Awesome Vid. I appreciate the honesty and showing everybody first hand knowledge with the large pick up trucks. I’ll add one thing based on my experience. I live in Maine. Inspection stickers are required every year. If your 3500 is a daily driver under 10,000 lbs then your inspection will cost 12.50 IF you go above the 10,000 lbs then your inspection is 60.00 bucks. I do know a few that own the large pick ups that don’t work them. Just a daily driver. Couldn’t really wrap my head around that.

I've towed for over 40 years with a 2500 SRW, 3500 SRW, and my current 3500 DRW. My 2013 Big Horn 5th wheel weights 15,500 lbs. My last truck was a 3500 SRW and would get a little ass shack passing semis or when the crosswinds picked up. The dually tracks 100% better. I have the OEM self leveling rear air bags and this truck rides smoother empty and loaded than any 2500 and 3500 on the market. My friends drive all the makes and sizes and I have driven them all. They have also driven my 3500. All 9 of them agree that the Ram OEM air bagged truck is the smoothest ride them all. And the biggest benefit is it automatically keeps the rear at the set height, there is no sag.

@larryarmstrong69733 жыл бұрын
@Jonathan Tripp My/ our dually isn't our daily driver. In fact it's been 30+ years since I've had a pickup as a daily driver so we don't take it to the shopping mall. Lowes maybe but not Wally world. It's for towing and that's pretty much it. It has a solid feel to it. I don't drive it in the winter because there's no reason to. We live in Montana and it's usually too cold to go camping anyway so it sits in the shop all winter. I use my VW Jetta to do all my chasing around. I like getting 35-40 mpg in it. Makes up for the 10mpg we get with the dually when we're towing our 33.5' 5th wheel with our 1000RZR behind it. The aluminum Hillsboro flatbed, in my opinion is the only way to go when towing a 5th wheel. Love it and that's why, even though we really don't need a dually any more, this pickup is perfect for us. We like the long wheel base of the crew cab and the extra seat for putting stuff in for the trip. And we get the looks when we drive in. It's a sharp looking rig.

@JeffinTD3 жыл бұрын
Having towed the same 5th wheel up the same route with a Ram 3500 single, and a nearly identical Ram 3500 Dually- I arrive much less fatigued driving the dually. The SRW handled it fine, but the dually is much more planted, stable and relaxing. Then I got a big 5th wheel that would have overloaded the tires/axle rating of the single rear wheel.
@sw53343 жыл бұрын
I daily drive my dually. I find it easier to park than my SRW truck as you can see the sides of the outer tires, as long as you keep them inside the lines your good to go. Also my dually is cheaper to insure than my SRW was, insurance said it’s cause of all the claims they get from people off-road damaging their SRW’s, people don’t usually take dually’s 4x4ing. Also I find squishy cars get out of my way more cause they are intimidated by the size. Makes my job easier.

Great honest review. I have a Dually simply because it gives me options for towing (goose neck, 5th wheel, truck camper, bumper pull, hot shotting, etc) and yes it cost more and yes I drive a Jeep Rubicon as a daily, but my dually is the last truck I will ever buy. Made the mistake of trading my 2016 Dually for a new 1500 and realized that despite how nice it was, it limited my options and I now had a car, not a truck. Traded back and have a 20 Dually. Probably one of only 3 or 4 vehicles that I have had that I smile every time I look at it. Nothing better.

Great points for and against. I tow a Gooseneck enclosed car trailer as well as a 40' pintle 3 axle boat trailer. Currently my tow vehicle is a Silverado 2500hd 6.0 4x4 extra cab short bed. Maneuverability is great, plenty of power to pull whatever is attached to the back. Always able to get out of loose pack, sand, dirt, mud, while towing. Have also had Duallys, both 4x4 and 2wd. When the trailer wants to "take over", boy is it nice to have that " big a.." out back to set it straight. But, I'm gonna be real, in the snow, mud, or not so "Terra Firma", contrary to what you would think, dually will bury their rears quickly. A few instances actually forced me to remove the outer wheels I order to get out of trouble without disconnecting. To anyone that is really gonna daily drive a full size beast that isn't towing every day, spending 100,000.00 for an uncomfortable ride isn't sensible. If you're pulling trailers regularly, longer distances, traveling frequently, well maybe. But driving locally, mostly dealing with congestion, small parking spaces narrow streets, Teslas, Prius's, Ricky racers, motorcycles, kids on bikes and skateboards, and pedestrians, but need a full size truck for every day use, stick to a single. Don't feel like your less of a man, just smarter! I actually wish there were still S-10s, Toyota SR5s, Datsun(Nissan), small trucks. They really make even more sense now than they did back then, given, congestion and gas prices. GM actually had a fleet service only S-10 that was powered by the EV-1 drive system which the general public couldn't have, which held the EV record at Pikes Peak until recently. That was set in the early nineties. Okay, I'm old and rambling.

