Only regret is not joining sooner or had the experience to serve enlisted time. Advice to all, If your heart is set for joining, just do it. I went with my younger brother to go see his recruiter shortly after I got out of active duty Army, his recruiter gave him a list of jobs he qualified for because of asvab scores, I asked my brother to step out real quick so i can speak with the recruiter: "Look sergeant I'm not trying to undermine you or anything but all these jobs are bullshit, Petroleum supply specialist? C'mon man that job sucks no matter how you slice it." And he was honest with me telling he knows that most thse jobs sucked but my brother needs to improve his asvab score if he wants a "better" job but more importantly he's a high school kid and like so many high school kids they don't really understand the weight of what an MOS is and asked me to speak with my brother in earnest on what he really wants since my brother was unsure on a lot of things but had me there to at least be real with him on it what the army is and isn't. My brother now serves as a 25B in the WI national guard, $20k bonus and is 1 semester away from graduating with a degree in IT.

Team Swartz I have a question long story short I’m embarrassed to say this but back in 2013 I enlisted in the army for active duty it wasn’t long before I made the decision lightly and I say lightly to get out my Battlion commander at the time even told me thing about my decision very carefully however at The time I was young immature and stubborn man . I was ELS and was chaptered out as a 5-17 JFK or JVK . I basically said a bunch of shit that wasn’t true just to get out and with the process of trying to get back in went to see a clinical phycologist to to get the letter saying what was put down on my DD214 was never true to begin with meaning I don’t have adjustment disorder or signs of depression or anxiety and have never had a history of it going back to my childhood . My main question is I already went to the active recruiter they shut me down real quick and am now trying to get back in the army but into the national guard I realize what I have done but a lot has changed during the time I was discharged till no I have a wife a son I’m not the same person I was when I was 21 . I was just wondering if there is even a chance for me to get back in even if it’s only for a few years in the National Guard ? I appreciated you taking the time read this and responded when you can I’m not proud of what I did but I know I have what it takes just asking for a second chance .

Daniel Scott I hear ya buddy and happens more times then it should. Best case you can make is under go professional mental health evaluation. I recommend 1-2x monthly for a year or so. Tell them exactly what you said and at the end of that year or more of counseling, gather all the notes from the mental health professional and gain a memorandum based on their assessment that you don’t in fact have x, y, z... and that based on their opinion you’re mentally sound for military stress and duties. Only then would a recruiter or branch of service take your request seriously. Without doing so, they’d be like, “Hard pass.” With the 1+ year of counseling gives you a leg to stand on and more substance other than the statement, “I was young n dumb.” Get it? Otherwise, it really is a waste of time for a Recruiter. Also, when you do so ask for a Recruiter really good with waivers. They’ll better assist you than a new recruiter or Recruiter that doesn’t like to do waivers. Understand it’s going to be a long process but if you’re down for the cause, GO FOR IT! I’m rooting for you! Stay blessed and thank you for watching! I’m sorry it took me a month to see this comment and respond. 🙏🏼🇺🇸

Air National Guard for almost 26 years. Enlisted as an E1 in 1995, crossed over and commissioned as an O1 (when I was an E5) in 2008 and today, deployed as an O5. Im a military technician (full time, federal civilian worker wearing the military uniform) GS 12 step 4 currently. As a kid coming from the Magnolia Projects in uptown New Orleans, single parent household (mother), I've been to many deployments, TDYs and activations including Afghanistan and Iraq. I have my Associates, Bachelors, and two Masters degrees through the Air Guard. I'm not bragging, just telling how a lowly ghetto kid's trials and tribulations turned out for good not just for me, but for my family as well. I was considering active duty, but I realized I have very important people here at home that I can't leave for a long time and I want to be with them. But at the same time, I still want to serve my country. I was considering reserves, but I don't like how little they can be calked out compared to National Guard. I still want to be here at home, but I still want to be involved in something that can be a little time consuming. So if that means I have to be called out to help, I have no problems. I'm in Arizona, so it's a pretty big state with a pretty big Guard, so I know there'll be times where I'll be called out for AZ emergencies. Especially in our summer months, we're one of the states that have wildfires annually, so there's always a time to be called out here. I still want to serve my country in some way while still putting in time, but also want to be here at home to he with the people I care most. So after these last 6 months of high school, I'll be planning on being apart of the Guard.

