1st use a spindown filter to remove sediment. The PH must be corrected. Only then can iron be removed. water softeners come last in the process. Just went through this, with 10ppm of iron

Very interested in this system and understand what you are saying about disinfecting the water lines in the house. I have a water softener that all water in the house comes thru. Is it ok to do this or will it ruin the resin in the water softener.

OneStop CheckShop you can run bleach through your water softener on occasion. I have only seen chlorine break down the media two times. Once because it went through the softener daily from chlorine injection and city water which has chlorine but it does take years to affect it. You’ll be ok for your particular application

Question. Does the water have to be running for the cycle after the backwash to refill withthe tank with air? I ask because my system is connected to a sprinkler system that pumps water from the well to remove iron and if I run the pump for a complete 1:15 minutes I'll burn out my motor quicker. Can I just time the pump to run for the backwash cycle(15 min) and then allow the air gap to refill without water running. I know it's lengthy but I have to give some detail
@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, the water must be running in order for the tank to fill with air. I understand your concern about the motor going out on your pump. Rest assured it will not burn out quicker. They are designed to run for extended periods of time, the water running past the pump motor into the pump and thereby cooling it. The reason I know this is because I also owned a water well company and am very familiar with well pumps. kzbin.info/door/h8gBgQe5SoIFeW-xCkL5MA You will be fine, and your pump will last for years.

Good info. If your well PH is acidic should you place a water softener before the iron filter? Also what do you think of the big blue iron filter cartridge's? Thanks
@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 5 жыл бұрын
Bob Jones it really doesn’t matter about putting the water softener first unless your iron ppm is high. If it is then you’ll foul you media before it collects any hardness. So I would put the iron filter first. You also want to make sure that if using an iron filter that your ph is in the correct range in order for it to work. If your ppm if iron is less than two you may find you don’t need a filter. I have never heard or seen a big blue iron filter. I’m thinking you’ll spend more money than necessary in cartridges or a product that doesn’t work. I hope this helps

I have this iron filter installed right after the pressure tank, followed by a Pelican and I still am having to use a Berkey filter to get decent water. The Berkey candles are covered in light tan sludge and have to be cleaned often. Do you have any advice? Also our water turns everything it touches with a white film on them, glasses, faucets etc, I have photos if there is any way to get them to you.

A couple of things I would do is check the iron level before it goes into the iron filter then check the iron level after it comes out of the iron filter. As far as the white film I suspect your pelican system is not working because it doesn't work or the media is covered in iron and you will know the answer to that question after you test for iron after the iron filter. You may be better served using a water softener rather than the pelican system since a water softener also removes iron as well as calcium and magnesium Let me know what you find please so I can be of more help

@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 6 жыл бұрын
Jeff to be honest I had never heard of the Fleck Iron Pro 2 before so I did a little digging and did not like what I found. Let me start by saying that the guys that developed this product did the research and are using the correct medium in theory but that is when it is used in the hands of professionals and not a DIY person trying to save money and I say this because there are always too many variables that must be considered as you probably know being a plumber. So I looked at the medium and this is what I found; High capacity resin which will remove iron, calcium, magnesium etc just like any other water softener will do. The problem I see with this is that if the user doesn’t increase the salt usage for the brine stage then there will not be enough salt in the brine in order to remove all those contaminants. Each one requires so much brine solution to be removed from the media resin thus creating a problem for the user who doesn’t know this. Secondly it has carbon for H2S (Sulfur) which is a good idea along with KDF55 but the problem with that is going to be that some of the iron in the water will oxidize in the well and still be pumped into the tank and will fill (clog) the micro pores and mezziopores in the carbon thus fouling it quickly. KDF55 is a very heavy media and they are putting 5lbs in the tank in addition to the gravel, softener media and carbon and water so it will be heavy and the end user will need a sufficient enough backflow in order to lift the bed to ensure it will be cleansed well enough. So my thought is to filter the iron out first with an iron filter then soften. The iron filter that is in the video is kind of a representation to this one amzn.to/2CfrsUX but the thing I like about this Filox iron filter is that it can be used with lower Ph levels, 5.0 to 9.0, according to the manufacturer. If the Ph is low and you want to raise it then I suggest a 2 cuft tank with a 1/2 cuft of calcite and 1/2 cuft of corosex in an upflow valve instead of a backwashing valve because every media tank that I have had to change out the media it was like concrete and the customer had to buy a new tank and media whereas in the upflow it is less likely to do that so when it needs to be replaced it can be dumped out and then replaced. I hope this helps. Calcite-amzn.to/2ChM1jt Corosex-amzn.to/2LjJ0Cc

