At 70 years old this year and retired, I finally bought one of these masterpieces from Sweetwater (Deep Cherry G6119 Tennessee Rose) and it was delivered yesterday, 7-5-2023!! WoooHooo! Now the amp '65 remake of the tube amp Fender Twin Reverb (2) 12's will be delivered today! This takes me back to 1967 when the Gretsch/Fender combination was rockin' my world! Peace and thanks for an awesome video!

quick story, I worked at Guitar Center for a couple of years and one day the daughter of the Chief of the Osceola tribe in Florida sold us his White Falcon after he died. Naturally it sold almost immediately and I had the chance to play it before it went out. It was vintage and in great shape and was just excellent. I love that guitar.

Gretsch is out of Savannah now. Georgia Southern Univ. is in Statesboro (about an hour outside of Savannah) and they've worked with the Gretsch to create the Gretsch museum on the campus. Heading over there this weekend to check it out. Excited to see all the vintage guitars.

#9 I bought my Gretch drums in 1967, new. 5 piece Pink Satin finish., still have them. Original everything, no rust on chrome, played them until, 1999. They still sound great! On stage they pick up the swirl of different stage lighting. Shame they don't make 'em like that anymore.

I've played other brands of hollow body and semi-hollow body guitars, but Gretsch feels and sounds distinctly different in a good way, that's why I love my Gretsch. I wanted a "traditional" Gretsch in traditional orange, but didn't want to spend over $1,000USD, so I bought a used 5120. They can still be had for well under $1,000 (one on Reverb now for $400, but not for long), and often they come with a very high quality Gretsch hard case too. Before I bought it, mine had the pickups and wiring upgraded with TV Jones products, and a "rocker" bridge added, plus a beautiful Gretsch hard case (best case I own), all for $600USD. It sounds wonderful playing unplugged, even with a 10-46 set, and sounds even better amplified. The top is thinner than other hollow body guitars, which may explain why it's more resonant, louder, and sounds better. Now that I've gotten used to the knob layout I really like it, and mainly use the master volume, leaving the others turned up all the way. Get your Gretsch on - nothing else sounds like their guitars!

An other fun fact : Raymond Butts (who worked for Gretsch) actually got to the humbucking pickup design with the filtertron before Seth Lover (Gibson) built the first P.A.F, Gibson only got the patent before Gretsch for their pickup ! :)
@dlewtweentorla1210
@dlewtweentorla1210 Жыл бұрын
This story goes much deeper than it appears. Chet Atkins was a friend of Butts (who was an electronics wizard), and asked him if he could come up with an idea to stop the pickup hum in his guitar. Ray said leave the guitar with me and will see what he could do. Spell later Chet got the call from Ray that he came up with an entirely new pickup and come on by to check it out. Chet was amazed with the pup not having any hum, even more amazed the pickup had a much better and fuller tone. After this meeting two things happened, first Chet called Gretsch , told him about the pickups and after some back and forth came up with a financial deal between Butts and Gretsch, regarding ownership and manufacturing of the pickups. Butts then sent the plans to Gretsch who was to register the patents and get all paperwork done. Thing was Gretsch was notorious for being terrible with any paperwork, misplacing, putting off, or even losing it. Which was the reason The Filtertron was not patented before Gibson's PAF. According to Butt's original drawings the Pickup was designed nearly a year before the PAF. Gretsch really dropped the ball. The other part of this which has slightly different details when told by Atkins and Butts, is about the Chet taking Ray to his favorite Music Store in Nashville. Chet wanted his friend and owner of the store to witness these new hum cancelling pickups. While Chet and Ray were in the store, Chet playing the Guitar giving a sample of how great these new PUP's were. Well, what he didn't realize was there was a Gibson employee in the store watching all of this, according to Butts he was even drawing down notes about the pickups. Hmmm, and a while later a very similar in design Humbucker was born at Gibson.

@@L0rd0fTh3N3rdz more diplomatically put, after seeing and hearing the Filtertron , went back to the drawing board with 'new ideas and inspiration' and developed their own version called the Humbucker. LOL. Sad part of this and makes me feel bad for Ray Butts, he had done everything right. Developed a new no hum two cool pickup with great sound , took all the right notes and filled out all he had to for parents. As per his agreement with Gretsch, sent all paperwork and patent applications to Fred Gretsch to fill the company info out and send to the patent office. Where all went sideways, Fred Gretsch was known as being disorganized and lacking with paperwork. The Patents ended up being lost on his desk for months. Otherwise it would be Gretsch known as the inventors of the first Humbucker type pickup, worse is it ended up that Ray lost a pile of money because of it. Personally I'm a huge fan of the Filtertron as they're more articulate than Humbuckers with more chime and nice highs unlike most HB's. If asked to describe the tone, simplest way to say it, like a Humbucker and P90 had a baby and got the best genes each parent had ! When folks say they're only for Jazz , will remind them of Malcolm Young. One of the best rhythm Guitar players ever with Amazing tone with those power chord AC/DC songs. All played on a Gretsch with one Filtertron. The Cult is another Power Chord bands with great tone, again the Gretsch and Filtertron combo. One very odd request a customer asked me to do was install 3 Filtertrons into a Gibson Three Pickup Black Beauty Les Paul Custom. Installed some very cool wiring options with the Filtertrons. To this day it is one of my Fav Les Paul's, has amazing tone and tonal options and is a fantastic player. It's the Customer's number one now.

