Threw a Freeway 5-Way/10 Position Switch in my Nashville Tele. Get the traditional parallel Neck and Bridge combo plus Series combos across all three pickups and all the standard Nashville combos. Ends up being able to make just about every guitar sound you could ever want.

Nice clean/clear video, Steve! No messing around and you make it very easy to hear the different sounds. Especially like the fact that you don't use distortion - who needs it!!! Brill! Thanks 🙂

great idea. I built one in 1981 with a reversed tele bridge pick-up and wired as per Strat. an 1980 also built a tele with Strat trem and mini Gibson hum bucker in neck pos. Still can't decide which one I prefer!!

Hey y'all - My MIM Tele Deluxe had the 3rd pickup but regular Stat style 5 way switch. I studied the Nashville mod and stumbled on a wonderful mod that gets you to Nashville Tele AND "FAT NASH" mode were the 3 dual pickup settings are in series - VERY nice and NASTY. You do not get all 3 pickups in this mod but I think bridge/neck in series is better than all 3. Requires a DPDT or S-1 and a Super Switch. Easy peasy. Just finished it yesterday. Wow! Also note the middle pickup wind and polarity matter for humbucking modes. Lindy Fralin makes some nice custom winds for Nash mod - check out their P90 single coil clones. Tones galore and they can ensure your 3 pickups are "in phase"

Great demonstration- I’m a beginner guitar student on the fence about the added pick up, the neck on the Nashville tele is what’s pushing me to buy more than the sound Rolled edges, radius, satin finish

As a non-expert I honestly didn't know enough about the differences with the pickups to have that be an issue. The neck was specifically why I bought mine. It just felt better than other Teles I tried out at the store. After bringing it home and spending even more time with it I'm mostly happy with it - mostly.

Nice! I was gonna add a portion about the different wiring options but it got a little complicated so I just left it out. Definitely some interesting ways to wire it in, another common one is the switch with a separate volume for the middle pickup as well so you can blend it in. Glad you like yours, honestly can’t see a reason not to make all teles this way!

As a sound engineer, I just wanted to point out that when you said strat pickups are not actually wired out of phase, the correct word, for that would be polarity. “Strat pickups are not actually wired out of polarity.” The pickups themselves are indeed out of phase. As the string vibrates up and down the neck, a different part of the waveform is at each pickup. So technically, they are out of phase. This is not simply a semantic, argument, phase and polarity mean to different however, related things phase has a frequency component and polarity does not when you wear a guitar with two pick ups that are out of polarity they are also out of phase because they cannot be in the same physical space When you wire them in polarity, they are still out of phase because they cannot be in the same physical space. The separation in time position of the way form and it would really be considered phase shift in a guitar since time hasn’t been shifted only the phase of the form at the individual pick up but now we are picking nits. We can look at any wideband sound signal put it through a delay add it back with itself dry at an equal amount in represent to pick ups that are underneath the string that have the same frequency response and power and you will hear phase cancellation when you put just the tiniest bit of delay on, less than a millisecond. It creates filtering. What makes a guitar more complicated is that the frequency response for each of those signals is not exactly the same even though the source is so you would want to equalize the dry signal and the delayed signal separately, and then mix them together to get more of what the guitar is doing.

As an electrical engineer with lots of sound engineering interest and experience, I'm here to say you hassling this guy over 'polarity' vs 'phase' is a semantics issue and nothing more. Clearly by thesis-level length of your comment you clearly don't get enough love in your day job and for that I'm sorry but don't take it out on people especially when they post free videos and aren't seeking your nitpickery.

One of the hinges I like about a tele, is the space for your picking hand. I would rather use an EQ pedal or treble boost.

This sounds very interesting. Already imagining my blonde/maple standard Tele with a third pickup. Not looking for a more 'Strat-like' Tele though. What about another Tele bridge pickup in the middle? Seriously. Maybe with series/parallel option for the bridge and middle combined, and a 5-position switch.

