The reason why there was such hooplah over the style was because, in a way, the Flash style was (possibly still is) McMillen's primary style. It was the bread and butter of his style, alongside fairly simple pixel arts. Nowadays, we don't mind Rebirth's style because it is legit good, but it was an upheaval seeing how detailed Rebirth is with its 16 Bit-like style.

Pixel art is not the most time consuming style but it helps to learn some basics of art including how light and shadows work and what colors are or aren't good for certain things. Also in pixel art, some pixels can change the feeling of whole characters and objects. It's not always easy to make everything work just right if you work on a small canvas and yes, 3D is more time consuming, even frustating for me actually, but it's shouldn't be a reason for me to like it the way you or others do.

Sad that Rain World wasn't explicitly mentioned because the animation style (pretty sure I think it's procedurally generated...?) makes the world feel so alive and fluid. A friend recommended me the game and I checked it out solely for that reason. Edit: A bit of debate in the comments, so I'd like to state: Ace Attorney and Night in the Woods are not gameplay based video games. They rely on story and dialogue heavily. Rain World, however, has no dialogue for a majority of the game. It focuses instead on art and gameplay. Just because a game was not mentioned, does not mean it's bad. (Also for hand drawn, very surprised Don't Starve and Don't Starve Together weren't mentioned. Even the animations on Klei's YT channel have so much life and charm.)

This is a really good and interesting video. I don't necessarily agree with your opinions but I really enjoyed the way you conveyed your thoughts, your jokes were funny and your Avatar/Sona is really nicely animated throughout! This video stuck with me and got thinking, which I genuinely appreciate. That being said I do disagree with some of your points specifically in how you boiled down the 3 key "Art Styles". Pixel Art, 2D Hand Drawn & 3D are not inherently art styles but rather they're mediums. A medium (in regards to art) is "the substance used to create an art piece". Drawing Something with Crayons isn't inherently a style, neither is drawing with pencils, sculpting out of clay isn't a specific style either and the same can be said for wood carving. A style is defined by the way these mediums are used to bring the vision of the artiest to life, and while a Medium can factor into what defines a specific style a medium itself isn't the defining characteristic of a style. Take Aladdin on the Sega Genesis for example, the Sprite Work (or Pixel Art) in that game was done by the same team of animators who created the animation for the movie. And they used the same traditional animation techniques they used for the film, those animations were simply converted to Pixel Art afterwards. HAL Laboratory had a background designer illustrate the backgrounds for each stage in Kirby's Adventure before they were translated to Pixel Art as well. And Pizza Tower's entire aesthetic is built off of 2D animation and illustrations yet Pixel Art is the medium used to convey that aesthetic. So if these games use combinations of 2D "Hand Drawn" and Pixel Art, then what category would they fall into? How about Donkey Kong Country, or Super Mario RPG or any other games that use 2D Prerendered Graphics of 3D Models? Again, the mediums used to creative these art styles are not the sole factors of what define the styles of the art in question. So to say that Cuphead, for example, has a better style than Pizza Tower, on the basis that Cuphead is "2D Hand drawn" while Pizza Tower is "Pixel Art", doesn't make any sense because while both games have different visual styles the execution of those styles (Hand Drawn Art & Animation) go hand in hand with one another. (I know you didn't use the example of Cuphead Vs. Pizza Tower but it was the first thing that came to mind in trying to express this point) I do agree with you that many Pixel Art based indie games have a very generic look to them, but I don't see this as a fault of the medium but rather a limit of the skill of the artiest in question. (IE: Skill Issue.) And saying that 3D is the definitive "Triple A" look is very shortsighted as it overlooks the swath of equally Generic looking 3D indie games that are on the market and limits the potential of Traditional 2D & Pixelated Experiences. Pixel, 2D or 3D, art is time consuming and I'd argue that no medium is more or less time consuming/difficult than the other. To say that Pixel Art or 2D Hand drawn are easier than 3D is once again shortsighted since just because I can draw something faster than I can sculpt it doesn't mean that the drawing is going to look good. It doesn't matter how "Easy" something may seem to create, at the end of the day in terms of graphics it's a matter of how it looks. And it doesn't matter whether you're sketching or sculpting, coloring or texturing, or animating either one, the amount of time that is put into something doesn't inherently equate to how "good" it looks. It's not to fair to objectively rank mediums or art styles against each other based on the quality of the products created using them or the patience required to work with them. Because as the old saying goes "One Bad Apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch" and each Style/Medium provides their own unique set of challenges and nuances that keep often times keep them on a fairly level playing field in terms of difficulty. That being said it's perfectly fine to have personal preferences in styles, I certainly do and if you disagree with my tastes that's perfectly fine in fact more power to ya'! If you've made it this far CONGRATULATIONS on making it to the end of this Accidentally Long Winded comment! I'd like to thank you for reading and again I really did enjoy your video. Also one last thing that the two of us 100% agree on and you will never seen an argument from me about is how much Ai art freaking SUCKS. Thanks for the comment. You're completely right i should've called them mediums. while making this i spent a good 20 minutes trying to think of a word to call them but in the end i failed just calling them "main art styles" anyways yeah pixel art CAN take more time than 3D but i was comparing them more generally from my experience as someone who does 3D, Hand drawn AND pixel art. everyone's different though you can either be really fast at drawing or slow. So i guess my rankings weren't that objective but i think they still reflect a bit of truth even if it's not much. and yeah ai does suck

