Power2max type-s user here, some quick thoughts. -The distribution is brutal, took forever to get to ship out. -Battery swap isn't as bad as people make it out to be. My bottom bracket area isn't huge, so I don't need to take off my crankset. Even if I do, it's essentially just two allen bolt to remove (3D 24) -Because the 3d 24 crank arm only need two bolt to remove, swapping is actually VERY easy between bikes. Only issue of course is swapping between different kind of bike (road bike to say... gravel bike, where you may want a different gearing). -Auto calibration. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. It makes your life a million times easier. If you're anything like me, you just want to go outside, hop on, and do your thing instead of standing there for 5min setting different things up on your phone and garmin, then just go get a Power2Max. Recently went out with a friend, and he needed to stop mid ride to calibrate his power meter because it was "off"... it really made me realized how bless I am to have auto calibration. His meter was telling him he was in Z1 when we were hitting more like Z3. So much for training. -Power data is very consistent. I have used it in the cold, warm, hot, rain, sunny, long distance, short distance, race, training, casual ride, sprint, turtle speed, everything. It simply works and consistent. -I personally opted for the Type-S instead of their newest rechargeable one because lithium ion battery has its issues as we all know it. One of the main concern for me is of course recharge life. The more times you charge a lithium ion battery, the less capacity it will eventually have (think laptops). I also prefer to be able to just carry a spare battery with me if I'm on a trip in a different country... or maybe even be able to buy a battery there and swap it in seconds. Yes, it is a somewhat specific battery, but I was able to find them in Radio Shacks in the US. Hope that helps, cheers!

+1 for Quarq as a company. I don't own the Elsa, but I did have an older S975 power meter that had an issue with moisture ingress when riding in the pouring rain that caused the power numbers to drop off. I had the power meter for about 3 years before this problem started. Contacted Quarq, and they quickly warranted replaced it with a new Riken, plus a load of free water bottles and stuff. From a customer service standpoint, you can't go wrong. And I'm still happy with the Riken; newer firmware updates eliminates the need for magnets to detect cadence.
@plain-bagel8 жыл бұрын
On the Power2Max, you only have to remove the crank to change the battery if your bike has an overbuilt bottom bracket area. This is the case, for example, for my 2015 Tarmac SL. When I had the Power2Max mounted on my Tarmac SL2, however, I was able to access the battery compartment wth the cranks still installed. So, whether you have to remove the crank to change the battery depends on how large of a bottom bracket your frame has.
@dannycarr2k8 жыл бұрын
Very true. My Cervélo P3 needs the crank removing, my Cannondale CAAD10 doesn't. I'd also question the comment in the video on the Praxis Works rings. They are universally well reviewed for being on par with Shimano. I know Shimano sets the bar high, but I've found the Praxis to be excellent.

I have a set of the PowerTap P1 pedals and have not had any of the issues that you mention in the video. You are correct, they were very easy to install and thus far, no issues with spikes in power. My one issue is that firmware update. This can be a bit of a pain. I've updated the firmware in one pedal, but for some reason the software won't update in the other pedal. I need to do some research on how to solve this problem.
@jamiewilkinsracing8 жыл бұрын
+Jim Pait When doing the update via your iPhone (annoyingly that's the only device compatible with the app) you can select which pedal the app talks to. Make sure you wake them both and have them paired to your phone. We had the same problem to start with as the app isn't very intuitive and it isn't clear that you have to update them individually. Good that yours are working well.

Only stating my opinion.

Very good round up. So overall takeaways: 1) pedal systems not quite there but perhaps next iterations will mature 2) crank systems are most reliable but can be cumbersome to maintain and/or swap between bikes 3) Stages, Rotor (or perhaps 4iiii) is a suitable platform for a new, multi-bike PM customer??
@jamiewilkinsracing8 жыл бұрын
+Michael McConnell Yep! Your circumstances and bike collection will influence your choice. If you have several bikes with different BBs, then the transferability of the Garmin Vector 2 will outweigh its imperfect performance.

