It's Okay To Be Smart really cool video, although there was a misleading description of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, in which it isn't just than you can't measure both position and momentum due to the measuring devices, which tend to interact with the system. But because it's an actual property of quantum particles to have this uncertainty in their existence. Not because we don't know, but because it isn't knowable (hope that's a real word). Sorry to criticise, but this is a common misconception which shouldn't be spread any more!
@jonwyllie52386 жыл бұрын
This video has some issues... You are confusing observation (heisenbergs microscope) with actual uncertainty principle, which is a consequence of Fourier transforms. These are often confused. But it's important to point out that even if your microscope or observations didn't disturb the system, it would still have an uncertainty because of the nature of waves and Fourier analysis

What does absolute zero has to do with the collapse of the wave function? On the other hand, temperature affects velocity (i.e. momentum) and position, both underlie the uncertainty principle and because their product can't go below a certain value, temperature therefore can't go to absolute zero too.

How exactly does it relate to the anthropic principle? All I said was that it's cool that life (as we know it) can only survive a few hundred degrees above absolute zero, considering that temperature can reach into the trillions. I never said "It's such a miracle that the Earth is fine tuned to such a perfect temperate to allow life to exist". THAT is an anthropic statement, not what I originally said.

Unless I misunderstood something, 1:46 seems to be confusing the observer effect with heisenberg's uncertainty principle. According to the video, it is actually possible to have absolute zero, it's just not possible to verify it. The video afterwards is ambiguous enough to pass off as a simplified uncertainty principle, which is why I'm hesitant to say it's a mistake, but at 1:46 it definitely seems like a confusion. In other words, the act of observing things, with light or thermometers, would prevent verifying that an object is in absolute zero, but would not prevent an object from being in absolute zero without you verifying it. Heisenberg's uncertainty principle goes a step further and says that (also a gross simplification), the speed *cannot* be zero since tiny velocities (and tiny position wave functions for that matter) are inherently fuzzy, regardless of an observer. Sorry my simplification doesn't do justice either, but my point is that the video at least at one point seems to be using the observer effect instead of a more inherent truth, and this leads to the aforementioned problem (according to the observer effect, it is still possible for objects on any scale to be in absolute zero, it just wouldn't be possible to verify their states). When the reality is that they can't be absolute zero. Okay I'm confusing myself at this point, hope it makes sense to you!

Yes and no. When you measure temperature, you measure the temperature of something. So, if you are explicitly measuring the temperature of atoms, and no atoms are present, then you have a dilemma. Generally speaking, 'temperature' is simply a measure of the kinetic energy in a system. However, radiation has a 'temperature' too, as do neutrinos, so, I guess the answer to your question is, what are you measuring the temperature of? You can't measure the temperature of a dog that does not exist. However, when we bring quantum mechanics into the issue we discover that the question isn't even well-posed. You cannot have a space that is truly empty. Not in this universe.

I have been watching you since you had 50k subs, This is the first time I am disliking one of your video. Please don't do those meme breaks they are extremely annoying and I felt more like a jump scare since you increased their volumes too. Please don't.

Was "freaky physics" guy inspired by David S Pumpkins?? I mean, that has to be the inspiration for this character, right? The voice is just spot on 😂
