church bass player here and I find the 5 string a must. Many times vocalists can't sing in the key of the original song, so we are transposing down a bit and with the 5 string I am able to keep the same feel and energy of the song that I would otherwise lose by being forced to play an octave up on those lowest notes in the original tune.

I play in a church band, praise and worship/Gospel. I switched to a 5 string a few years ago, as we would learn a song in a particular key, say G, but then the choir would start singing in, for example E flat. Those extra 5 low notes can come in really handy in situations like this.

Most working bass players I've met tend to prefer 5 string, I definitely agree. If you play with unusual instruments or in the keys of d and eb a lot it's just so incredibly useful, also 5 string gives you more space in higher positions too which can make some basslines more ergonomic. Overall if you can only afford one bass I'd get a 5 string. I'd have a 6 and a 4 if I could afford more haha

I'm also in the "it doesn't really matter" camp. I've had a few 6 strings, plenty of 5 strings and now I only have 4 string basses. This is a personal choice as I perform a lot better with a 4 string as I find it a lot more comfortable. Plus I like to keep things simple.

If I buy a bass again, I would go for 5 string because it is what I got accustomed to and what works the best for me. I also need a p bass with flats to have that Jamerson-ish sound.

Good video. I’m in the same camp also. I have a 5 string Jazz bass. I don’t use it as often as my 4 string Yamaha BB but, I keep it around just in case.

I agree that there is no right answer here. I started out with a 4 strings, then sold it to buy a 5 strings, When I finally could afford a 2nd bass, I had one of each. Do you NEED a 5 strings? Not necessarily, but it's a nice tool to have.

To me it always comes down to the singer. If the band can play every song in the original key then I’ll take a four-string every time. The reality is singers need to change the key, this is just a fact of life. Five-string basses are a required tool to get the job done.

I'm surprised about your keyboard player who doesn't like a bassist to play a 5-string. I'm guessing he doesn't do anything in Eb - that's when I find the extra range comes in really handy... also... you can have a 5 string and not play below the low E. AND it makes it a lot easier to play on long gigs when you can keep your hand around the 5th fret... but hey. If he's paying, he's choosing. No arguing with the boss!

I like all basses... YOU will find out the hard way sometimes That what fits OTHERS doesn't work for You. Sometimes you want to play the 4 string. You may be ready to experiment, so try A 6 string bass.

I clicked on this video just to correct your spelling in the title. It’s spelled D O E S.

He plays the pipe organ and therefore needs zero strings.
