the tv like normal. My mom lives 2 miles from me with one of those outside styles you recommend. We live about 40-45 miles from towers. I know 2 people with outside not sure their exact style. They live 12 miles from towers in city. Guess who gets the most channels 🙋‍♂️. Told them they were missing 6-7 channels I get while over their house. Next visit I brought my cord they laughed at me. Hooked it up over both the houses 12 miles from tower, one picked up the extra 6-7 I get. The other down the road got those plus 2 I don't get. They couldn't believe I and were mad about the money they spent. So my free scrap cable cord worked better than their $150-$200 antennas. So the best antenna in my area is NO ANTENNA!

As an antenna gets large.. most fail to properly take into account the rotor they use.. Mine is way over kill even for my ham antennas But is for 40 sq ft antennas I used to have 4 uhf beams on top..4 vhf beams in middle..and under those a steperir multibrand HF beam Rotors indeed can make a big difference..even though the rotor itself doesnt recieve the signal.. Just another part of the link of an antenna system

A preamp can help with reception if the issue is signal loss in a long coaxial cable but no antenna will magically bring in stations that aren't hitting the antenna in the first place. The most important part of any antenna is the antenna itself. Consider an antenna recommendation from me at the link below. antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html