I finally found someone who sees it like i do, im a volunteer firefighter, im 21 and have been pursuing a career in firefighting since before i was 18. In indiana you have to 21 for any department that meets the govt. requirement for 20 year retirement in the fire service. And actually am applying to another department at the end of next year that i intend on applying to come hell or high water and still being a volunteer firefighter in my fathers last couple years in the fire service which i dont want to miss (hes told me his end of service is coming soon because he cant physically or mentally handle it anymore) but i still want to serve my country and recently learning that i can go stateside come natural disaster and use not only military training but the education i have in the fire service, its lit a fire inside me. And not only that i have more guard buddies who catch deployments than i do reserve buddies eho catch deployments which if im going to sign my life away for i want to be completely involved in. Im glad i finally found someone who sees it like i see it because most arent like us, i still want to see my family, i still want to see my fire brothers and sisters, but on the same hand i want to serve my country also. A firefighter cant fight his fight if a service member doesnt, but i want to be fighting with both fist, i want to be protecting against all threats foreign and domestic while taking care of the sick and protecting against chaos in my home community and most just dont get that, but thats why i believe the gaurd is superior

You know it’s kinda funny. I joined the reserves yet I still get the Wisconsin GI Bill. I joined as a split op and went to my unit the first weekend I could so I got active pay status, hell they even auto promoted me to Pv2 for taking initiative and finally I’m doing ROTC so I’m going to get non-deplorable status not to mention I got my MOS I wanted (36B) and my unit is literally 30 mins from my college. Compared to my buddy who did national guard who gets the same benefits and has to drill out of Madison I’d say I’m better off. I’m glad I joined the reserves and I don’t regret a thing. My biggest recommendation is as SSG Swartz says DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH!! Thanks for putting this video together. :)
@TEAMSWARTZ4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Baxter My pleasure and thank you for watching! Congratulations on joining the Reserve and going ROTC. I’m not sure what the Wisconsin GI Bill is bit of you’re saying it’s the 1606 Select Reserve GI Bill, we all receive that with the 6+ year enlistment. You’ll also receive the FTA up to $4k and that’s it unless you qualify for regular financial aid. As for STA, that’s only reserved for the Guard only because of our responsibility to the State Mission. Just so you understand, until you’re in your Junior & Senior year of college, you won’t be non-deployable. You’re only non-deployable once you sign your SMP Contract in your Junior year. You’re smart to go to your unit to be in active drilling status and it sounds like they gave you the waiver to e2. They should have waited until after you got to e3 and then used that one time waiver to e4. 36B is a great MOS and glad everything worked out for you. Stay blessed and make us proud!
@TEAMSWARTZ4 жыл бұрын
Marcus Sealy By Army Regulation, the unit commander can ONLY waive a rank advancement from e1-e4. That’s not a myth. If the unit does a second one, it’s illegal. Why a unit would give you the waiver from e1-e2 was cool to get you excited, but it hurts you in the long run because if you advance to e3 in a year or less... you have to wait until you reach 24mo’s of service and 12mo’s in grade before you can be advanced to e4. So they should have used the waiver after you we’re advanced to e3. But you would know more than me. Either way, I’m happy for you and your decision.

@TEAMSWARTZ4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joey E. First, thank you for watching my videos. You posted a comment that I'm assuming you deleted because I cannot locate that comment when clicking on your reply in my notifications. You said, " The pattern on your rank bothers me. If I was still in, I wouldn't know how to address you unless I looked like a moron staring for a while. Besides the recruiting patch, obviously. That can be any NCO though." I am sure with your military experience you wouldn't have looked like a moron and would have addressed me properly. Thank God I introduced myself on video so you wouldn't be confused but if we had met in person, I am not egotistical. I hear you on that comment because I am red/green color blind and struggle to see officer ranks. To correct you based on my recruiting patch as you stated, some states allow SPC Promotable to become a Recruiting and Retention NCO. I feel it should only be an NCO becoming a Recruiter for it is a lot of responsibility and if you don't adhere to the Army Values, it can be pretty easy to get mixed up into some trouble. Thank you again for watching and taking the time to comment below my video. I appreciate your support and stay blessed my friend.

