Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed made my early adolescence just that bit better. I even bought the game on Steam about a year ago and went through the pain of unlocking every single unlockable again just so I could play as my beloved Reala against people online (considering the Wii U online servers shut down a for quite some time now). Also, playing MK8 Deluxe online every now and again as well as MKWii during my childhood (the smell of my favourite instant ramen brings me back to those times specifically). Really, kart racers were the only games I ever put in the effort to get at least decent at and will always be my favourite genre of video game ever.

Crash Team Racing and Diddy Kong Racing truly defined what the upper echelons of what a kart racing game can aspire and ultimately achieve. Leagues better than any Mario Kart game and the skill level is higher too. They don’t hold your hand or penalize you too much for taking or making shortcuts or staying in the lead for longer than 1 minute.

If I'm not mistaken just about every other kart racing game once you boost, you don't get like some reserve so even if you add another boost on it it overtakes the older boost and just puts the newer boost in and its place and stops at the newer boost without anything reserved so you basically don't fully maximize both boosts, but what you're explaining in team crash racing is that you actually have your old boost left over to be added to the end of your new boost and I think that's really really cool. Wait I explained that correctly right? If that's so that is really awesome

I would like to nominate Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers as a potential candidate for the top spot. It unfortunately has a higher skill floor than Mario Kart due to the ring mechanic, where you spend a resource of up to 20 on hand at once, to get a temporary speed boost, but get a lot of hitstun from attacks if you get hit with 0 rings (or less as attacks can take away rings up to -20, where you explode and respawn) can be a bit daunting to new players who cant keep up with everything at once. The CPUs have a customizable difficulty level in either more general setting with Relaxed, Intense, Extreme, and Master, or with numerical levels from 1 - 13, allowing players of any level to enjoy the game. Almost all of the achievements in the game can be obtained with Chao Keys as well, which are like the Golden Hammers for Smash Bros. achievement board. You get these by just doing a certain amount of races. There are also cheat codes that can temporarily or permanently unlock everything at once. It's skill ceiling is somewhere in between Mario Kart and CTR. There are numerous abilities for players to tie together for maximum speed (such as wavedashing where you drift for a second after a boost, let go of drift, and keep holding the direction to build up a charge for as long as you hold the direction, then gain a big boost in speed dependend on how long you charged it up for). Additionally, the CPUs in the single player mode (which there is a LOT of, with both the insane track amount, AND a bunch of achievements, with Kirby Air Ride inspired achievment board), are INSANE at the highest difficulty, while still being a relatively fair fight for high skill players (minus the blatant cheating with rubberbanding and better items for the rival CPU but you can counter it by playing well). But these are made up for in it's still simple controls, and an AMAZING roster of 63 characters (9 base 53 unlockable) and OVER 200 TRACKS. BOTH of which get expanded IMMENSLEY when you take mods into account, which are as easy to instal as dropping a file into a pre-existing mod folder, then using the in game addon feature to just select which mods you want to use. The music is great too, although a vast majority of it is taken from pre-existing games, though the original songs that are in the game are just as good. Alternatively, you could say the same about the game's predecesor: SRB2Kart. everything said above still applies, minus the roster and track size, and the more advanced mechanics like the rings, leaving a more simple kart racer that more people can easily jump into. While that game's base roster and track amount is very low, there are HUNDREDS of character and track mods EACH that already exist for the game that can be installed just as easily. IMO i'd give Dr Robotnik's Ring Racers a win in the best track variety category and a contending spot for best soundtrack (unless you dock points for most of it being ripped from other games)

13:36 based on what you've described about crash team racing it looks like a really fun game. What you described about the boost is really awesome. I've never heard of that in any other racing games so that's really cool. I might decide to get that game on switch but it's kind of hard to be motivated to play it if I know nobody's going to play it online. I mean are you actually playing on a worldwide server and it's still nobody or is it like a regional thing or something? I worry that if I just try to play online I'll go against the only people who play the game online and get my ass kicked because I never played the game before but they've played it a ton because they're the only ones who play it

I completely agree with your opinions on CTR Nitro Fueled. I bought it around launch even though I never played the original CTR. I lost the first few races in the campaign and was getting my ass kicked by normal difficulty cpu. After not playing the game for a week I picked it back up and got hooked. The skill ceiling is probably 85% of the reason I kept playing. Other than that I loved the free updates with more customization, tracks, and the added difficulties to time trials. I even grinded for the platinum relics and Velo time trials. (I didn't do the dev times though) I consistently played the game for around 2 years and still go back to it sometimes. It's definitely one of my all time favorites.

