I own a Vox VT40X 40 watt modeling amp. I bought it after seeing a blindfold "affordable amp shootout" video on Anderton's KZbin channel 6 months ago. They compared the Vox to a Marshall Code 50, a Boss Katana 50, a Line 6 Catalyst CX 60, a Fender Champion 50XL, an Orange Crush 35RT, a Blackstar Debut 50R, and a Hiwatt Leeds 50W. The Vox was the first amp they listened to and it beat out all the other amps with it's fantastic tones. Because it was introduced 9 years ago there are many used models available for low prices. I absolutely love mine!

I was a fender guy forever, got a Vox for a Radiohead band and wasn’t sure if I’d ever use it outside of that. My deluxe reverb went into the shop for a month and fell in love (or just got used to) the sound so much that when my deluxe reverb came back it felt off, too much bass flub in the notes. My Vox ac30 (1x12) gives me a bright clean pedal platform I can throw tons of pedals at and love using as a trio or with multiple guitars.

My 1st tube amp was one of the Stage Right 15's and it was great. I sold it to help pay for the upgrade and was looking at the Hot Rod Deluxe, AC15 price range. Lyle at Psionic Audio told me the AC15 CC has a way better quality than anything Fender put out at in the sub $800 category. I found a used British Racing green AC15 for $400 and I took the greenback out of and put in an alinco blue and I love it. My wife bought me a Mustang Micro Plus (I had the old Vox bees in a can Amplug) and for the 1st couple of weeks I didn't use the app, just played thru the presets without knowing what they were, I kept the screen facing away to avoid any bias. The 3 amp models I would always find myself on were the Clean Deluxe, the Vox under Brit Pop, and a Silvertone. I'm anything but a pro but it was a nice validation that I do indeed prefer the Vox sound. Wish Id kept rhe Stage Right one though and put the greenback in it though as the speaker was the only thing I didn't love about it.

Bought my Vox VT40X 3-4 years back after seeing Henning's review. Then there was the recent shootout at Anderton's where the Vox beat out a lot of the top selling modelling amps. I think there being an actual 12AX7 in the preamp section contributed to that win. The only thing I miss is an effects loop. It staggers me that Vox has basically abandoned the software for the VTs. Vox could make a dent in Katana, Line 6 or even Spark sales if they just supported and marketed themselves. They never seem to be mentioned in any amp conversation, aside from being mentioned as part of Brian May's back line.

Hope they are doing okay, I think they are definitely different enough, cool enough, and have had enough historical impact to deserve a seat at the table.

I think a big problem with VOX is that they are so iconic that they can´t easy release new stuff. They only have the same models since the 60s. And when they do new stuff it´s over the top. Like a 3 Channel 150w amp with NuTubes, ugly blue light and effects etc. ... I love VOX and I own a AC 15 and a AC 15 Twin... But I wish they would do some cool stuff like Fender with thier Tonemaster series. Like a classical VOX with NuTube, low weight and easy to usw but only Stuff the AC 15 or AC 30 had in it.

I've played guitar since 1995, got my first tube amp (which I still own but very rarely gets played) in 2008, bought and sold one in 2009 and one in 2016. That's my experience with tube amps. 99% of the time anymore I'm playing with a modeler because it's lighter, easier, and more consistent from gig to gig, especially when I'm switching between electric and acoustic. I say that because I've long wanted a Vox amp, but I can't justify it because I wouldn't use it. I do use Vox models, though, on pretty much every project I record.

Thanks for your talk. I have a Valvetronix VT40X with the Footswitch. That's like an amp with an 8 pedal board. I only use 4 of the available amp presets, with a clean and a boostsd reverb option for each of the 4. That's the VT40X itself, an AC30, a Fender Tweed, and a Marshall Boutique. It's a great set-up and sounds awesome. I also run my own pedalboard into the front end, with some Boss drivers, Caline and Joyo Ambience pedals, a tuner and looper. Mind you, my guitars also sound good via that pedalboard plugged into my 65w Laney (with a FX loop). Recently the VOX headphone jack failed for my studio monitors... I've only had the VOX a month. I see online this is a known issue. Others complain online about the Footswitch being poorly constructed, but I'm not rough with my gear - the Footswitch is trouble-free so far. Anyway, the company I bought my VOX from are very good. They have offered free shipping pickup for a repair and assessment - I think they will check everything while they have it with them. I still have the original shipping box and packing gear, so it's an easy return process for me. I bought the VOX VT40X after it won the Blind Amp Test with Anderton's... based on its valve pre-amp clean tones. I'm not that fascinated by the combo presets it comes with. The VOX VT150X has a FX Loop, and more bells/whistles, but I dont need that much grunt. I'm now wondering about a Peavey Bandit Redline or an Artist Guitars R20 valve amp as future options.

Love vox amps but eventually migrated over to a twin reverb, Princeton reverb, custom vibrolux and deluxe 5e3 style amp. The vox amps can be painfully bright at times and are difficult to EQ to remove the prominent highs. They kinda do one sound but it’s an iconic one nonetheless.

