Excellent advice as always; When people ask me what is the best vehicle to buy, I always say, one that's been well looked after. Age isn't a huge barrier to me, I choose based on mileage and condition. If the vehicle is low to medium miles, has all maintenance records, and looks to have been loved, it will love you back by taking you and your things everywhere you need to be and bring you home again safely, reliably and without any drama. No one brand is any better or worse than any other, it's how the individual vehicle has been treated that matters.

Of course, education on that question is the key. It all depends on a wide variety of factors. Wt and length of the fiver, where it's going to be traveling, what kind of road will be traveled on, how much is gonna be carried in the trailer and truck and so on. Oh, yeah, don't forget mountains. A truck that can pull well on the flat might not get up a steep mountain slope without trouble. I own a 29ft 1988 Fireball with no slides. I intend to take it to a lot of different areas, so I'll stick with a 3/4 ton diesel.

Sound advice you provided however, if they plan to travel a lot, I would recommend a dually vs a SRW. The added stability and extra wheels should you have a mishap makes a big difference.

I had a 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with a Duramax and I towed a huge camper trailer with it. It towed it like it wasn’t even there, and sometimes I would forget I was towing a trailer and often made too sharp of a turn and it hit a curb.

Excellent recap of items to look for in a used tow vehicle, with one exception, the payload capacity of the 3/4 ton vs the 1 ton. If the 5th wheel is in the 12k - 16k GVWR range it will quickly max out or exceed the payload capacity of a 3/4 ton pickup. If one is comfortable in going over this limit, but respecting axle and tire ratings, it can be done. If they're not comfortable with that, then a 1 ton is the way to go for that load. Towing capacity with a diesel shouldn't be an issue in either 3/4 or 1 ton trucks, just payload. BTW, love your channel!!

Let's not forget to mention height of truck bed, in relation to hitch and gap between bed rails and bottom of rv 5r. Need the 5r to ride level AND maintain a 5" gap minimum between truck bedrail and bottom of rv when hitched. Ride level or cause unnecessary wear on one axle. My new Ram sits 6 inches taller than my last truck.

Thank you for your information! I'm not sure if it was even THIS video, as I've watched dozens of your videos. But here's the scoop.... We ALMOST Bought a 2017 Dodge Ram 3500 yesterday, but then I realized that it did NOT have the AISIN Transmission. This would have been a devastating mistake that would have cost us almost $60,000. for a truck that would not have been capable of towing whatever large 5th wheel we are about to purchase. I sincerely can't thank you enough for your videos.

One other thing to think about when getting a truck. We found out that the F350 (2017) has a cheaper tax (tabs) rate than the GMC 2500 (2015) that we had just because our state (MN) considers the 350/3500 a commercial vehicle and the 250/2500 a personal vehicle and the taxes are much less on the commercial truck. No one told us about this. If you want a 250/2500 but can easily afford the 350/3500, I would go with that. Check your local state tax rate for each version.

Hello again Big Trucks! I need to ask you, why use the dive through? I never, unless it's be cold/icy/raining very hard!! As far as the buttons being worn, I've found using gloves a lot while driving will do that. As far as buying used? That's. It a great idea, mainly because the diesel trucks hold their value so well, you really only save money in a rig that has a lot less life left! I would buy a stripper at 45k, than a loaded rig with anything over 40-50 k miles! If price matters that much, maybe a gas truck is for you!

I really appreciate your videos and love the advice you give; however, how do I narrow my search for a tow vehicle that will actually pull my 5th wheel RV? I know that my 5th wheel RV dimensions are 42 1/2 ft. in length, 8 1/2 ft. in width, 13 1/2 ft. in height. Dry weight is 14,610 lbs., Payload Capacity is 3,390 lbs. GVWR is 18,000 lbs. and Hitch weight is 3,560 lbs. I know it's a big and heavy 5th wheel, but how do I determine what truck will actually pull this RV safely? Where do I crunch the numbers and know for sure before taking the plunge and buying a truck that might not meet my needs? When I was shopping for my RV, a couple of dealerships I visited tried to tell me that my Ram 1500 would be able to pull the RV. I knew better, but those guys were supposed to be knowledgeable and RV experts, but they were just trying to make a sale (I bought elsewhere). I want to be responsible and find something that I won't waste my money on and regret later. Any suggestions?? - Thanks.

