What's the LEAST popular Pokémon game?

There are many Pokémon games, split into 9 generations. But which generation is the most popular? And which one is the least popular? Well, to find out the answer I asked more than 3000 people to fill out a survey - and now, let's go through the results!

Back when it came out, everyone was being a huge baby about the handful of designs they didn't like and the lack of old pokemon before the post-game. It was only around the time of Gen 7 or 8 that people finally went "wait, Gen 5 might have been good actually?"

But back then the fanbase was dominated by the og fans of gen 1 and 2, where as now days the gen 4 and 5 fans have grown up and now become the much more dominate fans in the fanbase which is why you mostly hear about gen 4 and 5 nowadays. I have a feeling the exact same thing will happen for gens 7, 8 and 9 where in 10 to 15 years the active members in the fanbase will be those fans now grown up.

I'm sad how far gen 7 was :( I really love sun and moon. I haven't played all of the pokemon gens but it was definitely my favorite story-wise and character-wise. The designs were so nice and the cutscenes, in my opinion, were good! I enjoyed the story! But I get a lot of people don't really play pokemon for the story lol

Many things to say about Alolan region that are great things. I think certain things like story, not being able to skip cut scenes, and newer features may have made fans not like it. Including new region Pokemon or Z moves for the next gimmick. I think they should of added cut scene skip options probably for future replay value, however I didn't really hate tjis gen at all compared to sadly Sword and Sheild for a lot of things, but still liked what certain things were carried over like region variants and some open world, but still was not fond of the bland story or how models were lied about and over working get worse leading into the newest gen having the worst bugs. I hope to play the new game when a lot more bugs are fixed. Thanks for the nice polling video.

I mean each gen grouped like 5 games together so that kind of just evened out the rating in general. for example if he had categorized PLA separate from SWSH then that would have caused gen8's rating to drop to below 3.00. But no on the whole you are right.The only difference maker is what gen you have the most nostalgia for.

this is quite possibly one of the worst ways to interpret this data. hell, this is an awful way to interpret data in general. there are pretty enormous differences between the gens, this is a bad conclusion to make (standard deviation being low doesn't necessarily mean useless data, it can also mean each point matters a lot more) also 0.8/5 is 16% lmfao, that's not statistically negligible data. if you had a 16% error (in yield) when making a bomb you would kill everyone in the room

It’s amazing how people get so easily offended by Pokémon games. If you don’t hate the newer games with every cell in your body, you get attacked and called a “GameFreak bootlicker”. And if you give any amount of criticism to the newer games, you also get attacked. I feel like pokemon is one of those games you can't really rank without extreme bias as each game is so similar in the basics of each of them and the only difference is the gimmicks, which haven't really changed over most of the games until the most recent generations. It's likely just going to be "your favorite is the first one you played, or the one you first remember playing" and stuff like this makes it pretty obvious that's the case

That's not true at all. My first was gen 1. I loved playing it as a kid. It's absolutely not a well made game though, and isn't my favorite at all, but it is super nostalgic. My favorite gen overall is 3.

I do think lumping the games in by generation was a bit of a bad choice, since games within a generation were often so wildly different, and Arceus was just one prime example of that. Personally, I think the game is a amazing and resembles the direction I want to see future Pokemon games go in. I really wonder how much higher it might have ranked on its own. Kinda surprised gen 3 ranked so highly, though. I'd say the original two Hoenn games are probably my favorite Pokemon games, ever. I thought for sure gen 2 would take the lead, since nothing could ever beat them in terms of pure ambition.

I do agree, sword and shield are by far my least liked entries and in opposition Legends Arceus is easily one of my favs. Lumping in the main games with the remakes leads to some problems, like gen 4 would not be that high if HGSS were counted separately

You get a free Mega Lucario AND a mega Charizard/Blastoise/Venasaur so you can basically spam the A button all game and win even if you didn't even know how to play. Other games are very different. Gen 7 is much more difficult than Gen 6. I'd say even gen 8 is more difficult. Even kids don't like gen 6

Depends how old are the Pokémon fans? I’m a day one Pokémon person so obviously I have personal bias towards the older games but at the same time I can appreciate and accept when the newer games do things better and are better overall games. With that being said I feel like gen 4 has the perfect balance of all of that and it’s by far the best gen of games in my opinion (Gen 3 would be in the bottom 3 to me, I think even gen 8 is better).

And what's wrong with the opening cutscene and gimmick??? that opening has gotta be one of the best openings in pokemon and the gimmick is versatile and strong.

