What's the Best Position to Sleep in? Do we even need a Pillow?

What I've Learned

4 жыл бұрын

Is sleeping position that important? Would we be better off without a pillow? The science addressing these questions is lacking, but we can still make some conclusions based on the research.

*CORRECTION: It’s no longer accurate to say the brain *doesn’t* have a lymphatic system… [Nature article from 1 day ago - go.nature.com/2SE2pkL] The central nervous system (CNS) was long thought to lack lymphatic drainage; fluid and macromolecules were instead thought to be cleared from the CNS by other routes, such as through absorption into the bloodstream, or through channels running along the outside of blood vessels or nerves to reach the lymphatic system outside the CNS.
As for the sleep experiment, I'm thinking of doing:
Week 1 - Sleep on my bed with a pillow. I will try to fall asleep on my side and will try not to use the pillow to lay on my back.
Week 2 - On bed, no pillow.
Week 3 - On floor with padding. Whether I make the pillow available or not will depend on on the results from Week 1 and 2.
*I'll aim for at least 5 days of data per week to have some leeway for if I go out and the results are skewed by alcohol or what have you.
▪︎For tracking:
Subjective quality: Notebook
Sleep quality data: Garmin vivosmart
Snoring: Snorelab App
Sleep position: Baby monitor camera thing? Any suggestions anyone?

Probably not. Most people breath really shallow. Like breath in normally, then see how much more you can get. Remember to use the top half and the stomach section when breathing in. Maybe do a before and after pushing air through a straw. (Basically to try an keep the output consistent) See how much longer you can breath out. It will probably be a lot of extra lung space that you just don’t use.

The body does what the mind commands but the mind was provide for the body so they both can live. We allow interdimensional hosts - demons - into our homes when we amplify our communication through the ethereal without caution. Psychedlics can do this too. Terena Rosa same. I ditched the pillow about 2 years ago when noticed i was waking up with stiffed neck and back. I only sleep on my back because i have this weird feeling that my internal organs are not properly supported and would move around and out of place if i sleep on my side lol. But on my back i feel like they are in their natural position. The one thing I’ve noticed since sleeping on my back without a pillow is that i go to sleep faster and wake up earlier.

Well laying on your back with a pillow would elevate your head, and give you a "nerd neck". Though laying on your side with a pillow would elevate it to you normal head position or close, without it your head would lay on level with your shoulder, which we dont like.
@douglasjgallup
@douglasjgallup 2 жыл бұрын
I've been working with patients for years and the easiest answer to sleeping on your side is to utilize a supportive body pillow. This actually accomplishes many things. By having your top leg atop the pillow, you're keeping your hips in a more neutral position which can decrease pressure and pain in that region. Similarly, by having your upper arm on the pillow, you're allowing your entire shoulder -- particularly your scapula -- to rest in a more useful position. Whether you use a pillow under your head or not is relatively unimportant. After a short period of sleeping with a body pillow, you'll find that you carry it with you even if you flip from left to right side throughout the night.

yep guys, because actually the pillows are giving an unnecessary lift to your neck, hence the posture from back spinal to your head isn't aligned well correctly as a natural spinal posture. if your shoulder hurts or upper arm strained, try to just cover your head on the side with only your palm, therefore your upper arm doesn't need to go slightly bend upward that resulted in stiffness or strain.

Years ago I noticed that sleeping on my back caused me to snore because it would always wake me up. I naturally adopted the lateral position. Something I learned along the way is the passages of the nose. When sleeping on either lateral side the side of the nose closest the ground closes and the other opens making it easier to breath on that side. When I'm on my back both passages of my nose are obstructed forcing me to breathe out of my mouth and snore.

The Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to sleep on his right side, putting his right hand on his right cheek, and this is what the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recommended others to do. According to a saheeh hadeeth narrated from al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib, the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When you go to bed, do wudoo’ as if for prayer, then lie down on your right side…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Wudoo’, 239). The Sunnah is to put one’s right hand under one’s cheek. It was narrated that Hudhayfah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, “When the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went to bed at night, he would put his hand under his cheek, then say, ‘Allaahumma bismika amootu wa ahyaa (O Allaah, in Your name I die and I live).’ Then when he woke up he would say, ‘Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi ahyaanaa ba’da ma amaatanaa wa ilayhi al-nushoor (Praise be to Allaah who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6314). Ibn Hajar said: The right side is singled out for a number of reasons, such as: this lets a person wake up more quickly; it also allows the heart to lean towards the right hand side. Ibn al-Jawzi said: the doctors have stated that this position is more beneficial to the body. They said to start by lying on the right for a while, then turn over to the left, because the former aids peristalsis and sleeping on one’s left side facilitates digestion. Al-Nawawi said: this hadeeth mentions three acts that are Sunnah, the first of which is doing wudoo’ before going to sleep. If one already has wudoo’, there is no need to repeat it, because the aim is to go to sleep in a state of tahaarah (purity). The second is to sleep on one’s right side… This indicates that sleeping on one’s right side is Sunnah, and if a person does that to follow the example of the Prophet SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he will be rewarded for that. Sleeping on one’s left side is permitted, but one misses out on the reward for following the Sunnah. And Allaah knows best.

