Great video, thx :) I spent a month in Montanita in 1997. Back then it was a chilled place for locals, travellers and surfers. The nearest ATM was a bus ride to Salinas. We lived in the shell of a newly constructed farmhouse near where the river meets the beach, complete with mosquitoes and fleas and mice, for $2 a night. The beaches were empty during the week and the biggest nightlife was only a few bars (one had a little dance floor), or a fire on the beach with a pop-up bar and a guitar. Ciggies were $0.50 a pack, a bottle of rum was $2, and the caipirinhas were explosive. Perhaps the happiest month of my life! Skinny dipping under the moon and stars... good times, good people.

I love Montanita! I'm glad you both also enjoyed. In case you ever want to go somewhere a little more chill/relaxing, you can also visit Olon, which is a little north of Montanita. You'll feel the contrast immediately. Another popular beach to visit is Salinas, which is a little further south. Right now in August is a good time to go whale watching from the coast of Salinas. Whales from the north and the south meet up in the middle (Ecuador's coastline) for mating season. If you ever visit Salinas, you should easily find any kind of boat agency that will give you a ride to go whale watching. Warning, this may tend to be a tourist trap, but it's worth it.

I wonder if the people that "don't like" Montanita are older people. I would love to stroll through there one night and people watch, but I could probably be the dad of 90% of the people I saw in your video. So, living in that town is probably a young person's thing. I haven't been "out" past 1am in 20 years lol. That is DEFINITELY for the young people.
@EricandSarah
@EricandSarah 3 жыл бұрын
I think if we had stayed in the middle of town, we wouldn’t have liked it as much. It is a very loud place with lots of people passing through just to party their faces off. Nothing wrong with that, but it invites a certain negative mentality that isn’t necessarily mindful of the town or environment. To actually live in the area, we would choose Olon, Ballenita, or even Manglaralto. Still nearby, but a lot less busy - mas tranquilo, as they would say. Thanks for watching!!

I'm contemplating on going to Montanita for my bday next month. Better yet, it falls on a Saturday. However, I have no idea what the rules and restrictions are, such as mask mandates in clubs and bars, social distancing, etc. Also, the nightlife in this particular video didn't seem THAT crowded, other than what ya'll showed on the beach at 3 am. Any tips? Should I still head there, seeing as almost every Latin American country currently has strict curfew hours, limited nightlife...?
@EricandSarah
@EricandSarah 3 жыл бұрын
We will say that Montanita is generally very relaxed when it comes to restrictions - so far no restrictions right now in Montanita (or any being followed), but you should always follow the rules of where you are going. Or at the very least, do as the locals do. Hope this helps - Montanita is a very fun place!

@EricandSarah
@EricandSarah 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, if you want to specifically go to Montañita, you can fly to Guayaquil (or Manta with a transfer). You can bus or private transport. Buses are about $1/hr of bus ride. Taxis are more expensive. There are lots of ATMs in Montañita, but smaller towns around don’t always have ATMs so best to come with some cash!

I noticed your drinks had ice in them. Do you ask if the ice is from purified water, or is it ok in most places? Just curious. Loved the video!
@EricandSarah
@EricandSarah 3 жыл бұрын
We don’t ask because we find purified water to be readily available so we just assume they’re using it (at least where we’ve been). Most locals drink purified water too so they’re usually conscious about it. We haven’t had any issues so far :)

what about the comparison between sayulita and montanita? what are your thoughts?
@EricandSarah
@EricandSarah Жыл бұрын
Excellent question! Glad you found both those videos haha we find them quite different actually! Montanita is full party and very lively until the sun comes up. Sayulita is a little more laid back and trendy. There is still a lot of nightlife there but it’s not as widespread as in montanita. We also found Montanita more busy than Sayulita (even though S has gotten more busy as the years go on). Definitely worth checking out both, but if we had to choose, we like Sayulita better. I would be more inclined to say Ayampe Ecuador is a more accurate comparison to Sayulita based on trends, surf, and young people.
@donnaszemesi4200
@donnaszemesi4200 Жыл бұрын