Great review. I’ve owned PT G3 hub, stages, PTP1 pedals and the Garmin pedals. The only one that has been completely reliable has been the G3 hub. I’ve had to return one Gen 2 stages, a set of P1 pedals and now my Garmin Vector 3’s need to go back for a new set as the right pedal no longer calibrates. Save your sanity (and a ton of hassle) and buy a cheap PT G3 training wheel and a decent race wheel laced with a G3 hub. I have 50k on the PT G3 and it’s been absolutely perfect.

I started out using the Stages power meter along with a Garmin 520 bike computer and that combination worked well, however when I upgraded to the Garmin 820 it would drop data for RPM and Power numbers. Tech support from both Garmin and Stages was unable to resolve this, and I know that other cyclists with the Garmin 820 and Stages Cycling combination report similar data drops. I sold my Stages and upgraded to the Quarq power meter, which works flawlessly with either Garmin 520 or 820 bike computers.
@leofonte5 жыл бұрын
I had the same issues with my stage. I bought a Quarq and it is just Perfect! Apparently Stages emitter is very weak, I mean the quality/power of the signal is very poor. The reception of the new Garmin series (520/820) is also weaker than the previous generation (510/810) so most of the new Garmins has this kind of drop data issues with Stages power meters. I was able to solve the problem installing the Garmin on the the top of the stem instead of in front of the handle bars. However I would say that Quarq, is much better than Stages. I would never buy or recommend a Stages again.

I'd be *very* interested to see if the April P1 firmware update fixed the over reading you saw during an FTP test? 30.026 (Current), released April 21, 2016 When Autozero is set to off, the Installation Angle is no longer continuously calculated. This fixes the issue where power was inconsistent on very long climbs.

Thanks for the useful article/video! One piece of information that I'd like to see included is Bluetooth connectivity. I am thinking about getting a Powermeter but am not using Garmin and ANT+. Instead I am recording ride data with various smartphones and Wahoo RFLKT/Sigma Smart computers. Those work great (especially the RFLKT) but Bluetooth is a much more convenient protocol to use with smartphones. I know that Stages comes with Bluetooth which had it top my short list so far, but I guess I should find out of Quarq does the same :)

What about bePRO? They have the same design as the PowerTap P1 and have excellent reviews. Also worth mentioning that Stages seem to be working on a dual crank power meter as spotted on Team Sky's bikes.
@paulmckenna94778 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to mention that I have been using the P1 pedals for about 9 months now. I don't agree that the pedals are still "in development". There have been several firmware updates that have solved all issues I have had with the pedals. Power readings are very consistent between sessions. Using real time comparisons between a G3, P1 pedals and a Computrainer, I have not observed the drift noted in the review starting at higher wattage. I think most of the criticisms have been addressed with firmware updates. Also updates to the Garmin app have also corrected some of the zero calibration and firmware installation issues noted elsewhere. I would highly recommend the pedals if portability is a priority for you. On the downside the pedals are heavy and their use of a special cleat which is not fully Keo compatible is disappointing. The pedals can be hard to clip into because of cleat design and how the pedals sometimes hang in a less than ideal position. For reference I have 4 years experience with 3 different Power Tap hubs and about 2 years of using a Computrainer. IMO trying to compare data between devices is a fools task. There are simply too many confounding factors. I tried many experiments and the deeper I got into it the more complicated it became. Head units, where power is measured, auto-zero, environmental conditions, etc all influence the data. Pick a device and stick with it. If you change devices you need to start a new dataset.

I went for the Favero Electronics BePro powermeter. it cost €500/£347 for single sided. It's pedal based like the powertap p1. Slightly harder to install but still doesn't take long. It's also nowhere near as chunky as the P1s. It deals with temperature changes well. My only gripe is the battery life isn't long enough but for €500 it's such a bargain I've been very happy with mine

Good review! Its interesting that many of the bugs in LIMITs have been experienced by other PM's. LIMITS for me has been great indoors (relative to the price anyway) where temps are near constant but if it has problems outdoors with temp changes outdoors I may be looking for a new PM. Vectors 2s is my favourite just now due to its versatility and its ability to be upgraded to spd-sl but after watching the video Vector 3s may be out before that solving Garmin's bugs.

