Its Always interesting to hear, how people can even come to the Idea of asking, why one should for example be virtuos, as If they knew what they are speaking of and would raise a Sound Question. It is indeed no Sound Question at all, at least for those who know the meaning of the Words spoken about. For the Question, why one should be virtuos, is Like asking, why one should be good, further including, why one should do, what is good? This follows from the Nature of virtues being Always Something good. So If one would understand, what one is about to say, one would immediatly understand, that this and such Questions are redundant. There is No possible direct benefit of doing badly, for it is absurd.

I believe true happiness can be decorrelated from pleasure gratification, it' something in my opinion worth debating

Very true, happiness has always been a complicated term for me.

I think happiness and pleasure are two separate things; happiness being the long lasting virtue driven feeling, and pleasure being the short lasting sensory based or materialistic gain based feeling. One reason why virtue brings happiness is that it fills the empty void within us, giving us a sense of healthy self-love. We know we are worthy of love not because of what others think about us, but because we love ourselves when we are living in alignment with our values.

Wtf why does this channel have so little subs??? The production, content, quality, intent, choice of words and everything about these videos should be observed and absorbed by everyone. I think it would be the virtuous thing to spread this. Channel as much as possible. @philosophyToons I think you should consider some advertising too, I’d be happy to give you some tips (coz it’s my field of work) Wish you the best and thank you so much for this content 🤍

The thing about the long term gratification of virtuous acts is that you have to believe Aristotle that you I'll feel better about doing the right thing. The other problem is that people who don't do the right thing will not necessarily feel bad in the long run because of the magical effects of rationalisation. Their mind will create a moral framework where they are not guilty and will never feel that way. Aristotle begins with premisses that one should believe (good deeds will lead you to a good life, bad deeds will haunt you forever) in order to be convinced, but this is not necessarily true in reality. So how do you deal with the magical effects of rationalisation with relation to ethics?

In my personally opinion, Aristotle doesn't do a very good job explaining why people do bad and how that will effect them. You're right in that people might try and rationalize their bad actions and maybe even turn it into something good. I think then that Aristotle might best apply to people who are able to recognize their mistakes and desire to be a good person. Obviously this isn't for everyone, but I'd say a good chunk of people could be influenced.

@@PhilosophyToons true, many people are going to be responsive to the call to ethics and good doing. The thing is that it will start with desire to be good and reasons will only be there to reinforce the desire. Reason is a tool either to reinforce virtue or to rationalize vice (whatever virtue and vice are in ones moral framework). All of my philosophical inquiries make me come back to Spinoza who said that it is not because we find something reasonable that we want it but because we want it that we find it reasonable. Desire is what leads to action. So it's better to try and work on having better desires. It's not easy but it's the only way of change in my opinion.

Great video, I would enjoy any videos of this style and was wondering if you would do one on Simone De Beauvoir? Also I would really appreciate if the backgrounds were not so white, kinda hurts my eyes.

I'll play around with different background colors. I've read The Ethics of Ambiguity before and it never really stuck, but I'll reread it eventually.

I do not think that pleasure or happiness are the right words. I don't think those things are the most desirable, and I don't think that's what virtuous actions cause. I think that virtuous actions can be painful and unpleasant but they give you the peace of mind or blamelessness. You know that despite the suffering you did the right thing and your conscience doesn't haunt you. So it not pleasure, it's more lack of guilt.
