Had to fire someone because they came out of the porta-john on a job site after being in it fit 20 minutes in the middle of summer (because they faded out) due to drugs. I only know it was drugs because he didn’t take the syringe out of his arm before coming out. It was still there, just hanging.

A guy I hired as dishwasher was into metal. As in aluminum, stainless steel, you know, metal. Interestingly shaped metal things would disappear, then reappear, fortunately, clean. The unisex was downstairs. Anyone walking toward the stairs could see the sinks. I was heading to the stairs for some work in the office, glanced through the doorway, and he was getting jiggy with the sinks. Stainless steel sinks. Nothing like firing someone on the spot, but telling them to clean up the spurfna before they leave.

I had what we called the dumb, and dumber twins. They where pretty good friends, but they sucked at doing work. One day, one of the guys stole money, predictably, got fired. Which left the other guy. The other guy was watched with an eagle eye, because we didnt trust him since his best buddy stole from money. He wasnt happy about that, and since he sucked at working, we had to treat him kinda like a child. He Eventually left thankfully. Also, we had one kid who posted a video of himself dancing in the store bathroom with a vape. Somehow, he didnt get fired.

Closet drinking, literally. We had a lovely lady, S, answering the phones, this was 24h business and S liked the nightshifts. Months go by smoothly, but we had couple times when no one had answered the phone, ok it happens, no biggie. Then we started having complaints from clients, either no one answered or very drunk (and giggly) person answered, always happening at nightshift. Ok, S has to go, everybody liked her, but this isnt cool. Maybe a week later we found out her stash of empties, cheap wine bottles, neatly stacked between the couch and wall and another in a semi forgotten closet.. it took over 6 huge IKEA-sacks to haul them all out! Im thinking this wasnt a bottle per night habit, it had to be more.. She really had been sitting in the damn closet too, drinking and smoking, like a true closet drinker would. Sad, but impressive.

I don't think anyone will read this and i can't even guarantee it's going to be interesting. But "Screwball" reminded me of someone i had worked with for a few months. When i was 17 I did an internship as a caretaker and worked with a guy who was in his mid 50s then. He was a bit weird sometimes, regularly dropped racist / sexist comments and was somehow agressive. I obviously didn't like that but as he was my superior I decided to ignore it. We spent much time just driving or sitting in the car, smoking cigarettes and talking. The more stories he told, the better i understood that he was just very unsatisfied with his life. He clearly had some mental issues. Depression and maybe anger control issues resulting from that. Also some physical health issues. One time he told me how he beat up his neighbor after they complained about his small child being to loud or something like that. If i remember correctly his family situation wasn't perfect and he wasn't really valued at work (after making a few mistakes he was told to only do gardening stuff). He also called in sick for a long time multiple times. We got along very well after a while and sometimes I would tell him when he said things that really weren't okay. He was always very kind to me though. Not to brag about myself but it really felt like having someone who listened helped him at least a tiny bit. Some people just need a friend who makes them feel like not the whole world is against them. Be that person for someone and try to understand that *most of the time*, bad behavior doesn't come from nothing. I met him a while ago and we talked for a minute. I really hope he's doing better.

Two jobs ago, we had a pair of employees get fired after one gave the other a VERY public blowie in the parking lot during a break. Also lost a truck driver (same company) who dealt with an IBS flare-up by dropping a deuce in front of an office building right next to the company truck, while the office workers watched in (what I assume was) abject horror.

The guy thought he was hired to be MY boss. I was one of the management team that hired him. At the time I was the head of maintenance at a large factory. He was supposed to help me and the others working under my supervision. His first day comes and he immediately starts berating me for getting some coffee before signing in. He acts all high and mighty towards the others as well. This didn't go unnoticed by the CEO. His behavior was too unprofessional and he was asked to explain why he was so angry. He must have been ignoring everything we said during the interview or he has a "goldfish" memory. The best part was when he argued about his actual position and demanded that every in maintenance was to be fired for being lazy and to hire some of his personal friends. His termination was immediate after wasting 45 minutes of our time.

Anyway, she says her name is Jean they do a background check she passes. A month later, a man who reads the newspaper every day saw a story of a woman who murderd her entire family. Turns out it was Jane she had lied about her ID. They sacked her so fast.

