If we're talking about the continuous bit of tarmac (under motorway regs) then it's the M6 the A74(M) and M74 which of course is one continuous motorway corridor between Catthorpe and Glasgow not to mention the completion of the M74 that adds more mileage

The Great North Road within the M25 is made up of Upper Street, the Holloway, Archway, Aylmer and Lyttelton Roads, Falloden, Watford, Great North and Barnet Ways and the Barnet By-Pass. The Great North Road starts separately, in Little Heath, Potters Bar, where the A1000 (formerly A1 before the Barnet By-Pass was built - in America it would be called US-1-Business) crosses the Coal Tax Line (the official boundary of London), running separately to Stanborough. From here, they run together. Some towns have been by-passed: with a few exceptions, the designation "Great North Road" usually takes the by-pass south of the River Trent, but remains on the old road through the town north of the Trent. The designation "A1" always takes the by-pass. I cannot find any instances of the name "Great North Road" north of the Scottish border.

This prompted me to look up the B2109 in Newhaven East Sussex. A road I used to live next to. It used to run from Newhaven to Beddingham where it met the A27. However, due to some jiggery-pokery in the late60s early 70s, it was upgraded to be the A26 ...apart from a short length through an industrial estate in Newhaven. Its still over 900m though.

I believe the shortest B road is the B327, making up a part of Charles II Street in London, between Haymarket and Waterloo Place. London has many short ones other than this. Shortest A road I believe is either the A962 in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, making up the entire length of Castle Street, or the A3009 in Esher, making up the southern side of Esher Green between the High Street and Church Street

One fun fact I always remember is that the four longest Interstates in the US (I-90, I-80, I-74, and I-10) are all individually longer than the UK's entire motorway network. In fact, I-90 itself is just over 700 miles longer!
@Andrewjg_892 ай бұрын
People say that the A1 is the longest road. But as you say it isn’t because it’s been upgraded with motorway standards and becomes A1(M). The A5, A34, A38 and A41 is separated by other roads that these roads would have continued without being separated.
@richardfurness75562 ай бұрын
What about a video on the strange case of the A42? I own a copy of the AA Book Of The Road (1966 edition) and all the double-digit A roads in England are marked on its maps except that one. A Google search told me it originally ran from Reading to Birmingham, but the article didn't really explain why it vanished so soon after it had been classified.
@pmberry2 ай бұрын
You could argue the A1 is a continuous road, parts of which are subject to motorway regulations. Indeed, that is my argument 😊
@martineyles2 ай бұрын
I was think M1 or M6, as the M1 starts further south, but the M6 goes to the Scottish border. This assumes that the non-toll M6 is continuous from the M1 to the north of England and that there isn't multiplexing around Birmingham. I didn't think of the A1, but not for any clever reason. I just forgot it even existed.
@davidparsons972 ай бұрын
There's also the fact of the M6, A74(M) and M74 are effectively one road categorised as 3 roads from Catthorpe to the the M8 around Glasgow.

@@davidparsons97 But in the video, Bryn treats them separately.
@davidparsons972 ай бұрын
@martineyles Like I say, they're categorised separately, so Bryn is correct. That said, they've been effectively one continuous road since 2008, even though they haven't been renumbered as one uniform M6. The plan in the 80s and 90s was to renumber it, but the precursor to Highways England took so long to complete the M6 beyond Carlisle that it never officially happened.

I know it's just for fun but hard disagree that the A1 and A1(M) are 'different roads' - almost anyone living near a motorway section just calls it the 'A1' anyway. The (M) is just useful on signs for non-motorway traffic to know to avoid it. Of course this logic about 'not different' then falls to pieces when considering the A3 and A3(M)...