Well answered, we are also looking for a 30 to 35 foot range fifth wheel topping out around 15000 lbs fully loaded. We are probably going to get a RAM 3500 or equivalent, long beg SRW. I don’t think i have seen a video from you about extended warranties on used trucks. Thanks

Within the full range of Diesel engines; Cummins is by far the most widely used, (in my humble opinion)! So, with that said, it’s a bonus for the motoring public to have the option of being able to select this motor through their purchase of a RAM TRUCK, to tote their trailer of choice. Just saying.

Great videos you put out! I have a question about finding out the value on a truck I'm looking at. It's a 2017 F450 XLT 12,000 miles with some factory up grade options. They are asking $59888. I've looked online at KBB, NADA, and there's a big difference in what these two say the value is. KBB has it valued at 52-53k and NADA at 58K. Do you have recommendation on finding accurate vehicle value? I'm trying to be as knowledgeable as I can before I walk in the Ford dealership. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi....Question; I have a 2002 Ford F350 Lariat 7.3L International Diesel Dually. My 5th Wheel is a Forest River Cedar Creek 36RLTS which is 13870 Lbs. Cam My Truck pull my 5th wheel ok? I tried to find the Max tow weight, However I can't find the sticker on the door. Must have been torn off.I did look in the Owner's Manual to find it, but possibly not what I was looking for. I am the 2nd owner of the Truck and I purchased it with 60k miles on it. I had extended maintenance on the truck from the Ford Dealership. Regular maintenances and oil changes and Transmission backflush. I also put in a Gauge Pod to monitor the Temps of the Engine and Tranie. My Truck now has 240,0000 miles. Still going strong.I do used Lucus Oil in my Fuel every Fillup. Thank You for your Videos and instructions on Maintenance. I really learn a lot from them.

WOW !! I just discovered your great informative clips that have enlightened me very much. I am about to retire and I am convinced that a 5th wheel around 40' would be best for our needs. I would let my present mercedes car lease expire and buy or lease a powerful pick-up to tow my fifth wheel. I would use this for everyday driving as well. I was thinking about a FORD F350 with every towing option available (they seem to have more towing extras that any other!!), but hoping not to get the dual wheel version. If I read the towing charts correctly, with the diesel engine I could tow 20,000 lbs., but I am not sure because I find the charts confusing. What would you recommend for a 5th wheel around 13-14M lbs unloaded? I appreciate and value your opinion !!! Thanks... Bruce-NJ

I have an RV question for you. You may have covered this before so if you have let me know which video it is. When you were talking about the weigh safe hitch you hooked to an RV to show how the scale works then you gave us a walk through on the RV. You said you weren't fond of aluminum siding on RV's. I know nothing about them so I was wondering what other types of siding they have and if I decide to get one what else should I be looking for. The one in that video looked pretty nice and the price was a lot lower than I thought an RV would cost. Goes to show how little I know.

So I find a '17 Ram 3500 crew cab lwb 4x4 Cummins, no Aisin. 3.73 axle. Door jamb sticker says 14k GVWR. I thought there was little room for improvement and should be able to get a 5th wheel @44' long with a GVWR of 21k. I'm told that the truck's GVWR of 14k is not the limit of towing capacity. Any help would be much appreciated

So how did lunch taste?? The grill looks nice, and if someone asked me that question I would tell them 1 ton for sure, as you know we as campers will someday upgrade, and having a 3/4 ton will just get you torn apart on the internet and forums about being overweight.