I've seen the note from Gretsch to Leo Fender. It was nice and pleasant and both parties were very nice and professional about it. Basically it was "please don't use this" and the answer was "no problem." You can see the original not in either an old Vintage Guitar magazine or Fretboard Journal. I got to meet Fred and Dina Gretsch. Nice people! The way the company is setup is Fender oversees guitar production and sales and the family makes drums directly. It seems to work well for both parties.

@@DJBuglip I have played that bass. Sounds fine. I prefer the older single pickup model. Also if you don't like those pickups you can have TV Jones pickups installed. Now think about it. Who gets and keeps an instrument without really trying it out first? Even if you order online, you can send it back. Also a Gretsch bass is its own thing. Its not like a P or J bass clone. For the last 20 years Gretach has been well regarded in their affordable lines of the Electromatic and Streamliners. That's far longer than most keyboard warriors who think they know a thing or two.

Have a Gretsch g5220 as well as their short scale bass. Both are exquisite instruments, affordable, and very quality builds especially for their price. Have my eye on one of their Streamliners now with the P90 neck PU/broadtron bridge PU as well as one of their acoustic electrics. Here's the two things to consider as I see it if you're interested in Gretsch... 1. Does the classic throwback/hot rod style suit you and inspire you to play? You said you got a Dinky. That's a vastly different look. No judgement only observation. I've owned a Dinky reverse and I loved it. 2. While the Gretsch can AND will do anything and everything genre wise that other guitars do and do them all well (play metal through mine occasionally and sounds killer) The tonality does have that something extra that you may or may not care for. I happen to love it. ESP or Epiphone may be the better route depending on your preferences. With all that said. I wholeheartedly stand behind Gretsch and now play only their line. I'm very much in love with the quality, tones, and appointments for the $ I spend and I dig the crap out of their look. They stand out.

i been playing guitar for 30 years. when it comes to electric guitar i always considered myself a Les Paul guy. like everybody i have a Tele and it's the Hammer that a Tele is, but i much prefer Gibson scale to Fender and i prefer the way a Les Paul plays compared to an SG tho i like SGs very much. at 12 years old i heard the first *real* rock n roll that wasn't country rock and IT WAS INSTANT LOVE for old school rock that still goes strong to this day almost 40 years later. that music was 2 records, Highway To Hell, and Back In Black. only now, all these decades later, after his passing and having sat down and played the first Jet i ever tried, it crashed home like the Hammer of God. i'm *known* locally as a very *solid* rock rhythm guitarist, get in tight on the drummer's right hand and stay there, drive that *beast* like it's a rally car and hope like hell you don't flip it on a corner. it wasn't *Angus* and his SG that so dramatically changed a 12 year old boy's life forever, *it was Malcolm all along* Malcolm and his Double Jet. that *dirty bright growl* of an A chord getting snatched out of a Jet pushing a Marshall to it's limits? that's all Malcolm. and the way the man used an open D chord, THAT'S A JET. that tone lives inside me as long as i breathe long story short, i now have a g5655t (i got it for it's shimmering clean tones but the BTs have teeth and they can bite) and am getting 2 Jets, both hard-tail, one with p90s. tho i think my Jets will be Single Cut instead of Double. cutting the top "hump" of the Jet you lose the last little bit of natural bass from the body (lows resonate in the "shoulders" of a guitar body) and i want that tiny bit of low shaping in a guitar as *bright* as a Gretsch, tho Mal played with bass rolled way off anyway, so the Double was *perfect* for him.

10: Ray Butts designed a humbucker (later to be called filtertron) with Gretsch before Seth Lover did the PAF with Gibson. He did so by connecting two single coil pickups serially and out of phase to solve hum problems. Gibson was just faster than Gretsch to acquire the patent.

Just got a Junior Jet II bass as I wanted to try a short scale. Love the look, but still a beginner with my playing. One unusual aspect - it has a walnut fret board, which looks awesome and very smooth, and apparently the radius of the neck is like a Gibson. Gretsch just has a unique look to it, and seems to still have big name artists playing them. I understand Mike Kerr of Royal Blood has played this same Junior Jet II model, which is saying something for a very affordable bass (that he plays like a lead guitar), although plays another make now. Anyway, great video. Might have to check out their drums eventually!