I'm gonna write my thoughts here about each place. 9th. 50/50 surprised. I liked Sword and Shield and I feel like they were amazing, I dislike BDSP and can never find myself playing it and Legends Arceus was phenomenal. Took a bit to get into but once I got past the tutorial I played the game non-stop. It did suck that it fell into bit of a routine and got grindy at points. 8th. I can see why Gen 9 is here, primarily because the glitches but it's overall a pretty good game. I've completed 2/3 stories so far and I'm in the process of fighting the Elite 4 but it's been pretty good. I am annoyed at the travel changes like gliding at a certain point just going down and how finnicky it can be for travelling whereas Legends Arceus perfected travel imo besides Sneasler because of how slow it was and Ursulana barely has an actual use. 7th. I've seen lots of Gen 7 hate but I liked it. I recently did what I've done with the Legends Arceus and Violet for Ultra Moon where I start from zero and just play the game until I beat it with my friend doing the same with Ultra Sun. Definitely liked the change in format for trials. I also like that USUM did improve on SM instead of doing the same thing just different protagonists. Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are both good and are what remakes should be in the future imo but I do feel like choosing an electric vs normal type made the choice really easy for me, also considering Eevee doesn't evolve which is like it's whole gimmick. 6th. Alright, I see Gen 1 here. I bought Gen 1 and a Gameboy Color right when the pandemic started and have played them. I find the designs iconic but the game just feels slow and it even randomly erased all my data right when I was at Mt. Moon. 5th. Gen 6 was eh for me. I can never find myself playing Y but I have gotten considerably far in Omega Ruby. This was the best spot for the anime in my opinion and was when the anime became kinda nostalgic for me. It's pretty unremarkable imo 4th. Gen 2 being here surprised me. I really don't like Gen 2 designs overall because to me they just feel like GameFreak tried to replicate the success of earlier designs but just couldn't quite figure out what gave it success. I do like the legendaries still and this game is on my to-play list for Silver. It is interesting seeing it be the first sequel and makes me wonder if they planned to make al the future games go in order instead of having stuff like certain games take place at the same time. From what I have seen though Gen 2 has great improvements so it is well deserved. 3rd. Gen 5 is amazing and I love it. It was what I grew up playing and really enjoyed it. I feel like the designs can feel a bit too similar to earlier ideas making it seem like the idea of scrapping all previous Pokemon in favor of making new designs wasn't really thought through (Patrat/Mincinno = Ratata, Munna = Jigglypuff, Pidove = Pidgey/Spearow, hell even the legendary trio is the same powers as the Legendary Birds) but overall it's a solid generation. The anime did well here too and was when I feel like it started to be better (I don't really like Gen 2-4 anime) 2nd. (Thomas put 2th lol) Gen 4 are solid games. The designs do feel the same way to me as Gen 2 did at points but it has my favorite legendary being Giratina. HGSS were good remakes and I had Soul SIlver. Can't really say much about it. 1st. Gen 3, not surprised. Gen 3 are amazing games and I enjoy them. Solid remakes, solid new entries. I feel like so many good designs are in this generation and it just works well. It's solid, that's all I have to say. Overall some surprised me but some didn't. Amazing video as ever!

I've only play gen 8 and 9 and i really liked them I personally liked gen 8 story, characters and world though pretty rough in some areas. I haven't finish Scarlet and Violet but so far i'm loving them and while i haven't encounter any of the insane glitches i have notice the performance and while it not bothering me that much i can see it bothering others luckily Nintendo have said they hear us and are working to fix these issues. I do hope Game Freak gets more time to work on their games in the future cause more time will definitely help them improve on what has come before and they are one of my personally favorite developers at Nintendo and i want them to succeed like others developers in Nintendo. This is probably going to get me hated by people but i don't care this is just my feelings and personal opinion.

I can't say much about the games as I only played gen1-4 still in Black and White rn, the hardest one to get into was Pokemon Platinum I don't really have a good explanation as to why, probably just because I played Pokemon HeartGold first and I loved it (my fav Pokemon game that I played, I had a lot of fun) For the games I just saw on yt (gen 8 and gen 9) gen 8 is meh, it exists, while gen 9 I liked probably because I can't experience the performance issues and bugs but I think it's better than gen 8's story and one can have more fun in that game than gen 8, which I had watching it (in a game I just look for the fun and plot twists it has, fun can help a gen go to awesome tho)

Gen 1 is on 80s hardware its just hard to get into it if you grew up with a advance DS or 3ds. I grew up with snes graphics and couldn´t get into nes/ amiga games ^^

My two favorite gens are still Gen 5 and Gen 4. I just love the story and region of the 5th gen and the peaceful vibe of the 4th gen. @@Breezeezee They are technically side games, but in reality they're just as important as the core games, especially when it comes to Pokedex completion that gen since it was the only way to get Ho-oh and Lugia, as well as the easiest way to get a lot of gen 2 mons. Can't compare that to Mystery Dungeon with no connectivity to the main games.

I know I'm disproportionately nostalgic with gen 1 being my first generation and I can understand why they wouldn't be to everyone's taste but the thought of people preferring gen 6 to gen 1 is mind blowing to me - so much railroading in gen 6, the world design and music for gen 1, never mind the sheer amount of stuff they fit in the game, was mindblowing for the technical limitations they were working with (compare it to other Game Boy games). The devs of Gen 1 get such unfair treatment because of the technical issue in the game but I don't think people realise what a technical accomplishment the games were in the first place.

Most of these zoomers haven't even played gen 1, at best some of them have played FR/LG and that's it. The bugs and glitches actually made the games better by helping the world feel larger than the limited power of the gameboy would let it otherwise.