@@adspremiumwepaypremiumfora1469 hey sir I am sorry that you had to go through that, you probably won't get a well report unless you call and tell them if they don't give you one you will report them to TDLR. Texas Dept of Licensing and Regulation, that will get them on the ball. Great info, just ordered an iron (heavy metal filter) , we have a slightly high arsenic level with high iron in our well water and found out that arsenic attaches to the iron and by removing the iron it should also remove the arsenic (hopefully)
@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you have done your homework, in addition to that you may want to install a carbon after the water softener presuming you have one. If not I may suggest one since ion exchange is another way of removing arsenic from water. The ion exchange process is what is done when the softening process takes place. You can call the manufacturer of the resin in the water softener and ask how many pounds of salt will it take to remove the arsenic. If it attaches to iron then you will need enough salt to remove it from the calcium and salt to remove calcium from the media. I personally would have done what you did and would ad a carbon filter after the water softener as the last line of defense and install a reverse osmosis under the sink for clean safe drinking water. Good luck sir, feel free to ask if you happen to have any questions

Maire, I am sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I would get this iron filter and put it in first after the bladder tank; amzn.to/3oQXbCg I would then put in this water softener; amzn.to/2QPGmey You may not like the taste of your water as it may taste salty or sodium like due to your high TDS, so I would recommend a Reverse Osmosis; amzn.to/3wvX8P4 Your pH is perfect, with this set up you will be doing fine. You don't want to get a bigger softener because you already have a high TDS and if you got a larger softener then it would increase your TDS. If you have any other questions please ask.

Hi Thank you for sharing you experiences with us ! I have fairly heavy Manganese 0.731 mgl and a bit of iron 0.188 mgl I have A clack AIO filox filter for about a year now it became fouled with the manganese I'm assuming. I have been struggling with it ! It has been loosing its air pocket after regen! The air pocket appears to get created on the 50 min brine draw how ever when it returns to service the pocket is next to nonexistent what would cause this pocket go away when the valve returns to service mode Getting very frustrated with this valve, I bought Clack because I is a simple design How ever I am beginning to wonder if I made the right choice! I've been searching for info on how this mysterious valve works how ever there is very little out there for info!I have as of today installed all new parts in the valve injector piston kit the only part not replaced was the brine piston as I could not find one! Same problem not sure what the issue is? Any help would be appreciated!

Laura H more than likely the check valve is hung up. If you put your colored into bypass and press and hold the regen button until it goes into regen this will take the pressure off. Then on the input side of the filter you may see something that’s not on the output side. This will be your check valve if not then it is inside. So loosen the large ring on each side closest to the valve, pull the bypass back and you should see your check valve inside the input side of the valve. Meddle nose pliers should get it out, pay attention to how it looked when it came out. Clean it in vinegar or purchase resup and clean it with that if it is fouled. You can also pour your vinegar into your tank and let it set for an hour or so to clean the media if in fact it is fouled. Usually it gets fouled because the drain line is plugged or is not letting the correct amount of water out which could also mean you have a problem with your pressure tank. But one thing at a time. Try and look at the check valve first. Hope this helps

Hi thanx for the quick response ! Yup! I noticed that valve in there while I was replacing the other parts and like a dumbie I didn't remove and inspect it Because I had no spare parts if something broke. As none of the other parts I have replaced has changed the situation its defiantly worth a shot ! That valve Does not show up on any of the parts lists on the internet not a mention any where! I appreciate you helping with your comments, I gather it slides out and is on orings like everything else on the valve? Vinegar will hopefully not harm the orings? AS Trying to get a new valve or orings is slim! I am also injecting h2o2 so I am told that the air pocket is not necessary But in my mind the more is better for oxidizing! The well is a low yield well and is on a timer So This unit is circulating water from a cistern and back to it continuously. I am injecting on the out flow with the mind set that contact time is important .

It can but depends on the casing. If your well casing is not pvc then that may be a reason for all the iron in the water and you run a risk overtime by creating a problem in your well casing and drop pipe since chlorine is caustic however the simple fix is once you pour your bleach use a water hose to thoroughly wash the bleach down the well, my suggestion is to run the water into the well until you smell the bleach coming out of the hose which usually gives you sufficient enough time to rinse/wash the bleach down the walls of the casing and wash it off the drop pipe. I have heard that wells in Colorado are deep and I suspect you don't have pvc casing. How much bleach to use in your well-agwt.org/content/water-well-disinfection-procedure