Gretsch is also why Filtertrons still exist. It was the same situation as with the light bulb, the telephone, and many others, where two guys invented the same thing. Whomever is first to file a patent is the one who gets credit, and the other is forgotten. Not so this time. Gibson went with the humbucker design, while Gretsch went with the Filtertron design. Both guitar brands became iconic, so both pickup designs still exist today. So, what is the difference between a Filtertron and a humbucker? Well, functionally, there isn't any. They are just two solutions for the same problem. However, Gibson became more popular, and the humbucker was along for the ride. Nowadays, Gretsch is cool again, and the Filtertron is still along for the ride.

I have a 1955 Duo Jet. In the course of doing maintenance and repair, you can see the label inside the body cavity printed "Fred Gretsch Co. 60 Broadway, Brooklyn, N.Y. along with the serial number. But you also see that it is not a solid body in the true sense. The top is a plastic material and the arch top is achieved by a series of wood shims glued in place under the top. It may appear carved like a Les Paul but most definitely is not. No matter...still sounds glorious!

Gretsch Penguin is the Rolls Royce. at least you drive a Cadillac, you'd play a Falcon, they call to every guitarist that lays eyes on one, "play me!". no Penguin ever said "play me", they say, "lock me behind bullet-proof glass and never touch me". funny thing is, a custom shop Falcon costs the same as a custom shop Penguin, but were i a man of wealth and means i'd get a Falcon to play, a Duo Jet to play, and a Penguin to display behind glass. and we're not talking a REAL antique Gretsch Penguin, just the re-issue. interestingly, the Falcon and Penguin are named after whatever color they are, they just only ever came in white, so White Falcon/White Penguin. but if i got a couple of customs the Falcon would be White, but the Penguin i'd get in Black. black is a fairly traditional color for a Jet and the Penguin is a fancy Jet but the Jet i'd be playing instead of the Black Penguin would be a Silver Sparkle Jet. ah, to be a man of wealth and means, eh? not being such a man, i plan on getting a couple of Electromatic Jets to keep my new Electromatic Broadcaster Jr company and i'm good. don't even want a Rat-Rod. we'll not much, anyway, the red pick-up covers are off-putting and no there's not a simple, practically free solution to cover or remove the red LA LA LA, I'M NOT LISTENING! I WON'T GET A RAT-ROD! ok, probably a Rat-Rod too. *sigh* YES AND the "es 335" style centerblock double-cut with hard-tail, that goes without saying, OBVIOUSLY. Gretsch are determined to drive me to The Poor House. but imma have some outstanding gear with me and the jams will be *epic* because me and Gretsch won't be the only ones there. last 6-7 years and particularly last 4 EVERY guitar company has stepped up a *good few* notches in the starter range right through to the top of the mid-range in ALL *brand* guitars coming from China, Indonesia, and Korea. and prices, if anything, getting *lower* it's insane! that's why i want to snag a couple of Jets, a nice Epiphone Les Paul, maybe a Prophesy AND the "inspired by Gibson" 59 that everyone is raving about. i already picked up a particularly nice Squier Tele with a lightly-roasted maple neck and fretboard that is worth what i payed for the whole guitar. it feels and plays (minus the mediocre fret *wire* ) like a well-seasoned 20-30 year old Tele neck. a light-medium roast you got a neck that feels like a good Fender neck from the 60s. light to light-medium roast for a lovely solid, aged, dependable neck feel. medium to dark roast is novelty, it doesn't feel "age-seasoned" anymore it feels, well, *cooked* . it's not a bad feeling. hard, slick, almost oily. some love it, some hate it, i think it's neat, but not for *every* guitar. if i were to design a thoroughly "modern" guitar for myself that had bolt-on or neck-through-body neck it would be medium-dark roasted maple w/fretboard. it goes through chocolate coloring with the roast, rich, dark slick, browns. then some of that new gold-colored fretwire that's, "allegedly", hard and smooth and durable as stainless steel, and a "yet-to-be-decided" shaped inlays of golden mother-of-pearl. top quality graphite nut, gold locking ratio tuners in upside-down in-line configuration swept back not "Fender" parallel. oh, and Luminlay side fret-markers because. that's the neck done, lol. EVERYONE loves a light to light-medium roast on a maple neck, tho. unless you really, REALLY like new gloss necks. i tolerate gloss necks, that tolerance stops at the fretboard tho.

The most intersting thing I know is that it's an open debate whether the Filter'Tron or the Humbucker came first. Two very different solutions to the same problem. Humbuckers have more output and different tonal characteristics. 'Trons need more amplification, which has a lot to do with their unique sound.

