We often look at anger as a bad thing, wrath is one of the seven deadly sins after all. However, there are situations in life which might require some anger on our part. If someone threatens a loved one, for example, I'm sure many of us would be angry and act in response.
But how can we tell when anger is justified? Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics provides an answer. He asks us to apply reason to our anger, only getting angry at things which are reasonable to be mad at. We should be angry at the right things, in the right way, at the right time, and in the right amount.
To help us determine if our anger is unreasonable, he offers 4 examples of people who are excessive in their anger: the irascible person, the choleric person, the bitter person, and the complainer. #philosophy #aristotle #greekphilosophy

Anger can be positive as you note. Just consider historically the strikes of trade unions that sought fair pay and good work conditions. As noted its hard to vent your anger in a calm way for it can istinctively lead to harshness.

From my experience, there is no right amount of anger. Nobody gives a single shit why you're angry, they just see some guy affecting their day, especially when they are the problem.

i only read the first 2 books of the nicomachean ethics, however from my understanding, the excess and the deficiency of a certain virtue is related to the individual, excess of courage will be recklessness if you lack wisdom to make a good decision, isnt that the same with anger? you could do the right action without acting on your emotions(similar to Stocism)

It's completely dependant on the outcome. Favourable outcomes get attributed to wisdom, patience & emotional maturity, whereas unfavourable outcomes are attributed to recklessness, acting on emotions, anger etc. It's an a posteriori assessment so riddled with bias that it's weird hearing it discussed as an objective measurement.