A low cost power reading concept below : The use of force x distance = power. 1) force = chain tension, 2) distance = (feet / second) x second or speed x time. (distance is chain distance, ground distance is unnecessary) There are three preloaded inline idler rollers to pick up chain tension and speed. Idlers 1,2,3 are floating with top chain. At rest the chain passing through idlers zigzag along a V shape path through idlers 1,2,3 while idler 2 is at its lowest point wrt idlers 1,3. As chain tension increase, chain pushed idler 2 from its lowest point with a displacement in proportional to chain tension. Tension data is full of chain harmonics that needs to be averaged out. The chain speed is mixed with a local time clock to deduce chain distant data. This is a least sophisticated way from mechanical view is offering an low development and production cost option.

Paddle and crank-arm sensors do not produce torque data directly. It uses two 90-degrees sensors and computing power to produce torque data. That made hub type power superior as it uses a single strain gauge measuring torque directly. It is however more mechanically and electrically challenged to implement, hence its price.

+James Bland I've had one since they were released in September, and it's been good. With a clean and lubed drivetrain, it matches my coaches CompuTrainer for the full range of power up to over 1kw. During FTP tests or interval sessions, a clean drivetrain means I'm within 3w+/- but it averages out to equal to the computrainer. However, when my drivetrain is dirty, I can really see how much power is lost through a dirty drivetrain. It's about 10%, so around 20w at 200w and 30w at 300w. The next session I had a clean drivetrain, and it matched again.

The weight argument against the G3 hub doesn't mean anything, 200-300 extra grams on a rear wheel means nothing unless you're racing long distances up grades of 8% or higher, nor does the extra drag from a shallower rim or a few more spokes.

I sell bePRO on duvobikes.com . $40 discount code available - probably the best offer available.
@duvobikes39538 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris - I have been selling & riding them for a year. Zero warranty returns, one buyer bought them to swop between his road bike and MTB (I dont recommend). The pedals on their own are excellent quality - better than a known brand. I have ridden SRM for 8 years & believe the bePRO will last just as long. full spares are available at sensible price

It's a Specialized S-Works Road, but we're not sure if they're normally available in the custom Procycling colours.

I've recently began looking into power meters. I have been leaning toward the Garmin pedals. I do not race, I enjoy getting out and doing just for the fitness. Would these be a good starting point?
@hossesarse8 жыл бұрын
What are your goals, Josh? A power meter can be helpful if you want to improve and challenge yourself, but if you just want to get outdoors and enjoy riding, all the power, heart rate, and other meters can detract from your pleasurable & meaningful experience. It's easy to "Froome-out" and spend so much time focusing on your wattage and data that you never look up, which is one reason I force myself to put my Garmin in a jersey pocket and just get out and ride without letting the average watts and speed dominate the ride.
@joshbissenden12078 жыл бұрын
I think my goals are to get out and get myself back into shape after a long winter of really not doing much. I look at tons of data in my career as an IT professional, plus all the new technology really interests me. I recently added cadence to my Garmin. The first few times I was out I averaged between 80-90 and maxed around 110-115. I didn't think that was all bad considering I sometimes have a hard time getting out.

Hey Josh. A powermeter can be useful even to a non-racer, but it won't automatically give you motivation. Are you already using a heart rate monitor? That would be the best place to start. IMO it would even be silly to have a power meter without a heart rate monitor. If you live somewhere with harsh or wet weather, you might also benefit more if you get an indoor trainer and there are a TON of great Tour de France videos and indoor training videos on KZbin for watching while riding your indoor trainer. I have Kreitler rollers with the resistance fan that blows directly on me to keep me cool while riding indoors. Even though I live in San DIego County, nearly half of my training miles are done on the rollers. Some people hate riding on indoor trainers, but I enjoy the ability to focus well on training hard without having to worry about the distractions of stoplights, stopsigns, vehicles, weather, flat tires, and all the other little interruptions. In addition to the Watts-per-kilo measurement. It's also really helpful to compare your heartrate-to-watts, to see your improvement. Check out GCNs (Global Cycling Network) KZbin page. They have a lot of indoor training sessions, and helpful advice about power meters. If you have already been training seriously and definitely know you'll be using it a lot, any of these meters would be great. If you are hoping this novelty will make you want to ride more, I'd get the cheapest one available, because you'll still have the measurements. And if there is a chance the novelty of knowing your watts may eventually wear off and you might not enjoy it as much, which would be a shame if you spent all that money on the SRM or one of the high dollar meters. Have fun, be safe and don't forget to ENJOY the process.