I really like your video. I hope you don't mind if I share my Nashville story. I've always loved and wanted a Nashville Tele, but when I went looking for real, I became a little overwhelmed with some of the options. They all looked good but nothing really excited me. The Fender Player version was coming with noiseless pickups at the time, so that was out for obvious reasons and other builders seemed to always have some weird take on it that did not appeal to me. Then I watched a video about the short-lived Fender "Brent Mason" signature Nashville Tele and was knocked over. But at 2,800 clams it was gonna come my way anytime soon. So I decided that I would build my own and do the wiring myself. I got all authentic Fender parts Mexican Tele body, a roasted Maple neck, For pickups I chose the Tim Shaw Fender Yosemite Tele pick ups and bought one reverse wound Yosemite middle strat pick up. These Shaw pickups have vintage build and sound which is my first choice. When I wired it I was inspired by the Brent Mason, but put my own spin on it. My middle p/u is independent and can be added to the Tele configuration or eliminated by virtue of it being a push-pull knob, or played by itself. The nice thing is that I can add the Strat and even if I turn it's independent volume all the way down, I still get some of the humbucking effect of two p/u's (I don't know why, but I'm not complaining). Even with premium Fender parts all around, I was only in for a total of under 700 for the build. Oh and it's a Black on Black scheme with the dark roasted neck and looks completely awesome. I wouldn't brag, but everyone who has seen it agrees. I'm still up for more mods. Maybe there is a humbucker or hotter pups in the future or a change up in the wiring and switching. I'll go with the flow and see where it takes me. For anyone dreaming about a Nashville but are put off by cost or playability. I researched and if I had gone bare bones (ebay body and neck and GFS pups) i could have a finished guitar for under 325. Give it a try, these guitars are a tonal blast!

I got the player plus tele first, it's not a bad guitar at all.. but about a year later I got the brent mason signature telecaster and 🤯 it's straight 🔥! I absolutely love it. And the b bender is just icing on the cake. Truly a badass guitar..heavy as hell tho that's the only con I associate with it.

I rocked mine with ACDC songs thru a 100 WATT JCM 100 and could not tell the difference between that and Gibson with dual humbuckers. I'm sure there is if I did a side by side comparison but you wouldn't know it with out that. I like mine. I need to put compensated saddles on it but I'm just playing locally and not to worried about a slight intonation issue that is barely noticeable to a trained ear.

I thought what you did with the selector was the strat setup: N, NM, M, MB and B. I thought the Nashville's "M" position is actually NB so you can't just have the middle pickup like a Strat. You have a 5 way Strat switch, and the push/pull gives you the Nashville #3 spot of NB. Interesting but I thought it came like that. I am adding a 3rd mid pickup to my Tele and I am debating between the Strat setup or the Nashville setup. Nice to know I have push/pull option. Of the two 5 ways though, which do you prefer?

Hi Steve. Is the standard 6 saddle bridge on the Tele Nashville interchangeable with the 3 saddle bridge that you have on your Nashville.
@stevetharms
@stevetharms 7 ай бұрын
Yes they are…sortof…different models have different bridge plates and the screw holes (to screw the plate to the actual body) don’t always line up (if I remember right without looking through pictures some of the American models are attached in different spots than the Mexican versions.) So I would just see where your screw attachments are and make sure the replacement saddle/bridge plate will line up) Also on some of them where the holes are drilled through the body for the strings to run through are in different places. Basically whichever version you have, there will be a matching bridge of the opposite style (individual saddle vs 3 saddle) just make sure the holes of the replacement you’re getting match the one you’re replacing I know that’s a lot of words lol hopefully it kinda makes sense

Hi Steve, I have been wanting to buy a Nashville for a long time, and your video was really, really helpful to better understand its nuances better, particularly the way you explained the reasoning behind it and your demos of each configuration. I do have a question for you if you have the time: would you say that middle Stratocaster pickup sounds just like it does on a Strat? Otherwise put, if I play the Nashville in the 3rd position, for practical purposes do you feel it is the same as a Stratocaster in the 3rd position? Great job, and thank you for sharing your experience with us.
@stevetharms
@stevetharms Жыл бұрын
Hey Fernando, first of all, thanks for the feedback! I would say that in a blind comparison there won’t be any noticeable difference between the two. Your biggest difference in tone would probably be a result of the bridge and not the pickup itself. If you have a fixed bridge on a strat (not floating with the tremolo but tightened back against the body) it’s going to sound more or less identical in the 3rd position. Hope that helps!