It's likely due to people just playing the better versions instead, FireRed/LeafGreen. The original games will always have historical value for kicking off the series, but in terms of purely objective gameplay and technical points, there's no reason to play them over the remakes, since the remakes have all the content they offered and more. Same with Gold/Silver/Crystal vs HEartGold/SoulSilver. The remakes here also included ALL the content the originals had. So if you never played Gen 2, you're probably just gonna snag one of the remake games. Unless the originals actually have content you can't experience in the remakes, this is generally what happens when a definitive version of a game comes out.

I think people that started with gen 1 are too old now. They're likely in their 30s and such old adults don't really play video games so seeing a lot of support for those games would be rare. People who started with gen 3-5 are likely still teenagers or college students so they're still into those games.

@@superdejan64 Nah, you're completely wrong. It's a well known fact that Pokemon had a major dropoff during gen 3 because the kids who played gen 1 and 2 "grew out" of Pokemon. Yet still it ranked #1 on this survey. It just goes to show people like the quality of the gen 3 games, not nostalgia. BTW, I grew up playing Pokemon Blue on the gameboy and I have nostalgia for that, but my favorite gen is gen 3 because I like the games more than others in the series.

I was surprised by the list outcome, but I wonder if your results would have been different if you sent the survey out more randomly (like being an unknown poster on a reddit) because the demographic of your viewers can sometimes sway the results. Anywho, here are big reasons why people may have loved gen 3 (and some will explain gen 4 a bit as well) way more than other gens. 1. Pokemon Colloseum & Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness (here is a 3d pokemon game that has a different feel due to the plot centers around defeating an evil organization & stealing their pokemon + the region is based off of Arizona). Has completely different feel due to not being made by gamefreak. Also, Mirror B 2. Games are packed with content (same with gen 4) due to this being nintendo's way around US laws making blockbuster legal. Thus, games being long enough with one save file being annoying to borrow from blockbuster. This is why you get a long story, multiple side quests & postgame content. Well, blockbuster is not so big anymore, so not as much content as there was at one point 3. Battle animations/camera positions were at its peak (most visible in pokemon xd: gale of darkness vs something like gen 9). "Fixing Pokémon with Cinematography" youtube vid by Daryl Talks Games explained it well for me. 4. This was the last generation before the tv series changed its voice actor which probably made lots of people not follow the newer games as much 5. compared to prior generations, organizing pokemon is way easier due to your pc box being 2d instead of just a list. 6. Music. Trumpets & Pokemon XD

I just love Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum. They have neat extras. The option to play as a girl in Crystal, the gym leader rematches and Battle Frontier in Emerald, and the wider available Pokédex in Platinum. They deserve remakes or ports.

I really wonder how much the age of people who watch Thomas Game Docs and respond to his surveys factors into these polls. Because it felt like a decade or so ago, Gen. 3 was often considered the worst (being listed on TV Tropes as the Dork Age of the series). I think a lot of the appeal of Pokémon comes from the novelty of the whole concept. So being the first Pokémon game you play (especially if it came out when you were a kid) can cause it to leave the biggest positive impression on you. So what I get from this poll is that a lot of people first played Pokémon on Gameboy Advance. Also, Thomas really needs to exclude “haven’t played” responses from the poll. I feel like it isn’t a valid answer for polls like these.

I really get the nostalgia effect. I grew up with Pokémon right from the very beginning having an older brother who was obsessed with it, though I was never really bothered by it until around 2017 when I picked up leaf green and really tried to understand it (because you can play a Pokémon game, but if you don’t care to know how it all works you may as well have not picked it up), and from there I was hooked. I’m really surprised to know that gen 3 was not received well as I rate it so highly! But I guess that’s what will happen to the current generations as time goes on. I’m very much with you on including a “haven’t played” response on further polls as I took part in this one and couldn’t give much on some of the gens!

@@LibertyBethh Gen 3 was kind of in a similar boat to Sword and Shield when it first released. Because Game Freak didn't manage to find a way to transfer Pokémon from Gen 2 to Gen 3. People who had completed their pokedexes in the previous two gens were pissed they couldn't have their favorite Pokémon in the new games.

Gen 7 is not top 3, it held back by it holding your hand the entire way like you are a 2 year old. The game balance in USUM is also bad as you can easily lead yourself into a brick wall where you have to cheese Ultra Necrozma to win. With those two alone it can't make top 3 because they fall into bad game design and why many games these days suck.

The turnaround on Gen 5 is extreme. Back 10 years ago, it felt like literally everyone hated these games, but now they’re the most popular. The reason they were hated so much was due to a hive mind mentality where people didn’t give the games the credit they deserved due to hearing about how terrible they were and/or because they only focused on the flaws and ignored the huge quantity of good stuff in the games. My prediction is that a very similar thing will happen with S/V in 10 years, where they will be seen as great games that were victims to overhate

Gen 3 was my first Pokémon game, so it definitely deserves a top spot for nostalgic purposes, but I find myself playing Pokémon Y more nowadays. I like the wide selection of Pokémon in their Dex and I think the graphics are beautiful. I don't have a Nintendo Switch, so no comment on the more recent gens.