Passed all of it and was easier then I thought it would be. I’m currently on week 6 of white face and I’ve got the anvil as soon as I get back. They also have the forge coming up the week after on week 7 or 8. They are also trying out a new thing for each platoon depending on the company that your in. My company is Delta and my platoon is currently set to be used as the weight lifting platoon. We didn’t get a 4th platoon. But, the first platoon is focused on stretching, second platoon is the snack platoon that gets snacks in between breakfast lunch and diner and mine was weights. For the ladies. I’d recommend working on abs quite a bit. Most of the ladies are having a hard time doing leg tucks. I practiced doing inclined sit ups with a plate on top. each individual can increase weight depending on their own endurance. Use the acft video. It really does help! Best of luck to everyone and props to this channel. It really is helping me get through basic.

Hope the following insight helps anyone. I enlisted into the National Guard last week as an O9S (Officer Candidate). The reason I chose the national guard because I feel the guard is more family/career oriented. I work in my field of study and currently attending grad school. Also, I would rather stay within my state (SC) to supplement my civilian life as I feel it’s more flexible. As someone who wants to serve the country but also loves their civilian career, the National Guard is more appealing. Moreover, I have no interests I going full-time/active duty, obviously unless deployed. Go Guard! South Carolina!! #teamswartz

I joined the reserves 8 years ago. It wasn't until after joining that I wished I joined the National Guard. I remember the NG coming to my High School and having a BMX... What a waste of money. It didn't give me any information on what the Guard was. I wish there would have been videos like this when I was joining the military. This is the most informative video that I think anyone looking into either the Reserve or Guard should watch.

My husbands is in the National Guard. He's required to deploy every 4 years, but his unit asks for volunteers every 2 years with the typical deployment lasting 6 months long. He likes to deploy. Your video makes it sound like people usually try to avoid it, but sometimes deployments are fun and pay better than staying home.
@TEAMSWARTZ4 жыл бұрын
I know plenty that go often voluntarily and love deployments. It’s the fear of the unknown for most honestly and MOS of course. Once deployed and they see it’s not that bad, they volunteer more. Weird but it happens. Some have aggressive goals and that don’t want anything to detract them from it. Thank you for watching and stay blessed! 🙏🏼🇺🇸

Team Swartz thank you Sgt! Last year, I met with both National Guard and Reserves recruiters to see what both branches offer. I chose the National Guard over the reserves is because first it offers more benefits and second I want to stay home in my state and focus on my college career first so that I don’t have to worry about it in the future. After I get my degrees and finish my education, I would love to take my military career to the next level like getting deployed or go on missions. I signed a 6 years contract as 11B and I’m planning to stay in the Guard for as long as possible.

I have chosen National Guard because when I was living in New York for the time being I enlisted with the New York Guard which fell under to assist the Air and Army National Guard. But the New York Guard was the Army Divison. Although I served with the Guard but that was only just to assist with New York state only. I decided that I wanted to try something new and do state and federal missions as well. I can't wait to continue my military career with the Army National Guard. I like to look for new adventure training volunteering and giving back those are my new reasons on why I chose and decided to join the National Guard. I also had a few meetings with recruiters like you did but finally made the decision to join the Army National Guard I filled out an application and did exceptionally well for the very first time since taking the asvab in years. I'm currently now waiting to go to MEPS in two weeks my feelings are mixed excited and nervous about beginning this new opportunity that awaits me. My recruiter was awesome he explained everything I needed to know but was shocked on the info I knew and the questions I asked.

Hey Sfc Swartz, I love your videos. My son is joining the Army and you have provided some great incite for me. I have another son who is in the Air Guard. The one thing you did not touch on in this video is the difference in VA benefits for regular and Guard. Guard members get limited (if any) VA benefit, unless they do a federal deployment over 180 days. Most guard deployments are being cut off two weeks prior to that tine line.
@TEAMSWARTZ3 жыл бұрын
VA Benefits are for all service members and the VA Websites lists the requirements for each feature/benefit. I will cover VA Home Loan/Small Business Loans and Post 9-11 in the future! Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼 Glad I am able to help!

I’m 31 and looking at joining either the Army Reserves or NG. Got a 93 on my PiCAT (97 on the ASVAB pre-test). Trying to get as much info as I can before joining, but feeling a little rushed by the Army Recruiter. Although I got a really good job (25H) lined up with bonuses in CO (where I want to be, currently in AZ), but don’t want to jump into anything to quickly. Gotta remember it’s just another day on the job for them, and a big life choice for me. Basically I’m torn between doing cool stuff (91F, 68W, 31E, and/or going to reserve SF with the NG after choosing one of those jobs), and financial security (25 or even better 35 series). I made it this far in life doing what I love (teaching natural fitness, primal health, Jiu Jitsu, and next up firearms), so undecided. I do want to learn comms, and I guess 25H would help with that, and get me good pay. Thoughts from anyone who’s been there, done that?

