What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? - REM (Guitar Cover)
I love REM’s thick wall-of-guitar sound on their Monster album, especially on this song.
I had a tricky time nailing the tone of Peter Buck’s guitar at first. I auditioned different guitars and pedals but finally got close with a Boss Blues Driver stacked with a ProCo Rat distortion. I also used a Boss TR-2 for the tremolo stabs.
But here’s my secret ingredient, thanks to the debut performance of my Fender Mustang ‘69 reissue, I finally nailed it by using the Mustang’s out of phase pickup mode.
Another tricky part I discovered is the tuning.
REM is known for their quirky sense of humor and I think they tuned their guitars above standard tuning as an Easter Egg. If you play along with standard 440 Hz tuning, you’ll be terribly out of key.
So, erm, what’s the frequency, Kenneth? It’s 447 Hz. 👍
(Most pedal tuners can only go up to 445 Hz so I used the Fender Tune iOS app in Pro Mode.)
Lastly, the solo is a backward guitar so to mimic the sound of a guitar recorded in reverse in real-time , I used my EHX Attack Decay pedal, a pedal that can simulate backward guitar by softening the attack and cutting the decay of your notes.
Amp sim used is a Strymon Iridium in Vox mode.
