1/16th note groove for me. If the kick was less busy, say you just have one kick leading into the one, so the a of 4, then I would call it an 1/8th note groove. To me it’s all about the feel. Having so many of the 1/16th notes marked out in the beat makes it feel like a busier 1/16th note groove, rather than a more laid back 1/8th note groove.

I think you right 8 on hihat and 16th on the bass drum!

I never thought of that. That's a great question, I always took it for granted it was the hi-hats. But if the bass drum is in 1/16 and the hats in 1/8, what then? Do you use the higher value or smaller? Or is it always the hats that dictate the groove? Thinking about it I think it's still the hats that dictates if it's a 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 note groove. But what do I know I'm a bassist and drummers so haha.

I think it's pulse. I had a mentor who would sometimes laugh and say, you've gotta feel it in 1/1 not 4/4. Kindov like how cut time is really 2/2 and quarters become 1/8th note feeling. 16th pulses like 4/4 with a shimmy and 8/8 feels double time. Last groove, imo, was very 16th in that the pulse was on quarter notes.

Also do you have recommendations for begginer double bass paddle for electric drum set?

mapex mars is pretty great, double chain and you can add weights too. the latch is a bit weird but after some fiddling you can make it work.

Yes! Use pedal as paddles will get you wet! Get a couple of DW 2000 and 2 pads ( feels so much better than a double pedal)

i noticed you hold your sticks at the end of the stick ..not in the middle area/ fulcrum? is there a reason for this? better control?
@Coastfog
@Coastfog 7 ай бұрын
You're on the right path. The further back your fulcrum is, the more power you can apply, especially with your back fingers, because of the shortened lever, but there is the trade off that you're not utilizing maximum rebound. Plus it can obviously more exhausting, but in my experience, once your muscles get used to it, you have better control, power, and cleaner doubles. Like with most things in drumming, there is no single right way to hold the stick, I for one permanently switch between different grips while I play, depending on where I want to strike at that very moment. You will find your very own technique learning from other drummers and practicing theirs. Em has a great catalog of tutorials, but if you want to dig even deeper into why your fulcrum can easily be very far back, you should check out Gordy Knudtsen's videos on stick control and double strokes. It was a game changer for me.