I have several videos for you to checkout that may be helpful to your research. Sounds like you’re extremely ambitious and lots of goals. I like that. SF as it sounds like you’re aware is only Regular Army full time and Guard. Not in the Army Reserve. Do your research and don’t pull the trigger until you’re confident or as confident as you can in your decision. Have you sat down with your local Guard Recruiter to see what your options are in the local area. For it would make it easier to go SF later on with you already being within the Guard versus having to request a conditional release that may or may not be approved. Both are excellent options in their own right but peep these videos: DON’T JOIN THE ARMY UNTIL YOU WATCH THIS VIDEO FIRST: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moemimqqe7yGgqM WHAT JOBS DO I PREQUALOFY FOR AFTER I PASS THE ASVAB TEST: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXLcfn1umq6YqNk GUARD TO ACTIVE DUTY: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4iml6V_rbusfrM (same process going Reserve to Guard mid-contract) You’re getting up there in age and honestly I’m not sure if there’s an age limit for SF. I’d try a chat with a Guard SF specific Recruiter. Call 800-GoGuard and ask that hotline for a SF Recruiter to seek best advice for optimal opportunity. Good Luck in your decision making process! Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼

Great video! Just a heads up the Reserves also has a Miltech program very similar to the national guard FMS/MATES. Either option is a great way to get your foot into the door to federal employment. I started out as a miltech at an AMSA and now I work as a DA civilian for the active component in Germany. I'm obviously a little biased having spent 16 years in the reserve and its provided me with experiences, knowledge and leadership abilities I otherwise wouldn't have been able to get in the civilian world.

Thank you! Thank you! Please share anyone of my videos and help others with my info... It’s def on my list to do but they’re the same for the most part except at times, the Reserve will limit the amount to something less than $50k. I believe at the moment both Guard and Reserve is currently up to $50k in Federal Loans only. No private loans or credit cards and must be in your name. Other eligibility requirements will also apply.

Some states also have a State Guard. For example, the California State Guard also does the 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year thing, but it cannot be activated by the President. It can only be activated by the Governor, and they only serve within the state. They cannot be deployed overseas. However, their funding also comes 100% from the state, and it is a volunteer force, so they don't get paid for the 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. Some special units do get activated to help fight fires, but they do get paid for that.
@TEAMSWARTZ Жыл бұрын
You’re referencing the “State Guard,” which in my analogy is like the Auxiliary of the Army National Guard. Only when activated for State Missions will they get paid. Otherwise, drills and AT’s are done with no pay from what I’ve been told by a few that were on the COVID Mission. Thank you so very much for watching this video and I hope you stay blessed! 🇺🇸🙏🏼

SFC, great video overall. One thing that is not accurate in this video, however - when you receive your SLRP installments, they only do a maximum of $7,500/year. After the taxes are taken off the top, what they're paying is $5,400 per installment (at a rate of one installment per year for six years). If you do the math, $5,400 x 6 years comes out to a value of $32,400 plus whatever interest you don't accrue as a result. $7,500 (rate before taxes) x 6 years would only come out to $45,000 in the first place. According to my state's ESO (my source of this knowledge, as I am an ARNG Soldier with an SLRP contract), you would need to re-enlist in order to get the other $5,000 out of the $50,000 that you are entitled to. Assuming this last $5,000 is taxed at the same rate, the NGB would only pay the Department of Education another $3,240 on your behalf. Therefore, the actual value of an SLRP sits closer to $35,640 (and that's with a re-enlistment; not sure how long is required). I will say, however, that the 15% deal that you mentioned is what's actually in my contract. I enlisted in February of 2019 (before this video was posted) and didn't receive my first installment until September 2020 (I was a split op due to my civilian job plus COVID-19 had me sitting in Gold Phase of RSP longer than I normally would have, so it took me a while). My assumption is that something in the policy changed in that time and that somewhere in my enlistment contract I agreed to "subject to changes in policy" or some other line of that nature. But again, my source of this knowledge is my own experience with having a SLRP. V/r, SPC Wasserman

That’s interesting and I’m gonna have to look into that. Yes, I’m now aware of the 15% or $7.5k annual payment since creating this video. Thanks for sharing and your name looks familiar!
