@shady4tv7 жыл бұрын
if they told you that how would anti malware companies make their money? ;) but honestly, it's mostly by looking at the hash of every scanned file and comparing it to a large database of known malicious hashes. They also look for "bad behaviors" in programs such as trying to hide themselves or writing to system folders. if you spend a little bit of time watching how different malware executes you can see a lot of similarities (such as changing permissions and hiding under deep paths in AppData). AntiMalware programs try to use "behavioral analysis" to set guidelines for programs so they don't try anything considered "Malicious".

There was All Hail Hypnotoad "virus" back in 2008 that some University students created to test out hermetic type scans. They came up with idea to confuse anti virus program that it has scanned all files when it scanned that specific file and anti virus program reported whole computer was scanned and no threats found. It was so ground breaking that none of the anti virus programs were safe from it and gave anti virus programs all research data and method of "attack". Just reminding you that if you have a ton of a files and full scan is ready way too fast, you probably might be infected with this kind virus.

The point is that once upon a time, pretty much the only conceived cybernetic attack involved having a piece of code attach to some file and then spread to more files, making it comparable to a biological virus. Over time, more types of attacks were developed but people still called them "viruses", even though the term was inadequate. "Malware" is a general term used to describe malicious programs and the technical term used for the former mentioned type of attack is, very descriptively, "File Infector". We avoid the term "virus" even for such attacks, since this term has pretty much lost its meaning over the years and doesn't really mean anything right now. This was coming from someone working in security :)

It's actually not the same idea for Flu and "cold viruses" (mostly Rhinoviridae), because Flu (Influenza) has a segmented genome, which allows for recombinant forms containing fragments of two or more strains which evade existing immune response much more efficiently than simple mutant forms like the case for non-segmented genome viruses.

Malware stands for Malicious Software. Viruses ARE malware, but only one portion under a large umbrella. So if you got infected with a virus, your computer has a malware infection. So there is nothing wrong with people using the terms interchangeably, as viruses are programs…

I don't think this video really high lights the differences between Viruses and Malware. Malware seems to get a brief passing mention while the majority of the air time goes to virus. The I love you worm seems to be more prominent as well. A suggestion for a TechQuickie, or a LTT: A basic break down of malware in general. You can talk about malware being the umbrella term ("mal"icious soft"ware"), examples of virus, worms, adware, spyware, and historically significant examples. Depending on how much you wanted to put into it, it could easily become a series, but just a suggestion.

Just saw a comment about how "Macs can't get viruses" but they totally can, having worked at a store called Experimac for half a year, we've done virus removals for plenty of Mac computers, but the 2 main differences we saw were these: 1. Mac malware is generally installed BY the user, and without being tricked into typing in their password, they would not have a virus in the first place, technically making this a "User Error." Also, it should go without saying that any virus that affects windows can't affect a Mac, since they're completely different. 2. By using a technology Apple calls System Integrity Protection (SIP) or "Rootless," the actual OS (based on UNIX, which is already a huge plus for security) is untouched by (almost) ANYTHING the user does, leaving it virtually impossible to get a permanent virus, which can easily be cleaned up by MalwareBytes, (the only malware remover we use on macOS, which is also free) so the security is very much a benefit. Also, you can reinstall macOS without affecting any user files, so that also helps if something WERE to get past SIP. That said, there ARE EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE. MACS CAN AND WILL BE EXPLOITED AND ARE NOT INVINCIBLE BY ANY MEANS. I'm just wanting to inform, and hopefully create a discussion. Have a great day, everyone! Edit: I should probably state for the record that I use a gaming PC with Windows for most uses, but also own a MacBook. I don't have a "side" in this, each computer type has its own pros and cons

It was very annoying as I was young enough that I didn't understand what the problem was; re-installing my system and the game a few times before I figured out it was the game causing the problem... I don't know if it was the game's software causing conflict in my system or if it had been corrupted with some kind of virus, but it drove me nuts for days.

From the perspective of certain ideologically radical FOSS advocates, there is no discrepancy between the set of all tools that fall under the "virus" designation and that whose members fall under both the "virus" and the "malware" designations. "Malware" implies a loss of functionality, and from the FOSS perspective all nonfree software and tools are stripping the functionality of the computer away from the user by failing to allow the user complete control of the machine. Exploits in existing software are likewise malware when taken advantage of because the intended functionality of the machine is castrated from the user. As no "viruses" can be truthfully said to exist which do not take advantage of exploits and/or nonfree software, no computer virus exists which, from such a perspective, cannot be said to be "malware" as well.

@UltraBagel7 жыл бұрын
That's why we have VPNs my dude
@MLWJ19937 жыл бұрын
UltraBagel and how would your VPN distinguish malicious code from legitimate code if it was send to you via an exploit? It can't, the only thing a VPN does is encrypt your network traffic (in most cases no one can decrypt that traffic thus keeping you safe from other people trying to steal it or companies watching your online activities). A VPN is in no way used to keep malicious programs at bay!!!
@UltraBagel7 жыл бұрын
Shit okay
@MLWJ19937 жыл бұрын
UltraBagel It's k, you're pretty unlikely to get infected that way in your private environment, exploits like that are mostly used to attack a network from big companies and most of those are already patched with latest security updates anyway, but just in case I would recommend some form of anti-virus software to anyone as well as the occasion where someone lowers their guard and clicks a wrong link in a drunk mood (it happens). Of course common sense will help you in the long run as well so you're not entirely wrong on that.

@monkeywithocd7 жыл бұрын
I don't know how many people will agree with me on this, but I am *strongly* against "always on", as I call it, anti-malware software. Personally, I just use Malwarebyte's free anti-malware and just occasionally do a scan because I've used Norton, Kaspersky, and AVG and not one of them have done any good when I actually got malware on my computer, or the computer of anyone I know, so they were just sitting in the background being resource hogs for nothing. Also, being careful about what you download in the first place is the best form of anti-malware there is. I honestly can't remember the last time I got some malware without knowing exactly what I got it from, because it is pretty obvious when a website is sketchy or if you breezed through one of those installation wizards for free software without completely reading each page. If you're doing something where you need to download from a sketchy website, be sure to scan it (my suggestion is with Malwarebyte's anti-malware) before you run it, since the file won't do anything until you run or open it which is the nature of malware. Oh, and sometimes these sketchy things will give you false positives (like when cracking the DRM on games you legally bought), so if you want to be thorough you can use VirusTotal which uses a bunch of different programs so you can decide from that whether you want to trust the file or not.
