The thing abt the NBA is once you get a bad reputation it's hard to get rid of it. Wood should be signed with a team by now. The Bucks are aging and they could use frontcrt depth. The Jazz are rebuilding but they could use a backup to Markkanen. The Sixers, Bulls, and Nets could sign him to a 1 or 2 yr deal.

As a Rockets fan who watched Wood as well, I feel the same way about Wood. His offense is good and aesthetically pleasing to watch. But he's lackadaisical and has little to no interest on defense. His focus seems more on his personal stats than team success. His attitude at times on court when he doesn't get the ball becomes detrimental and it shows on his body language. It's gotten bad to a point where the rockets rookies told Wood that he needs to act more like a veteran.

When you look at player deficiencies (and they all have ‘em), maturity seems like a reasonably easy lock to crack. Time helps, and knowing you’re good, but still no contract? His agent needs to give him the what’s what, and grow the young man with a stern talk, and a vet minimum to think on

Yeah he could show a video with that analysis, but no video can provide insight into what teams think of his attitude. That’s the more likely problem. If it were an efficiency problem, that can be addressed simply by putting him on a different team with better players and in a system that showcases his abilities. It seems the bigger issue is likely something off the court. No way a player of his caliber is still unsigned in September in the NBA unless there’s something non basketball related going on.

He only averages 6 points now on a lakers team that were suppose to use him there 5th best teams player in the starting line up. He started playing against teams that Acually try against him because he is on a playoff team he got exposed for not being good against the best . as a mavs fan, it's clear there was something going on with coaching. it was reported mavs coaches didn't even want to trade for him at all and were trying to move him again immediately after (even tho we gave up a 1st round pick for him) even still he was playing incredible basketball as a starter and 2nd option before the all star break and mavs even offered him an extension (which he declined for $$ reasons) until Kyrie came, then he just didn't fit the system, the offense, and his defense really stood out as a sore spot. his minutes were cut drastically after. I think a team like the heat will be best for maximizing his strengths and hiding his weaknesses.

Thats the point... He did put up numbers, but didnt play incredible. If you play incredible, your team is better with you on the court. Wood had a NetRtg of -5 as a starter in 17 games. As a comparison: Powells NetRtg as a starter was +6. Means Wood did put up way more counting stats, but the team was bad with him in the floor. But the team overall played better with Powell and overall won the minutes with him as a starter.
@yonathantaye1797
@yonathantaye1797 Жыл бұрын
@@Smido83 bit unfair to compare bc wood was a starter when we were at our unhealthiest. our 3 best defenders were all injured during that stretch. wood also often gets all the minutes without Luka bc he's tasked with sustaining the offense when he sits, so his NRTG suffers even still we went on our longest win streak since 2011 (the championship year) when wood was starting and he was an incredible closer. a clutch 3 and an OT block vs the knicks, like 4 blocks in OT against the lakers including 2 against lebron, and had the best 4Q +/- on the team at one point
@Smido83
@Smido83 Жыл бұрын
@@yonathantaye1797 Nothing is unfair. The team won 9 out of 17 Wood starts... while Wood was being a net negative. Means even without those guys we mostly won the minutes with Wood on the bench! Sorry, but there is a reason why no coach Wood ever played for, or franchise overall, wants anything to do with Wood anymore. He is the epitone of a selfish stat padder who doesnt contribute to winning. And yes, we won 7 in a row with him starting... And then lost 5 of the next 7 he started. So what your point? We didnt win those games because of Wood... look what Luka did during that stretch! His 60/20/10 game for example. Or his 51 point game against the Spurs... I am glad Wood isnt on my Mavs anymore. And I completely understand why noone is offering him more then the vet min. If a 17/7 stretch big isnt signed, its his fault not the fault of his ex coach or franchise. Wood played 29 minutes as the 6th man or starter, declined a 36/2 offer from the Mavs, then got injured and after that he wasnt featured anymore. And rightfully so.
@Smido83
@Smido83 Жыл бұрын
@@yonathantaye1797 Edit: Wood played 950 minutes with Luka, Powell 990. The Luka/Powell combo had a NetRtg of +7.4, the Luka/Wood combo a NetRtg of +1.8... So Luka could bail him out when together. But he was really bad without Luka (NetRtg of -3.8) I give you that. As a comparison, Powell still had a NetRtg of +3.9 without Luka... I am sorry, but all your "arguments" are either wrong or pure cope...