I once asked a manger about their shortest lasting employee. The guy lasted for 30 seconds. Not kidding. Apparently, the last thing he needed before he would be handed his uniform, like the attending assistant manager was holding it prepared to give it, was pass a drug test. Well, he did the test and it came back clean. To celebrate, the guy pulled out a marijuana cigar and smoked it right in from of the manager and assistant manager. He never even put on the uniform.

I used to work in a bank. People got fired for stealing ridiculously small amounts, generally well under $100. The largest I heard of was a manager who stole $54,000 from customers over a period of several years. For about 1 year's salary, he got fired, went to prison and was basically unemployable for the rest of his life. (Because he couldn't be bonded.)

The summer after I finished high school the fast food place I worked at promoted me to shift manager. Since I was so young people acted like I was a dumb kid who didn’t know anything. GM hired a bunch of high schoolers for the summer, totally normal, one was 15. He had 0 respect for any of the women working there. He only listened to the GM and assistant manager. We had a meeting about his terrible attitude and all the shift managers (all women) voted to fire him but the GM said let’s give him one more chance. A few days later I was working the mid shift,meh and another shift manager were closing. It was time for his 10 minute break and he was being so annoyed I said, you know what take an extra 5 minutes. He left for 15 minutes and when he came back he clocked out for his break, I was like you just had your break he whined about how I said he could have an extra 5 minutes so I was like fine go away. I was at the drive thru, other manager was doing inventory in the back. Kid goes on the other side of the counter, there was a half wall so the register for the drive thru was hidden. He started throwing ice at me. I was dealing with a car and I kept getting hit with Ice. At first I thought it was the kitchen crew but after the 3rd one I saw it coming from over the wall. I excused myself from the window and quickly walked around the counter to see him sitting in a chair with a cup of ice and he immediately denied it was him. He was the only person in the lobby. We only had 1 customer in the dining room and they weren’t anywhere near us and I would have seen them walk to our area so it had to be him. I was so angry but held back from screaming at him and whispered you’re fired go home now. I then went back to the drive thru. He went to the other manager and I was like he threw ice at me several times and I’m here talking to customers and being pelted by ice, he’s fired. She was like who’s going to close I said, I will. She said, ok turned to him and said, go clock out. Next day I worked the mid shift again and I told the GM what happened. He came in with his huge father and smirked at me. The GM explained everything from us having a meeting and him getting a second chance and that he threw ice while I was busy with customers. He then told the dad his son wasn’t mature enough to work and had no respect for women in charge and he needed to work on that. My boss was a creep and ahole but that day he had our back. That’s the only time I’ve fired someone. I’ve recommended coworkers be fired but I didn’t have the power to actually fire them, just this time. The other times at that job people needed to be fired my boss took care of it.

To respond to the first comment you made. It's been proven and studies that people are much less likely to steal a large amount of money than a small one. Grabbing a 20, you can think it's too small to be noticed or bothered with. You can still tell yourself that you are a good person. Stealing $1,000, you know it will bring scrutiny, and there's no way you can tell yourself that you're the good guy here.

I used to work with this real piece of work. I’m a preschool teacher, work with Toddlers. One of my first interactions with this lady was her arguing with the assistant manager because she did not want to bring the kids inside for diapers changes, unless they were staying inside. Wouldn’t take anything else. She was sent home early to cool off, and I caught her in the classroom after going in to clean up. She asked me how long I was teaching, and she seemed dumbfounded when I said 7 years. I asked her how long she’d been teaching, and her response was “I haven’t.” We have two sets of rules that we have to follow: the first we call the WACs, which are the state standards and we HAVE to follow or we can be shut down if we’re caught breaking them. The second are the Early Achievers standards, which are optional but makes your school look good, and will pay for teachers to go back to school for Early Education degrees. I’ve been through for the basic certificates before coming to my current school. This lady was angry that I was hired as the lead teacher, and she (who was completely unqualified to teach, and who was hired as a floater) was not going to get the classroom. She would argue constantly. It didn’t matter what it was about, or if I tried to give evidence- she would argue, and when I tried to being up said evidence, her response would be “I don’t want to argue.” I once tried to bring up the Early Achievers requirements since we were accredited, and she looked at me with a blank stare. Fine, maybe she hadn’t heard of them before- she’d been working there 9 months to my understanding. Well, I tried to bring ip the WACs because of an argument with bed placement for nap and her response was “what? Those aren’t a thing.” I… Just had to walk away. She ended up quitting a few months after I started when HR refused to get our manager in trouble because she really hadn’t done anything wrong. She then tried to get a job at our sister school down the street, not realizing she was blacklisted from the company.