Minor concerns for the capability and stability of a dually. I’ve hand nothing but duallys for 16 years and wouldn’t have anything else. I told my brother in law that he needed to sell his srw Ram 2500 that he tows his huge fifth wheel with and buy a dually, he always said he didn’t need it. That was until he had a blow out on the rear and about flipped it. He now has a 21 Ram 3500 dually and said he regrets not getting one years ago.

There is one other disadvantage to having a dually that most people don't realize because they never tow boats. But having four rear wheels on a slippery boat ramp actually works against you because each tire has the load spread out more - each tire presses down on the pavement less. As a result, the dually will struggle to maintain traction when a single rear wheel truck will do much better under those circumstances. For this reason, I always install a locker in the rear axle if it doesn't already have posi because I'm going to the lake a lot. That being said, this is not enough to sway me from owning a dually. To my mind, the advantages of a dually completely outweigh the disadvantages. It's a truck - a REAL truck built to do REAL work.

Please note your comment about insurance is incorrect. A privately registered dually is not blindly treated as a commercial vehicle by insurance. Rates are based on a matrix of factors. Possibly you are confusing wrapped in coverage on your camper, which many do (but may be insufficient for higher end campers and full-time coverage). Beyond what I know behind the scenes, I own a RAM 3500 CC LB 4wd Cummins/AISIN DRW and a RAM 1500 CC LB 4wd Hemi SRW, about the same yearly mileage, full coverage, both same model years and my dually is actually $63 less per 6 mos (just renewed this week). Nevermind it cost me a lot more! 🤣Nevertheless, an SRW cannot handle our 5er's pin weight. DRWs are not for everyone, but having the right tool for the job is right for everyone.

Excellent video but I would strongly suggest - it depends. A huge advantage of the dually is two-fold: 1) Weight that you can tow 2) stability. I have towed with an SRW & DRW and I will never go back to a single axle. Moreover, I can get a 4.10 Rear Gear -which runs through the mountains that I do with my 42ft 5th wheel, I am in the center lane all the way up the mountain. - never get off 70MPH - Stability is the biggest reason for me truthfully.

Yes, I’m building 2 Overlanding Rigs, and one is a dually.....one person commented that certain individuals are drawn to duallys, and the negative aspects you describe, are actually the attributes they enjoy. Both my rigs will be well over 20 feet long, and very heavy. It would never cross my mind to consider putting them inside a garage, I realize you are considering a new vehicle, so protecting it is vital. As for the rough ride, and parking, the type of person interested in a dually, would most likely not be bothered by the ride, because it’s a Truck, built to work hard, as for parking, you don’t get upset, and you don’t try to fit in small spaces.....park at the far end of the lot and walk, and you’re ok with that. It’s a trade off, you get the big truck look and feel, but you give up some convenience.....if you only wanted convenience.......you’d buy a Smart Car. 😲

Driving a 23 year old crew cab dually, now as a daily driver. Gotta park in the back and backing into most spots is easier than front first. To me the biggest drawback is the turning radius of a barge. All of this so when its tow time, it handles the load like a dream.

So with Rambo, I parked all the way at the end and walked. In AZ 26,001 lbs and over is commercial, regardless of what trailer. If it has the capacity of truck and trailer over 26,001 it has to be registered commercial. If you are towing an RV, you don't need CDL in any state, only if you are towing for profit. My wife and I recently purchased an F-150 with the Max tow package, because we are going to get a flatbed trailer to pull around a small frame skid steer eventually. This truck sits up higher than some 3/4 tons and it is easier to back in some tight spots than to just pull in even with single wheels in the rear. However, some people that RV with a big fifth wheel full-time are going to be forced to get a 350 DRW or a 450 DRW in order to have the stability they need. I've even seen full-time RVers with a class A motor coach that is so heavy that they have to get a non-commercial CDL in order to drive it in all states with their smaller vehicle behind in tow. Just like a lot of things in life, there are trade-offs. When you get the big toys, you have to deal with the extra responsibility. Like Peter Parker's uncle said in the original Spider-Man, with great power comes great responsibility! Lol lol