I was a dedicated LP player for years. Saw and heard a Gretsch about 5 years ago and haven't looked back since. LP's will always have that special place in my heart but ever since playing a Gretsch g5220 for the first time, I have to say that there is just a certain something in its tonality that is epically more me. Handles every style I've thrown at it including metal with ease, quality, and distinction. Huge fan.

Yes Will..I got me a few months ago, a G5220 in Casino Gold..a beautiful looking guitar for ridiculous small money. Fit & finish are faultless (made in China..so what?) I play mainly blues/rock & it delivers!

@@JohnTaylor-np9my Sweet, mine's in the jade green which tends to seem more blue or even more blue-gray depending on lighting but definitely sharp. Faultless as well. Not a single complaint. Also have the short scale bass in the walnut stain which appears more blood red in person...also a steal for the price, quality, and tone. Now I just need a Gretsch acoustic electric to finish my holy trinity.

@@JohnTaylor-np9my OH man! That is a beautiful guitar. Been looking at that one. I have basically become obsessed with Gretsch Guitars over the last couple years! Got the Electromatic Semi with Center Block - in Speyside Natural amber. And the Streamliner that is almost identical - in Gubmetal Blue. Both absolutely gorgeous, and both with the Bigsbys and Broadtrons. Also go the Full Hollow with Bigsby - in Mahogony grain dark red-ish. Also gorgeous. What really surprised me the most was... that the Full Hollow ROCKS! I knew the Semi's would... but the 2420 Hollow smokes!! It has those BT-2S Broadtrons, and wow! I was shocked. All of them rock!

I just bought a G5222 in natural... absolutely adore its looks, feel, and sound. It's so much more of a guitar than I am a guitar player, I'm a born again beginner but I just HAD to have one. Hoping to get it restrung soon with 11 or 12 gauge with a wound G. This guitar is my "Rolls Royce" ... I know that sounds corny, but every time I pick it up! Especially for what it cost, mind blowing :)

In the 1990s gretsch and Chet Atkins parted ways. The Country Gentleman was changed to the Country Classic until the early 2000s when the endorsement went back to Gretsch from Gibson. In that period you can find some Chet Atkins signature Gibsons.

I always wanted a Gretsch, so couple of months ago, I picked up a 5410 Electromatic semi hollow. It was nice to look at, but it was a PITA to play. It was pretty much a large acoustic and felt like one when playing it. Also, Bigsby did a nice job of frequently going out of tune even when not being used. I wish I'd went with a Jet tbh. I traded it in on a Telecaster FMT. I'll eventually get a Jet, as I love the look and sound, but the semi hollows just aren't for me.

Gretsch should build a huge monument to Duane Eddy, Chet Atkins and George Van Eps....the only 3 players that could make a Gretsch sound great. Duane Eddy sounded terrific right out of the gate back in the late 50's with his G6120. Chet's early recordings sounded thin and tinny to me but by the mid 60's he got his Country Gent sounding mighty fine. (not to take anything away from his musicianship....nobody could touch him). Van Eps was a 7 string jazz player who always sounded great.

Maybe you could address the allegation that the Gretsch-Fender alliance has been defrauding the public for some time now with the Gretsch Duo Jet short-scale bass guitar. That instrument is sold as having two humbucker style pickups. However under those pickup covers are single-coil pickups. Until this is cleared up, I am unable to trust either company.

I didn't expect humbuckers in mine, so I have no problem with it. It isn't like my Fender/Squier p-bass has humbuckers. And Gretsch uses filtertron instead of humbuckers anyway (as others mention here)? As long as the build is solid and tone is good, I'm happy - I got it for only $280 shipped, so what's to complain about or mistrust? Every reviewer seems to love the tone as-is, and I will live one without worry about it 🙂
@comparedtowhat2638
@comparedtowhat2638 2 жыл бұрын
Filtron pups are similar to humbuckers. The height, spacing, and wrap differ which is why Gretsch holds a patent on them. Filtron and humbuckers came out around the same time. FYI, these days Gretsch uses TV Jones Broadtron pups in many of their guitars. Several reviewers have complained about this model. There was a hum that shouldn’t have been there. One reviewer pulled the pups apart and found they were not mini humbuckers as advertised. So fraud, plain and simple. If you are OK with that so be it. The Gretsch website has since changed the description to read single coil pups. However it took some reviewers and consumers to complain before that change was made. Enjoy your single coil pups with 60-cycle hum. I still don’t trust Gretsch or Fender anymore.

Though few can dispute their side of cool, vintage Gretsch has the poorest fit of all the storied marks--binding rot, finishes etc... Vintage dealers often claimed they weren't on par with Gibson or Fender of the same period.