Many thanks for the quick and really helpful response.@@LowCostWaterSofteners Exactly what I needed to know. Two more questions if you don't mind: 1) Does a Iron filter like to show negatively affect water pressure? 2) Are they truly self-cleaning or do you need to change the media every now and then?
@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 6 жыл бұрын
mcfc68 an iron filter that is too small can affect water pressure. I normally use a 2 cu ft system to ensure good flow about 12 gpm which is usually more than enough. Also note that if your pressure tank isn’t functioning properly then your filter will not backwash correctly and you will not lift and clean the media bed thoroughly and thus have build up and begin to lose pressure. Another note is the drain line. It should be at a minimum of 3/4” in diameter or it will reduce the amount of water leaving the unit and you’ll have the same problem as a bad pressure tank. Yes, all iron filters should be self cleaning meaning they backwashes in their own. The media only needs to be changed when the tank becomes fouled from a bad pressure tank or too small of a discharge line. I normally use filterag plus or filter sorb and never have to go back to exchange media. Some companies will tell you that in order to get more of your money. Now if someone makes the mistake of using carbon as an iron media to get rid of odor you’ll bed will definitely foul and the media will have to be changed, I hope this answered your questions :)

@@jm92gt03gt Hey sorry it took 3 days to get back to you, KZbin didn't notify me. Anyway I looked at the company used to use called charger water and their iron breaker is the same as it has always been with the only exception being they are using a Clack valve like the one in my video and I explained why I used Clack. Clack overall is a better valve than Fleck but you cannot sell Clack valves on or over the internet because of all the phone calls Clack gets from DIYers when there is a problem. That is why I recommend Fleck because they have technical support for DIYers. Fleck is still a very good valve and is what I started with 15 years ago. So if you get a Fleck valve you are still in great hands. Not too mention with the Clack you have to have a special tool to remove the piston, seals and spacers and then you have to remember how many rotations you have to make in order to seat the piston correctly. So it is much more of a hassle than the fleck which all you need are simple tools from your tool box. This will work or ask for a silver 15 which is a larger tank and will cost a little more. Now if I installed it and you had an H2S, sulphur problem only then I would use a catalytic carbon, however, if it is iron I used filter ag plus. Here is the link, amzn.to/3rDJXsO if you have anymore questions please ask.

I’m not sure what you mean by low iron but if it’s not more the 2 ppm use your softener however the best media is filter ag. Carbon is not good for iron as it plugs the media sooner. Filter ag never needs to be changed or replaced

@@jimtum1 what I meant by low iron is less than 2 ppm. I’m looking to replace my catalytic carbon media but it seem that not a lot of people mention filter ag. I wasn’t sure how good it is since it seems to be the lower priced stuff in comparison to other stuff like katolox light and activated carbon.

What is the best media to use? I see Mag ocx, chem-sorb-100, greensand, etc available. Also, one guy says hydrogen peroxide is the best way to remove odor and iron and that air injection can make iron bacteria worse. Help!!
@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 6 жыл бұрын
Dennis Logan I have used either filter sorb or filter ag plus. They both work very well. As far as oxidizer go ozone is the very best, peroxide is also good however the grade of peroxide used can be dangerous and is not the same percentage you get at the store Air works great also as it is free and does not make Iron bacteria worse since the air is what oxidizes it (makes it into a solid) and air exposure kills the bacteria air will also remove the odor. If you have more questions please ask. I hope this helped

@LowCostWaterSofteners
@LowCostWaterSofteners 3 жыл бұрын
The Fleck is a softener and the very same valve can be used for a filter. When you filter out chlorine it goes into the micropores and mezziopores inside the small piece of carbon. I always tell people, when you either smell chlorine or you lose water pressure it is then time to remove the carbon and gravel and replace them both. If this didn’t answer all of your question please ask for more info

Thank you so much for your videos and advice. New water softener is in the works, and now I'm thinking about a filter. I don't have too much iron (somewhere between .5 and 1--softener removes it), but I DO have a sulfur smell (both cold and hot water) and who knows what else in my well water. I tested ph somewhere between 8 and 9. Do you have a filter suggestion? With low iron, would I benefit from an iron filter? Should I just let the softener take care of the iron and get some sort of carbon filter for the sulfur smell? Are there filters that do both? I'm looking for low maintenance, meaning I'll pay the money up front to not have to replace filter cartridges all the time. Any advice?
@jimtum1

Thank you for asking, the Addie is a Iron/Sulphur filter, the way it does it is by oxidizing it with air, thus the little gray octagon thing in the back with the screen on it. If it was heavy when you bought it you'll want to ask what is in it, if it was super light then it is empty and that is okay too, that is how they were originally sold.I would say put the Addie in front of the softener if I knew what was in it. If it is carbon put it after the softener, if it is empty or has filter ag plus, fillox, burm, or some other media then put it before the softener as long as it is a backwashing filter. Never put a carbon in front of a softener as it will get fouled out by contaminants in the water, let the softener remove them unless for instance the iron is too high but yours can be removed with the softener.