The denial thing honestly sounds like kid behavior that these people never grew out of. I mean, we all know what I’m talking about, right? A kid gets caught doing something by adults and presented with irrefutable proof of their guilt, yet still somehow think that continued denial or utter silence will get the adults to back off. I suppose some kids retain that kind of behavior well into adulthood.

My dad told me a story of his craziest firing experience. His company was hosting some sort of potluck (or something along those lines i dont really remember) and they were eating chili or something this one lady had made and they started finding huge chunks of mulch in it. when they told her about it she admitted she had dropped the bowl in the grass earlier but just scooped it back up and served it anyways. This wasnt some mandatory attendance thing she easily couldve just cut her losses and instead served dirt filled chili. He had to let her go after that. Dad then told me maybe 2 or so months later that episode of The Office where kevin spills the chili happened, and he said it was EXACTLY like that.

The same thing happened to from Story 1 (almost)!!! I was at the Dollar Tree buying some stuff for work, and an employee opened up an additional register and told me I could come over. I had a lot of things, he end up the first two, put everything in the bag, and then told me the total (which was only the cost of those two items). I told him I'm buying it for work so they're gonna reimburse me for everything anyway, and I need a receipt that lists each of the items. He insisted that he wanted to help me out and wouldn't let me buy all the items, he was pushing me to steal it ?!? It got really creepy and uncomfortable so I got my stuff and left. After I got home I felt yucky about it so I went back that night and talked to a manager. He was excellent, understood what happened, and told me I didn't need to pay for the items since I was kind enough to come all the way back. So I'm sure I got that guy fired but why did he push me to steal all the stuff??? I'd never met the guy and told him more than once that I wanted to pay. It was the opposite of 'helping me out'

Our company sends a letter to the other company saying "did __ work at ___ at this time period ____ with this job title ____" and we get a reply saying "yes" or "no" if the answer is yes, then all good, otherwise, they don't get the job. It's the national standard. We're not having chats, we're just confirming the CV is legit the replies are literally 1 liners. If you lie about anything on a CV, lie about something else.

Not a manager, but at this point I'm at least a 'trainer' of sorts for new cashiers at work. New kid (I wanna say like, 18 or 19 AT MOST) started. I try not to go all boomer and complain about Gen Z workers, but HOLY MOTHER OF EVERYTHING GOOD, I wanted to smack him on multiple occasions! His attitude 'kinda' sucked, he liked running his mouth more than actually working, and there were times when I genuinely wondered if he was weaponizing incompetence as well. Like, I essentially had to hold his hand to help him check his email and to sign his timecard at least a couple of times. And honestly, there were times I really wanted to tell him to grow TF up before life at least back-slapped him. >∆>;;; There were a couple of times when he got into it with our supervisor because he shut the door and blinds to the office that we use for trainings/timecards/etc. We're supposed to have at least the blinds open to make sure people aren't just screwing around to run down the clock. But the everything blew up when he went to talk to the supervisor about his timecard. IIRC, there were a couple of times when he tried to use 'annual' leave instead of sick leave (or vice-versa. I honestly can't fully remember.) But it ended up escalating to the point that another manager had to step in. After fighting with them and calling his mom (who '[was] a GS-12!'), homie quit then and there. Evidently, he later applied to work at the local CDC (whom a different former coworker's mom worked.) Said coworker recommended that she /ABSOLUTELY/ not hire him...
@StormTheSquid
@StormTheSquid 4 ай бұрын
Devoid of context of anything he actually did wrong (all I can see is you being a grouchy boomer and assuming he'd be lazy because he's young, him complaining about (and seemingly rightfully so based on your attitude) you and your coworkers/supervisors, and a couple of mistakes that make sense as a new worker who's only just entering the workforce, especially if he didn't understand why things had to be done the way they were set up), it sounds to me like you and your coworkers just bullied a kid into quitting then sabotaged his next job like a bunch of absolute troglodytes.
