It all started with the young folk in Harlem - they called it the Lindy Hop - variations just changed as did the music.

ECS is seen as a simpler, cleaner version of Lindy Hop, but the East Coast basic's side-to-side action looks and feels anathema to lindy hop. Do you know where the East Coast basic comes from? Is it supposed to be rooted in something from lindy hop? If so, what? I know lindy hop also has a rock step and 2 triple-steps, but besides that?

- @@BallroomFeed - Thanks. The movement there looks/feels right to me - and from that I see how the ECS basic is a simplification of those moves - more basic, so probably better for absolute beginners. I'll try to keep my eye (and mind) open to the basic as being good in itself, but perhaps you can answer: Besides absolute beginners ingraining the rhythm, do people actually dance the East Coast basic where they rock away from each other and then side-to-side facing each other (without rotating or any other kind of travelling) ? Thanks

Is there any actual difference between Carolina, Collegiate, and St. Louis shag?
@ImAnEmergency
@ImAnEmergency Жыл бұрын
All are vastly different. Carolina shag is the least connected to swing jazz. Collegiate can be done to much faster tempos and St. Louis is far less common.

Carolina Shag is all about fluid footwork - almost like multi-directional moonwalking / gliding. Collegiate Shag your feet barely touch the ground - see 'reverse kicks' / basic, flea hop... St Louis Shag - I need a refresher to say what it is like, but I'm pretty sure it was not like either of the above.

A sincere question: Why would anyone prefer either Jive or East Coast Swing to Lindy Hop or Boogie Woogie? I probably have blinders on. I'm trying to grow my appreciation for Jive and East Coast Swing. Are there people who have had exposure to Lindy Hop or Boogie Woogie but prefer Jive or East Coast? If so, why?
@BallroomFeed

Of course! Each dance works with different styles of music and most people connect first to the style of music they prefer. Also jive and east coast swing are more straight forward and easier to learn for beginners.

Why do some people say ECS's rhythm is rock-step triple-step triple-step, while other people say it's triple-step triple-step rock-step?
@BallroomFeed

It's interchangeable. Some people start on the rock step and some people start on the triple step. There are two timings in the east coast swing music that work well so either way is correct.

I first learned Swing from a ballroom teacher. Then went to to New York City, where they did an authentic style of Lindy Hop. they said what the heck are you doing? We go to front to back. Most Swing Dance will incorporate Charleston into their swing. Lindy Swing is much more smooth than jive. The best explanation I heard was American. G.I.’s took the Swing Dance to Europe in World War II and because they were not very good. They had a jerky style of dance and that gave birth to jive.