4:46 Exactly - I know everyone lusts over the vintage Vox amps, including me. You don’t hear people excited about the tube amps Vox is producing today. I just got the MV50 BM for Christmas and I love it. Sounds great through a Tone Tubby 4040 12in. speaker. But also… I recognize that my ears are calibrated weird and I love tones that other people write off as “shrill” or ice picky. And tones most people love, like the classic PAF tone, sounds muddy and covered with a blanket to me. I blame listening to too much Brian May. I would love to see more from Vox’s social media, too. I LOVED the Tube Amp candle that they actually produced in collab with Uncle Ron’s Candle Company for April Fools. It’s really, really nice. It smells like how I’d imagine the 70s to smell, but without the cigarette smoke. It has a nice musk with a hint of soap that was definitely trying to evoke the ozone smell. What is the point of my long comment? I’m rooting for Vox. They’re my favorite British amp by a country mile. Marshall is too aggressive for me personally, Orange sounds like a British amp with a smoker’s cough. Vox is that sweet spot when I want some more grit than my Fender Princeton is able to provide me at bedroom volume.

I have a couple of their bass amp combos from the early 2000s. but, they're really underpowered! The T-25 is 25 watts with a 10-inch speaker and the T-60 is 60 watts with a 12-inch speaker. So, Once upon a time I bought an old Pathfinder 15 at a pawn shop, sounded really good, especially plugged into a quad. Even changed out the speaker for a 10” and it sounded even better, great Footswitch ability too, and nice tremolo, reverb, great little amp, so I decided to get an AC15C1. Just couldn’t love it, it was loud, but couldn’t get a smooth tone out of it, had to let it go. Then I thought about it, the Beatles only used them because they got them for free. As soon as the sweetheart deal was over, they couldn’t wait to throw them out and bought Fender amps. I guess they didn’t actually like them either. I now play a Marshall amp, way better and way more versatile.

People just prefer Matchless/Morgan. Vox struggles with the same thing that Marshall had and is getting better about, continuing their line of amps. Most modern Vox amps are just not comparable to vintage equivalents, and Marshall was dealing with the same thing up until they started making changes these last two years. No one plays the modern interpretations because they don't do what the earlier models did and there are boutique amps that do what the older variants did and better, for me that is the issue and why the brand isn't having as many sales or interest today.

I keep a NuTube Cambridge 50 at my band's practice space that I got for like $175 and it's pretty great. Although it sits on the deluxe reverb amp model, as I have a DRRI at home/for shows. I also have an AC30 that I'm planning to retube and sell. It was a relic of my days in a loud, 2 guitar rock band and it sliced through the mix live. It has its own sound, which is really cool in some contexts, but it is kind of a one trick pony. I feel like my DRRI is more versatile (esp with am EQ pedal to boost mids when needed) and better suits my needs with what I'm playing now (quieter with more space). That AC30 also really wants to be loud. I also have a Laney el84 15 watt head that gets in the same neighborhood, without being quite as bright, so I have that if I need that flavor. And of course, the Cambridge has an AC setting too (it's okay for what it is, but of course not quite there).

How long ago did they drop the previous handwired amps? I know I was looking into their HW Wah a couple of years ago, and it seemed like they were discontinued because they were always listed as unavailable on pretty much every Canadian site, and when you did find one, it was either a radically inflated price, or it was an impossibly low price and available only from a disreputable dealer, so likely a scam offer. But now they seem to still be “available to order” from reputable Canadian dealers again. 🤷🏼

I'm more of a Deluxe and Princeton reverb fan since they're so versatile with any guitar. But, when you get an AC15 dialed in for a certain guitar, man, it's a fantastic tone, but when switching guitars, I'd spend another 15mins dialing it in again. I always thought it responded and sounded a lot better turned up pretty loud, or else it was pretty harsh and thin. The AC10 is a lot more portable and sounds good at lower levels, and even better through a 1x12 or larger. The pathfinder is surprisingly great sounding little amp that does the vox sound well, at least the early gen one I have with the blue bulldog speaker.

Eventually I figured that I'd rather have a JMI era Vox. I'm still waiting and looking. I think all amp companies are having trouble selling traditional tube amps now. Marshall makes more money from bluetooth desktop music speakers.

I love Vox for the chimey brightness and the 70s Punk style overdrive.

I would love to see a nanoTube toneLab floor processor by vox. I won’t HodL my breath.

I have an AC15 Twin and a TV4. The twin AC15 is great but it is furniture now as it's too heavy to move.

All I know for certain; from actual real life experiences is that the Vox Pathfinder 15/15r was an exceptional, cheap, mass produced practice amp.

I considered getting one of the mini Beatle amps, but when they were available I wound up having to get other stuff. A friend had a Vox modeler that got some cool sounds, but I got a Fender one, but would have been good witheither

I want an AC15 but don’t need another tube amp. One of Lyle’s hand wired ones, Psionic Audio, would be awesome though!

I do agree, it seems like they do nothing at all now. And, the AC10 has reverb, but the AC4s do not. I thought/think they should make an AC4 with Reverb. Prove me wrong!! 😅 😂 🤣