Would you mind doing a video on old diesel trucks from 1973 to to 1998 >>> which one would be best for towing a 28ft - 33ft RV trailer...In my state there is no smog requirement up to the year1998 on diesels, so I'm presuming that means none of those stupid EPA restrictions on going to be on the older ones.... Oh...btw...I was in McKinney Texas a month ago,, couldn't wait to try the Whataburger! uugg! what a disappointment! I even tried it 2x.!! thinking it was just a bad day the first time.....& yes! both times, dry and tasteless!..maybe should not of went to the same place? IDK....but hope you can do a video cuz I need to get a truck but I don't want a newer one...don't want all those emission issues...& I like knowing I' won't have to bother with smoging it every 2 years! I live out West, not hard to find old trucks in good condition...and pamper and garaged .

hey bro, I am looking for a 3/4 ton pickup for hauling a 30 foot fifth wheel RV. I am looking at mostly diesels and have considered gas but I don't think the gas engines are able to tow the trailer. It weighs around 18500 pounds fully loaded with the auxiliary fuel tanks full (there are two of them). My current truck is a 2008 ford F-450 King Ranch with the 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel. It has been very reliable but it struggles to tow the trailer up any hill larger than a 3º grade and struggle to stop going on the highway. I've actually almost totalled the truck twice because the truck isn't able to stop the trailer safely. I would love to hear back from you. It would be helpful if you could even make a video on the topic. Please consider this for a future video.

The best truck to pull a heavy @ss trailer is one that has a 4.11 or higher rear diff. Higher than 4.11 if previous owner put large dia tires on it..

How do you determine the fifth wheel towing capacity of a truck as for example the F350 claims that towing capacity of only 13,000 pounds so where you getting 15000 on a three-quarter ton truck

Trucks are rated for both towing capacity and load capacity. How do these combine when searching for the right truck to pull a 5th wheel? We're looking at a 5th wheel with a hitch weight of 1985 lbs. and a GVWR of 13985 lbs. (UVW 10764 lbs.). Since some of the weight is carried by load in the bed, do I still need a truck that will tow 13985 lbs. or would a truck with a towing capacity of 13000 lbs.and 3000 lbs. load capacity be adequate? Thanks!

Ken Averill I have a 450 and pull a 38' toyhauler that weighs 21,000 fully loaded. It pulls like a dream. My 2500HD I will be pulling a 24' cargo trailer that weighs 10,000 on a hitch with a load distribution hitch. I prefer my 450.

Why don't you do a quarterly Q&A? Post a specific video to ask people for questions. Then post a video with the answers....... or you can do a KZbin LIVE Q&A. Many other channels do this also. Could be fun. Personally, I would love to see more Gas related topics as opposed to diesel. (Towing with Gas).

Chyne20: RAM 3500, GM 3500HD, dually or F450.... I would suggest the F450 only because its increased steering radius can help getting the trailer into tighter spots. Also, Adaptive cruise control would be a big convenience feature for otr driving

What about those of us who can't afford a $20,000- $30,000 truck and are looking for something older than 2012. I've been looking at trucks from the early 70's to early 2000's for towing a 5th wheel up to 35 feet and possibly at sometime a trailer up to 35 foot. Which is the better truck to buy? Do I need a dually? Thanks for any info you can give.

Coutry Girl Look at the tow ratings. The only Ford diesel I'd consider is the 7.3 from before 2003 and even the duallies are borderline for many of the heavier modern fifth wheels. Keep your GVWR on the fifth wheel under 14,000 pounds and you should be ok. Whatever truck you're looking at, just google "towing capacity (truck brand) (truck year)" and you should find the towing guide for that year's truck models.

Most solitudes have a GVWR between 15k-16k with pin weights around 2900lbs. Do you still think an F250 single rear wheel will work? We are looking to buy a Solitude 375RES and I'm being told a minimum of a 1 ton dually. I subscribed to your channel and enjoy all your videos!

Jeremy Nesom Components still fail on the 6.0L trucks. The radiator is not the end-all, be-all fix. Just one part. The 6.4L trucks are way worse. They don't get the amount of bad publicity they deserve.