11:59 Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed I think it's the greatest racing game of all time. And I don't base my opinion on the tracks although I do like the tracks, but it's because well I like the controls that's one reason, but I also like that it is more skill-based than Mario kart. The items you use are more skill-based. The green shells and Mario Kart are super slow. You need the red shells because if you use the green shells it's not easy to hit anybody unless you really close to them. The bananas are small and really easy to dodge. The blue shell is too damn frustrating. In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed the items that you shoot in a straight line go zipping down the track really quickly which means it's more skill-based. Make sure you're facing straight at the racers in front of you and you will hit them with your shot for sure. With the green shell you're probably not going to unless they're really close to you. It is possible to dodge the heat-seeking RC car in Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed with a boost. The blowfish takes up a lot more space than the banana so it's harder to dodge, not to mention instead of lobbing it forward in the air, you shoot it forward so it's easier to hit targets in front of you. But the best thing is that there is none of that cheap BS with an item that is guaranteed to hit the driver who is in first. They did fix that in Mario Kart 8 sort of with the horn, but Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed you send a swarm of hornets and they're big and hard to dodge but it's actually possible to dodge them which makes it more skill-based. And sometimes they'll hit the first three drivers instead of just the first one. But of course the best part is the fact that you can transform your vehicle which can cause some laps in the track to be different than the last which is really cool.

I honestly grew up with mariokart 8 deluxe and it WAS MY CHILDHOOD. I remember playing the game with my family, the banger soundtracks and just fun level design. My love for it only grew more when they added edits to get rid of certain items (f*** you lightning) to welcome a larger variety of skill levels. So while I disagree with you opinion, I’d still say Crash team racers sounds fun and I’d like to play it someday

Wheres Diddy Kong Racing! That game was so much better than Mario Kart 64. That game actually required a certain level of skill to get good at the game, and learning the different mechanics, like earning a much bigger boost from the zippers by letting go of Accelerate, before driving over them, and using the brake button to turn more sharply for those tricky tight bends. Then you got the hovercraft and plane vehicles to get to grips with. The game has an awesome soundtrack and great characters, but the lack of diverse tracks is apparent. It's like having 4 snow tracks and 4 beach themed tracks, etc. We dont talk about the DS version. They removed Conker and Banjo, soundtracks got mixed up or even removed (Pirate Lagoon), and the racing was slowed down to a snails pace! Plus, the start boosts require a stylus, on the touch screen for start boosts or blowing into the DS' MIC hole for the hovercraft. Eurgh! Stick to the otiginal N64 version!

Totally agree for CTR, will still be my favorite game of all time. There is also a chance for me to call out another kart racer that is really fun to play, Cars 3, its actually really solid to play. Most im sure might say "oh caddicarus said about that" but genuinely speaking withiut his word on it, i say you should pick it up. It will feel similar to the Sonic racing games in terms of drifitng but boosting is different and can even pull off 2 wheel driving, backwards, and even sideways shunts with the right stick

There's already more than 700 user made mods including tracks, characters, vehicles and wheels that can all experienced online! Don't sleep on this game.

the drifting in CTRNF is way too confusing for me, I'll stick with MK8D also I feel like the follow 2 should have gotten a mention for mechanics -Team Sonic Racing (both this and CTR has Team in the name, but TSR actually uses that as a mechanic) -the racing mode found in Skylanders SuperChargers & Imaginators (it's a kart racer, with weapons and jumping)

Although Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is very hard to top for the next Mario Kart game because of the booster course pass, it has been over 10 years since the original Mario Kart 8 was released, so Nintendo has had an insane amount of time to make this game. I see two most likely types of games this game is going to be. Either Nintendo has a crazy new gimmick that is going to change kart racing games forever. Or basically a Nintendo kart, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had multiple tracks that are based on different game franchises and they are all some of the best in the series, if they make entire games about tracks and characters from other Nintendo franchises then the track design can be on another level. Here are two ideas I have for a nintendo kart, instead of a normal rainbow road you can make a rainbow road above kirby's planet popstar and other kirby planets, and instead of bowser's castle you can make ganon's castle, those are just simple ideas, Nintendo can probably do a lot more with a nintendo kart

I think CTR: Nitro Fueled's Blue Flame Boost was the most busted thing ever to happen to that game and wish it was never introduced because it made for way too many runaway wins in multiplayer, not even the Warp Orb, which is supposed to be a Great Equalizer like Mario Kart's Blue Shell, can do anything against a Drift Spammer with a Blue Flame Boost Or at the very least it should have been better balanced, maybe to have Hard time limit that cannot be extended by drift boosting because that damn thing is so unbalanced For the record i'm all for skilled players earning their win & everything, but NOT WHEN THEY'RE ALREADY HALFWAY THROUGH LAP 2 WHEN THE REST OF THE PACK IS STILL ON LAP 1 Now if I was considering just the single player, and/ or the local split-screen multiplayer then I wouldn't care because neither I nor anyone I play with is good enough to pull all that off, but when you throw the online multiplayer into the mix, then that's when it shows how unbalanced the blue flame boost is in combination with Nitro-Fueled's drift mechanics, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the the multiplayer scene died because people were so sick of being left in the dust by that goddamn blue flame

Speedstorm has the best handling and using right stick to side bash is great. But the tracks feel pretty linear. Mario Kart feels stale now. Hope MK9 brings something fresh cause i still vote Double Dash as best.