Good points, all. I had no idea about increased cost of registration. Increased insurance makes sense to me. I’m currently in an EB Chevy Camper van, which is also a beast to park. I was dreaming of a dually and a Big Foot truck camper, which would increase total length due to camper hangover. I’ve put that dream on hold for a while since production of both trucks and truck campers is down and prices are way up. Thanks for the objective approach to owning a dually! ✌🏼

There is definitely an art to parking a large vehicle. Most people will try to pull straight in, as you did. I'm a c.d.l. truck driver. The trick is to do a 3 point turn. You aim for the parking space on the far side of the space that you actually want. Pull right up to the vehicle parked in that far space. Then turn the steering wheel all the way the other way & back-up, as far as you can. Then you should be lined up, or almost lined up with the space that you want, & be able to pull right in. On weight restrictions, it is true that you'll probably pay more for registration. But that's only once every year or 2, depending on your state. & you do have to make sure that you've registered enough gross weight to include any trailer that you pull. However, the c.d.l. requirement, for having a gross combination weight of over 26,000 pounds is exempt, for r.v. trailers, so long as you're not using it for commercial purposes.

I appreciate this commentary. I just ordered a 2022 Ram 3500 CCLB 4X4 6.7HO SRW and was on the fence about a dually. I was thinking about changing the order, but it was already assigned a VIN. This video and the comments have helped me accept that I'm getting a SRW lol. Here where we live in rural MT, many of the roads aren't paved, and all the roads are covered to some degree in snow and ice for at least 4-5 months. I do a fair amout of off road driving. I do tow regularly, enclosed trailers, horse trailer, and a 28ft camper - all bumper pull - but they're well within the capabilities of what I spec'd. I've had heavy equipment in the past, and I suppose I wanted the capability to haul heavy if I needed it. Also, a truck like this is just as much a piece of equipment to me as it is a daily driver, and I like to put equipment to work lol. A DRW has the potential for a better return than a SRW. There certainly are operating costs that don't make sense to float unless you're doing it for a living, vs just hauling as a side hustle and taking what loads you're capable of. My primary business is as a carpenter/general contractor, so a SRW suits my needs very well. The dually is beautiful beast though lol... I guess it's a needs vs wants thing lol. Thanks again

Duallys are totally worth it. I pull a flagstaff classic that weights about 11.5kb loaded with all my stuff and it’s a 38 ft trailer. I used to use a short bed tundra and it shouldn’t even be allowed because of how dangerous it is to even go over 60mph on the highways. If you’re pulling anything tall, long, heavy or all of the above, GET. A. DUALLY. The fact that it’s a long box too also helps better plant the truck on the ground ensuring that wind gusts won’t be a problem.

Reading the comments I find most people have good comments. Mine is if you need a dually you need one. I haul a goose neck horse trailer. Combined weight loaded is about 23,000 pounds. The dually provides extra sidewall to give extra stability as well as the added protection if you have one tire blow out or go flat. Yes the problem with parking spaces are that our government is requiring smaller parking spaces to give more parking in the same space. These trucks are not for in town driving or parking, They are for hauling, not grocery shopping.

I've always backed in. I live on a dirt road and don't care if it gets dirty. I'm a disabled veteran so my registration is $16 in Texas. My insurance was $20 a month more than my Toyota Tundra. I'm in the process of getting my CDL because a trailer with a GVWR greater than 12k (This puts it at 26k with 14k + 12k GCWR) is needed. This is very much a work truck and if you can get away with a non-dually and a lower towing capacity you should. Mine is a 2018, so I don't have as many fancy features as the one you're showing. But these are all valid reasons. I would also add that they turn really wide compared to smaller pickups, lanes are not designed to allow for the width of the truck meaning much like that parking spot, you have almost no wiggle room to stay in your lane, especially on backroads. Blowouts on the rear of the dually tend to take out the rear fender. You need to have two extra tires in good shape making it more expensive, and more work. There are definitely a lot of things to consider when deciding to purchase one. Knowing and accepting the differences are the first step to your purchase.

