I'll show you some of the different sizes of lambs that we have on our farm and explain when a sheep is called a lamb and when it is called a sheep.

In Spanish we don't have two separate words for these, so I always just used the word interchangeably. I'm glad I finally know the difference
@jacquelinezavala26473 жыл бұрын
Yes there are two separate words in Spanish, cordero (lamb) vs oveja (sheep).

Hi, thank you for sharing with us the difference , it truly gives a good classification. Can you please also let us know the difference between and goat and a sheep? From a consumption perspective which meat is 'tougher' , I understand the way we process cattle, we get tougher meat when we don't process it humanely or if the cattle is in stress. but overall if they are processed humanely, which is tougher than the other. Thank you.
@familyfarmlivestock49493 жыл бұрын
From what we have eaten, sheep and goat are very similar. The difference is in the age of the animal, older is tougher but will have more flavor. Younger is more tender, more mild in flavor and usually more expensive per pound than meat from an older animal. This is the same for both sheep and goats. Sheep and goats put on fat differently, so if you like a juicier meat, go with lamb. Thanks for watching!
At 0:01 - 0:10, my answer to her question was simple, a lamb is simply a young sheep not grown up yet. But I do realize that the rest of the video still explores how there's more details to it than just that. Interesting video

"kids" are goats. I hope and pray I'm a lamb and feel like I'm turning into a sheep. 😁🙏 Starting to understand The Bible more. This video helps me to as well.

As a dog enthusiast I must ask what kind of dog do you use to guard/herd your lamb. Is it an old English sheepdog? Or border collie? Maybe the great pyrenees
@familyfarmlivestock49492 жыл бұрын
We do not use a guardian dog right now, as long as we use the electric netting the predators seem to stay out. If that changes, we'll look into getting one or two, something similar to the great Pyrenees

Do they become sheep at one years old or at two or some where In-between?
@familyfarmlivestock49492 жыл бұрын
Lambs are called sheep when they are one year old. You can tell by looking at their teeth, they get adult teeth to replace baby teeth just like people do. When the first 2 adult teeth are in they are sheep, this happens at one year of age.

Mutton we generically we say it.. but does it refers to sheep meat or Goat?
@familyfarmlivestock49493 жыл бұрын
Hey Vj j! Mutton is the word for meat from sheep older than one year of age. Goat meat is called chevon, but most folks just say goat. Or cabrito if they mean younger goats around 6 months old. Thanks for watching!

I visited a sheep farm yesterday, which occasioned my coming across this video. The farmer with whom I spoke markets the meat. What he told me is that he doesn't market sheep meat (mutton) but only lamb meat. According to his standard, the difference between sheep and lamb is puberty. When they slaughter the Lambs, at about 8 months, there's a double joint in the hoof. Once the animal has been slaughtered, that area is broken (called "breaking lamb"). If that double joint has calcified, that is a sign that the lamb transitioned to a sheep, and cannot be considered, from a culinary standpoint, as lamb. Could you speak to that?
@familyfarmlivestock4949 Жыл бұрын
In our area, age is determined by teeth that come in at around 12 months, maybe more for the sake of buyers vs folks that raise and market their own meat (since teeth are easy to see on the live animal). I see what the farmer you spoke with was talking about (as far as puberty being before a year old), that's just different than how lambs vs sheep are determined around here.

Lambs are ladies & rams are dudes?🤔
@familyfarmlivestock49493 жыл бұрын
Sometimes lambs are ladies (sometimes not), but rams are always dudes! Lambs are sheep under a year old regardless of gender. The word "lamb" refers only to age. A ewe lamb is a female lamb and a ram lamb is a male lamb. Most farmers would just say lambs and refer to all young lambs as a group. Once the lambs are more than a year old they are all sheep, called ewes for females and rams for males. Thanks for watching!