I'm gonna go with that Christian Wood will sign with the Miami Heat once Damian Lillard is traded there. I also think he should be the starting Power Forward. At this point, if I'm Christian Wood, I would be worried that no team was willing to give me a contract in Free Agency, so I would be more interested to join the Heat because it seems like they're bound to make a deep Playoff run. And where do players show most of their talent and get big contracts? The Playoffs. Wood is a good offense player with versatile skills, but his defense is atrocious. I think if he joined the Heat, he would buy into the Eric Spoelstra system and put more effort on defense and do the dirty work so he will be able to show NBA teams that he can be a complimentary player.

The Rockets suspended him for conduct detrimental. Wood has a overvalued sense of self. The reason McGee and Howard worked so well with LA was because they were well past their prime and they had shed their ego.

@@je5406 There is no outside reporting on the Rockets incident, that's why I reserve judgment and don't think it proves much. How you can know Wood has an "overvalued sense of self" without knowing the $ amount he asked for? That's just another assumption. Wood is younger than either McGee or Howard were when they joined the Lakers, so those are bad comparisons. Far from accepting that his best days are behind him like Howard did, I think he just wants to be on a team that knows what it's doing. Rockets and Pistons don't, Mavs are clueless on how to build around Luka. Long comment, but this deal where fans build a negative narrative on a guy based on selected incidents (one!) while playing on losing or tanking teams gets me going.

I think it would be extremly hard for him to go unsigned and then work his way back into the league. With all those issues I do not think that he has got the work ethic to reclaim his spot in the league, once he is out.

It always amazes me when talented athletes have a chance at making hundreds of millions of dollars, but blow the bag because they are knuckle heads. He had a remarkable comeback story that made him a hard worker but it lasted such a short period. After he was starting for HOU he had a ego of Harden/Rusell and honestly believing he was a max contract player. He has a similar playing style as Jahlil Okafor whom was 3rd overall pick but ended up becoming a bust due to him not improving on defensive end. Looks like round the league his work ethic is well know and no team is buying his show that he put up last season. (He did try to act cool to be support piece of the team)

I am a Knick fan, I remember young Zach Randolph. He didn't care about defense, I mean zero. He was getting points and rebounds and ignoring playing defense. He was the worst that I've seen in all time. The point I made is that young Christian has to get into a defense-oriented team and get his career back.

I think the pending Dame trade is a factor (like you said). Also like you mentioned, I think they’re maybe some over-valuing in himself too. The Knicks just traded away Obi Toppin, so Woods would be a nice fill-in. I just don’t think Any team competing for a championship would want a player who’s looking to prove himself on a one year deal! Not gonna do the things championship teams will need. Just my two pennies.

I watched every single Mavs game last season. Really believed in Wood and wanted him to start early on, but as the year went by I really soured on him, particularly because his defense is as bad as advertised. What's more, his screens are the worst I've ever seen on a big man, even Hardaway sets better screens. He's a truly gifted offensive player, but he wants to play like he's the first option and that simply isn't ideal. If he wakes up to his reality for his next team (if he does get another contract) and just hustles his ass out there he'll be a steal. But as he is right now, it's not hard to see why he's on his way to washing out of the league. Kelly Oubre is on the same boat.

Your reputation follows you wherever you go. Wood should be thankful he had an opportunity to make some real good money in the NBA. He left UNLV when everybody told him not to and ended up not getting drafted. You would think that and having to earn his way into the NBA would have humbled him. I guess it has not. If this contest situation does not get him to change, nothing will.

...... i've never thought of Wood as a center! I think he has always been more of a Dirk-style player at the 4. Rim protection is not his style as a routine...... but if he's a head-case as reported, time to go..... i have noticed a certain attitude common among our current players now that everyone is all-in as a team and on getting better over time, and winning a championship .... the same mind-set as their coach! ..... but yeah, i like Wood and feel like he has been mis-used in Dallas.... pair him up with a big at center.....
