What's the deal with Lulu? || character design & lore discussion

Alright, so, Pix is a crazy ass pixie that causes semi-mischief and does what he wants. He’s also bored from being in the Glade forever so he goes and finds a yordle (who lives in a sub-dimension of the glade that borders the physical world). He finds young Lulu and takes her back to the glade to corrupt her, knowing how impressionable yordles and children are. Basically, Pix is a kidnapper making and watching Lulu lose her mind for fun. That’s how I like to think of it.

I want to think that she embodies the "Wild magic" part of Ionia, where Rakan and Xayah come from. This place where magic is free an crazy and whimsical and exciting. And Lulu just runs around being that: a magic creture that casts random spells and has random ideas and does magic because she feels like and because it's fun. Even Rakan also points out that wild magic sometimes does annoying/dangerous things, but that that's part of its charm.

So we have a Yordle who's SUPER magic and is contingent on her hat, and Cat who's Pretty Damn magic and is contingent on her Yordle Book... Lulu needs to be aestherically in line with Yuumi with her magic and stuff

Oh snap that makes a lot of sense. Lulu is a mage who went missing for a while and is now traveling the world. Yuumi is traveling the world looking for her owner who is a mage who went missing. Lulu is Yuumi's owner.

An easy fix, in my opinion, would be to change that Lulu isn't from the Glade but from the same forest that Zyra was from and expand that forest to also be the home of "the fae", since Lulu has a sort of faye/wild nature type of look to her, with the wild hair the bright colors, and her ultimate is even "wild growth". This could help Zyra's origins as well, since we just accept that she is a plant that takes on human form but we don't really know how, but with expanding the forest background and saying that it is the fae homeland, then it would imply the forest is imbued and overfilled with magic which then leads to plants becoming sentient and basically "polymorph" themselves into human form. Following that, it would also account for why Lulu would look more like an elf/little human because she is used to all these weird plants looking like humans and the fae are purple little fairies, so Lulu then embodies what they are, also leading for why she has a mischievous and "fun loving" nature, because the fae are just like that. So, instead of it being a "Bandle City but more" it'd be a "magical forest brimming with overloads of mana/magic that make the plants able to become sentient and change form like Lulu's polymorph". A two birds with one stone fix. You could then change Lulu's motivation from wanting to find the Glade from just wandering around and hoping she finds it to her wanting to bring the magic of the forest to the rest of the world to "help spread joy and fun" to everyone she meets but this results in chaos because her idea of joy and fun is...off, to put it simply. This would embody the plant mentality of wanting to grow and overtake, like Zyra has as a plant from the forest, but in a fun and whimsical way in the form of Lulu spreading magic and mischief everywhere, thus making it that she reflects the values and personality of the forest. I think that'd really do wonders for her backstory while still making sense in the lore of Runeterra and currently existing places of modern LoL, and also expanding and helping another champion like Zyra who is lacking in the lore department. Not only that, but she's even in a fucking jungle/forest in her splash art already, I mean how perfect is that?

As a support main, Lulu is one of my favorite supports and fucking love that "Lulu is 50% hat!" As for her lore maybe they could have done "All yordles are magical, but Lulu's magic seemed far greater than any Yordle, she was able to change the physical forms of other creatures whether it be turning them into harmless creatures, inanimate objects, or even chanting an incantation that empowered those she liked into an unstoppable force. Magic no other yordle has been able to use or even control." Instead of "She went to SUPER Yordle land."

It's bugging me as hell because as a person who loves to play Jhin I have an obligation to remind You the importance of number 4 and ALL yordles have 4 fingers not 5 but 4! for sure late to the party here but while I was watching an idea hit me for how her lore could work in keeping with the yordles usually ending up bring a representation of a region and assuming lulu IS supposed to be the one for bandle city, what if she were the one to first venture out through the portals, to sorta discover how they work its a bit simplistic sure and definitely comes with its own issues but I reckon that'd resolve the issue of her not really being particularly magic in comparison to the other yordles now

The glade i think is a place in the spirit realm, where all the magic from runaterra and spirits like pix. And bandle city is like another dimension tied to runaterra like the void. And lulu is like the yordle tied to the glade or the spirit realm/primordial magic

Another flaw in Lulu's character outdated character model is one that isn't immediately noticeable on her base skin, only her pool party skin- stripped of her body-covering robe, it's horribly apparent that her head is bigger than the entire rest of her body. It's a consequence of the general low-detail models of the era, where they simply didn't expect you to zoom in and study the models in detail, which is why they tended to have exaggerated features (the infamous "pizza feet" for example). Also, you didn't talk about the story she shares with Tristana, except perhaps as an oblique reference when you were talking about her potential as a comic relief supporting character rather than a protagonist.

Yordles are sexually dimorphic in that the males are visibly furry and more beastial and the females aren't. (No idea about fizz now with his lore update.) I don't write it, I'm just trying to explain it.

Sexual dimorphism is weak fantasy race design, is more the point I'm going for. It's EXTREMELY overplayed, first of all, especially in video games, and it plays directly into some very boring conflations of gender and biological sex that lead to rote, uncreative character design (see for instance the almost HILARIOUSLY silly sexual dimorphism of WoW in the early days: www.wired.com/2007/05/sexual-dimorphi/)

Except that she turned the mushrooms back into kids, transformed the warriors' weapons instead of punishing the warriors, and cares about the Order of Shadows being puffed-up pricks instead of flipping out over them violating some minor code of hospitality. 8:00: So, Lulu is kind of a yordle squared? 11:45: The whole 90's-era Disney canon is a great database for examining both how "I want to fit in" can work and how it can...very much not. You need some specific way that the protagonist doesn't fit in, some obstacles built around that, and a story built around those obstacles that meshes neatly with the protagonist and their quirks. 14:05: Alternate solution: Lulu looks and acts a lot like a elfy, fae-ey magical creature. Sever her connection with Bandle City and her character design works a lot better. (It probably won't cheese off the fandom any more than radically altering her character design.)

I like her gameplay, and her design (agree it needs an update.) But i never liked her personality. Kenocka It means in the story, as opposed to in the real world. If yordles existed with us the way dogs do, then sexual dimorphism would be the appropriate explanation. But they do not; human minds created them, and human minds decided to make the males fuzzy and the females more human looking. I am, and suspect TB Skyen is as well, interested in why the human minds created the Yordles that way. The Folding Ideas KZbin channel does a better job of explaining this, I feel; I cannot copy links on mobile, but if you search for 'diegesis' and 'the thermian argument' (though I would not call this 'creepy garbage'), you can get an solid explanation of these ideas