Had a coworker that leases one ton dually trucks. After leasing one from each of the big 3, I asked what she thought of them. The trailer she would tow is a triple axle livestock trailer, typically fully loaded with cattle. She said Ford pulled the best, but you couldn’t drink coffee on the way to work unless you pulled a trailer all the time due to how stiff the suspension was while unloaded. Ram was a close second power wide, but had a much smoother ride. Chevy was the worst on power but seemed to be the best of you weren’t towing. All 3 were diesels.

Is this a dually review for a daily driver or a tow vehicle? Have you ever owned or driven a dually as a daily driver? Good video and applicable to most car-oriented people. I traded my F250 for F-350 dually to tow my 40' fifth wheel and haul heavy loads. The F250 was rated high enough to pull the weight but we were slightly over on the pin weight, so I couldn't add an aux tank or carry anything else. We came back from a trip a couple of days ago and got caught between towns with a 40-50mph side wind and I remember thinking "ain't goin back" to a SRW as long as I have a high profile trailer. Been there done that.

This is silly, i have been living full time with fifth wheel and a ram 3500 dually crew cab long bed for two years. I not have had not problem finding a parking spot and getting my dually parked. This is NOT a reason do buy a SRW vs a DRW. Too many giant fifth wheels are being pulled by a SRW when they definitely should have a DRW. Sure sometimes you have to make a couple of more turns in tight spots but its no big deal. The registration fees are more, yes. I’m registered in Fl so we can tow up to 26K or ANY RV, no mater how heavy. I hope this does not discourage people from buying a DRW if they really do need the extra capacity to tow their fifth wheel. You covered a lot of great points in the video. Larry
@JB_WhoWork3 жыл бұрын
The goal of this video was really to dissuade people from buying big tow behind RV’s thinking they can live with a big truck. In most cases, a Dually is the only truck people should be using for larger fifth wheels and especially toy haulers but it may make since to buy a smaller trailer if you can’t live with a DRW Everyday.

@fredv74872 жыл бұрын
Your points are valid to an extent. The problem I see is that the dually is way more stable then the single wheel. And only looking at your convenience should not calculate into safety. So when you blow a tire or your load shifts and your trailer begins to wag tell us how great it is that you can park in the front row at Walmart. Having way to much truck is far better then not having enough.
@connorjohnson92302 жыл бұрын
Worth noting is that RVs are exempt from the CDL requirement in most states, which can extend to horse trailers or race car haulers with living quarters because they can be registered as RVs, and farm/ag tags or applications can also be exempt in certain states.

Im on my third dually. 97, 05 Ram 11 Ford. All great trucks. I got tired of red on the 05. I live in KS where we regularly have 30-50 mph winds. Dually’s tend to go down the road straighter hauling a box car behind. Sulastic spring hangers and air bags tend to smooth out the empty ride a bit. Another drawback is the wear you get on the drivers. Whenever you turn the vehicle you are sliding one of the tires slightly causing wear. I only get around 25K on them. I tow a 14,000 lb Bighorn. Pin weight needs to be a consideration on SRW. They may be rated to tow 14,000 but the vertical load on the rear suspension needs to be a huge factor in selection.

Manageable but can be a pain. Parking is somewhat of a problem but again, patiently manageable. My absolute biggest issue is winter. Front tires blaze a trail and the rear wheels blaze their own. Rear end is squirrelly. Love the dry ground stability but 4 wheels are better than 6 in the winter.

Great video and good points. It is all about trade offs! I am at the point of no return - I have a 2022 F-350 6.7L 6'8" bed - I now have a 16,800 lb. ATC 5th wheel toy box that I converted to a goose neck. The toybox has 3,500 lbs. of pin weight and when loaded it is over the rear axel rating by 300-800 lbs. pending load placement. I am right on the edge of 26k as well, weighing in between 25.2K and 25.8k fully loaded. The F-350 has plenty of power and tows the trailer fine - but in wind and if you had to do an evasive move - the trailer is in charge - so a dually would be far safer. I have been going back and forth on what to do, SRW fits in the garage - dually will also fit but not allow passage between it and 2nd car in the rear and a small opening between it and a wall in the front - so it will be a PIA to get by. Ride of SRW is better and I like the truck I have with many mods. That makes me jump in it regularly on the weekends in lieu of my DD, I don't see that happening with the DRW. Each serves a certain purpose - the SRW F-350 is the better tool 50% of the time (not towing) but the DRW is better when towing. Trade off's no matter which route I go. F-450 or stick with F-350 I have? First world problems.