In order of best to worse it would be: 1.Side, 2. Stomach, 3.Back. So the back is the worst sleeping position. With the stomach sleeping position, you need to use your arms or a pillow to support your neck else you will get neck pain. Additional notes to consider: (1) Supine sleep leaves our chest and vital organs more exposed than any other position, (2) side sleep better approximates the fetal position by allowing the sleeper to curl up, which (a) preserves heat, (b) protects organs, and (c) mimics our primordial state of satiety and sleep in vitro.

About a year ago, I started renting an apartment again, and I've been stretched out on my back, and I've been having sleep issues since, which have led to occasional migraines.

I noticed that the most comfortable position for me to "start" sleeping is on my left, face towards the wall. On the other hand, the typical reading in bed in the evening is more comfortable on my right. So I can actually just switch by rolling around to switch form one to the other.That works pretty well. Sleeping on the side is also surprisingly comfortable even on harder surfaces, like when out camping or on the ground.

I use the app Sleep Recorder. I've had septoplasty, bought a made-for-me mouth guard that cost me almost $1000 to move my jaw forward, and use a BreathRight strip and still have some nights where I snore some, but not really nearly as much as I used to. Now I want to record myself with an infrared video camera to see *when* I snore and if it's related to my sleeping position.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the softness/hardness of beds, because the last study you cited has that as the main point of why sleeping on your side is good, as a kind of natural spinal massage of the tissue between your vertebrae as the natural breathing pattern of the body is met with a firm surface like the ground to press against. This action is essentially cushioned away with most modern mattresses. I was especially surprised because this is generally more instinctively understood in the way that the Japanese often set up their beds on the floor on tatami. Anyways, love your videos and this one was great too! Just would've loved for you to address this aspect of the paper.

@bexpainter4401 4 жыл бұрын
@@joewger what about if you have large hips? If I sleep (on my side) on a hard surface I have to flip back and forth as my hips get sore and cause my spine to bend more than when my hips sink into the mattress slightly. @tomtrask_YT 4 жыл бұрын
@@joewger Yeah, the PT I saw when I got a rotator cuff injury told me exactly the opposite. If your profile is flat, sure, go for the hard mattress, otherwise, use the one that lets the protruding parts sink further so you can keep your spine in the one left-right plane

I have a heavier top and wider bottom, and I sleep best on the carpet (I know it’s weird, I do also have an extremely firm traditional spring mattress). The way I do this is by sleeping on my side, but slightly rotated forward. My shoulders/hips aren’t stacked perpendicular to the floor. I do use pillows, though I’ve been told they’re unusual? They’re both about the size and shape of a paperback, and only slightly softer lol one for my head and one for my knees. I don’t snore and I get great sleep unless I’m in a hotel. On the other hand, my petite mom sleeps flat on her back, in an oversized-down-pillow-of-a-mattress, with the flattest pillow ever, and doesn’t move at all. It’s creepy. We’d think she was dead if the tiny woman wasn’t *snoring like a bear*. Wtf.

I have always slept on my back my whole life. Over the last few years did a few Survival challenges on Discovery Channel called Naked & Afraid in which I had to live in the wilderness with nothing but a few tools, meaning no pillow or blankets and sleeping on the ground with just a few grasses underneath for bedding. This changed my sleeping posture and during these challenges I always slept on my side. Before I was never able to fall asleep on my side but when I was living in the wilderness I had to sleep on my side or I could not fall asleep. I also found that sleeping on my side conserved body heat much better. When I went back to my civilized world I went back to sleeping on my back because I had my pillow and a manufactured mattress. Doing the survival challenges taught me that our ancestors probably slept on our sides. After watching this video I am going to work towards side sleeping as it seems that is optimal for longevity and brain health. Great video, thank you for the information!
