I just wanted to say thank you for your videos . I discovered gardening during the first lockdown and not only did it help get me through that but actually converted me to growing some of the vegetables that we use the most . I’ve not got a huge garden so bought 2 x 2 metre troughs and I’m planning this year properly . As well as my orangery that kept my tomato plants in - that grew to 12 ft tall and kept me in cherry tomatoes all year . You and your family have inspired me so much since I found you a month ago , I am learning so much and for that I thank you . Keep up the good work .

@@MyFamilyGarden oh my goodness you replied , Yayy lol. I’ve subscribed and am working my way through your videos . This year I will definitely be doing potatoes again , I chitted some myself obviously for the first time last year from shop bought ones and they were lovely . I’d like to do onions - mine didn’t grow last year , garlic , carrots, beetroot . I was successful with lettuce and radish last year . But boy my cauliflowers broke my heart when even after I bought mesh to cover them the caterpillars got them . Going to try again with thicker mesh ! . Oh and I’m going to have a go at ginger and turmeric and keep my fingers crossed . It’s just lovely to watch things grow and even better to eat them . Right I’m boring myself now so you must be asleep . Keep up the good work #digitout .

I have a Garland that I recommend, they seem pretty solid and I even get away with using it outside in a coldframe (instructions say not to... I just make sure to keep it dry). I have a cheaper reptile heating mat I use in the greenhouse too, I just have it under a tea tray. It's -12 up here right now so I haven't got anything started yet, I'll use these towards the end of February to get thing started though and they do seem to work even in very cold conditions Nice to see you post again! take care.

I looked at the garland 7, looks like a solid piece of kit, but it was out of my budget. -12c sounds pretty crazy. It was -4 this morning. All of these are in my house my chillies were started last moth didn't expect this sudden cold

@@MyFamilyGarden Oh aye the 7 is the big one, I have the one with three - it was a gift, it has held up well outside in the coldframe though. I was wondering if winter would properly arrive this year and apparently it did, your mat should take care of them though.

I have a Garland windowsill heated propagator. It isn't thermostatically controlled, but I think the rule of thumb the manual gave was it would achieve a temperature about 8°C above ambient. it seems to work well to get chillis to germinate, but I need to be careful if there is a sunny day.

From several years experience, I have found the clear covers discolour or crack long before the heating element gives out. At that point, you try to find a new lid for your sealed-unit propagator and find the model no longer exists and nothing else quite fits, so you end up using it like a mat anyway, putting smaller trays with their own lids in/on it. When my propagator base gives out, I will be replacing it with a heat mat.
@MyFamilyGarden3 жыл бұрын
Some good points there, I agree the heat mat is much more versatile
@NicksAllotmentDiary3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate. That’s a great review of the two types of propagator. I like the thermostatic control that means the soil doesn’t get too hot. The biggest challenge I have is maintaining light levels at this time of year. Take care. Nick

I bought a Sunblaster 18 inch T45 grow light strip to rest on top of my heated propagator and it seems to be working really well. I can also suspend this later in my greenhouse over established plants. It cost £6.50 from a hydroponics supplier on eBay.
@starlight18673 жыл бұрын
That should say £26.50 !

Good vid Monty! I've been wondering about these gadgets. My germinating window seems to be a pretty constant 20 degrees and most of my seeds come up easily. So I wondered what the point of propagators is. Is it a matter of allowing you to turn your room heating down while keeping your plants warm? The main trouble I have tends to come at the micro stage around 2 - 3 weeks after sprouting. A lot of shoots fall over and dry out at this point, so I'm experimenting between manual watering with a spray can, and base moisture with a cover to create humidity.
@MyFamilyGarden3 жыл бұрын
If you're managing to keep that sort of temperature you have no need for these. Our heating is never on at night so the temperature can drop so this helps in in that situation. I take them off the heat once the seedling come up and just leave them on the windowsill and my chillies go under my lights
@ashiola3 жыл бұрын
Good to know! That means I definitely need to work on my watering (or else, lighting) of young seedlings then!

Take care.

I think they need to be involved from a young age so they can grow up feeling this is part of a normal way of life. Up until this year my radiator, boiler, fridge has been my heated propagator, the only advantage I'd say is the ability to control an even soil temperature