I have a heart rate monitor with my smart watch, however, it doesn't have the capability to sync to my Garmin. I would imagine I need to get a heart rate monitor made by Garmin to get the most out of that. As far as a trainer, I had one but it was a cheap one and it surely felt that way when I used it. No resistance whatsoever, so I never really got into doing that. I would absolutely love purchasing a quality trainer for those long winter months, I live in Michigan by the way, it can get brutal. I have recently been scanning the internet for trainers among other things related to cycling and I saw that they are now compatible with my Garmin which is really cool, cause I love looking at data, plus, it'll keep me in shape too. Do you have a trainer preference?
@hossesarse8 жыл бұрын
Josh Bissenden HI again Josh. I'm a big fan (heh, unintentional joke) of Kreitler rollers with the "Killler Headwind" attachment. But everyone is different. The Killer Headwind is a fan that provides both a lot of resistance and a nice cool wind on you. The harder & faster you go, the more cooling wind blows on you. I got them because they are made in the US, but the downside is you can't really stand and sprint on them, and also the fan can't get you much beyond 800W before the air starts "slipping". I don't work for Kreitler (or anyone in the bike business) and just because it works great for me, you might prefer a fixed mount trainer, or a mechanical or fluid resistance unit, because it might be more likely to let you stand and sprint past 800W. Basically a verbose way of saying "My preference might not be your preference." Having an HR monitor compatible with your Garmin will enable you to download your workout data onto Garmin Connect, with all the graphs, totals, averages, and other neat metrics that will make your inner nerd giggle like a schoolgirl. As fun as the data is, I've had better results by focusing on breathing, position, staying hydrated and maintaining a fluid spin over the wattage and other numbers. It's funny, just looking at my current HR a little too long can make it go up a few bpm. Good luck and have fun!

what is the differnce between the cadence number and the power wattage number, are they relative? if you have cadence meter do you still need power meter. last question, if i am not a racer but want to improve, which one would be a reasonable investment. i am not willing to spend thousands on this.

No prev experience w/ power meters, but I'm totally satisfied. Set it and forget it. No calibration. Never a data dropout or weird spike. Like others said, battery access doesn't require removing cranks, at least on a Cervelo R3.

Cracking review demo the best so far. Shame I didn't watch this before upgrading my Crankset :(
@justinbouchard4 жыл бұрын
46 seconds in and I have to chime in. Gonna watch anyways but here's my thoughts. Your pedals have movement sensors in them and so do your cranks. If the movement sensors in your pedals are moving, they are going to absorb some percentage of the power that's going to be recorded by the crank arm sensors. And vice-versa. I can definitely understand why you wanted to run them at the same time but to me it was a mistake. How can the sensor on the crank or the pedal measure the correct wattage when they both are simultaneously being stressed?

Power2max or Quarq does not fit Shimano cranksets. You need to buy the Rotor as a replacement for P2Max and the chasis which incl the Red arms and new GxP BB for the Quarq.

How is a set of pedals more transferable than a rear wheel?

It's not, but it's more transferable than a rear hub. If you have multiple bikes and wheelsets then you only need to buy one pedal based power meter.

Beacause of top nine was chossen depending on money those manufacturers paid for their toys? ;) Anyway powerpod has no GPS unit and need additional classic speedometer from wheel speed, no cadence in powerpod-basicly for this price around $300 you can not even register you track.... for me it is useless...