Funny thing about Pixel Art is that it becomes much more time consuming than traditional handdrawn art after a certain resolution. Because after a certain sprite size you basically have to draw it traditionally first and then have to clean up everything to be pixel perfect. The larger you go the more funky techniques also start to appear, like anit aliasing (really "fun" to do this on an animated 128x128 sprite ;-;).

Could also check out Omori's art style. The exploring part of the game is usually depicted with pixel art similar to Undertale and Earthbound, but when it comes to combat and portraits, the all seem hand-drawn, jittering slightly, like a crudely drawn notebook animation you flip through. Besides that, the game has a double bottom when it comes to art outside of combat, in the existence of SPOILER ALERT, SPOILER ALERT Black Space. Like seriously, this game has three different artsyles that share the same similarity: all of them being almost hand-drawn. But they vary incredibly depending on which of the three art styles are we viewing. If it's headspace, everything's bright, almost everything looks like right out of sketchbook. If it's real world, everything's suddenly so dull and boring, which I guess is the point. This art-style is down to earth for obvious reasons. And then there's black space and it's distinct artstyle similar to one of Yume Nikki. The game just suddenly goes batshit insane, throwing spooky, confusing or goofy situations at the player, (almost) all of which have a certain meaning behind them. Omori's artstlye perfectly encapsualtes the vividness of a dream, the dullness of reality and the ominous atmosphere of a neverending nightmare.

Pizza tower is a prime exaple of Pixel Art Potention, I feel that there are so many different ways people can use the small canvases in pixel art to create amazing creations. I just love how pizza tower contradicts what most indie-pixel art creations look like. Take Stardew Valley (Still a absolutely great game) and notice how most of it's art has all these beautifully blended colors. And also most of the ingame sprites only yield around 200 or so pixels. Whereas Pizza Tower only uses a solid color (and shading) on their characters. The sprites are around the same size during gameplay, but in most images and cutscenes. the canvasses are MASSIVE compared to what most of us are used to. Which personally has some charm with me because I do something similar. But I also love how Goofy the designs look. Lie how in some images of Peppino, the main character, they are all goofily exaggerated in a great way. It also feels like someone just made a 600x600 canvas, took a basic drawing tool, and just sloppily created the line art. Which all in all gives Pizza Tower, this comedic. Amazinglt-made refresher of an indie game.

the video is really good and I'm surprised by how little subscribers you have to other simillar channels, but as a 3d artist myself I can safely say 2d animation is far harder than 3d modelling. You have to draw each frame individually as opposed to making one model and moving around bodyparts with keyframes. And in a simillar fashion, pixel art is far harder than just drawing, the whole point of pixel art being you have very little pixels to work with, you have to make sure everything clearly stands out and looks good.

*3D modelling isn't any harder to learn or make then 2D art, the tools are just less intuitive.* The only genuinely tricky part of 3D modelling is maintaining the model's wireframe. All models are basically a grid of squares (polygons) that form a shape. Think of it like a cage you wrap in paper. If you leave a big hole in the bars, or have bars that bend in weird ways, the paper will tear, fold, or just look lumpy and bad. When sculpting/building a model, you're basically adding/manipulating the cage's bars, so you need to make sure you don't break them. This can be hard, but I'd argue it isn't any more difficult than figuring out perspective, lighting, or colour in 2D art.

Good video but I’m a bit bugged by the conflation with artistic mediums and art styles. That framing makes it feel like the individual mediums are more limited than they are. Like something like shovel knight is pixel art, but the art style is completely different than Pizza tower or Celeste or even its sequel, shovel knight dig.
@PotatoPatatoVonSpudsworth Жыл бұрын
As a game artist, let me note that while pixel art IS faster for an expert, it's FAR more difficult to learn and much slower if you're trying to figure it out as you go. This is because pixel art demands extreme precision. Any pixel out of place is immediately noticeable, expressing detail is much more difficult, and keeping animations readable becomes a much greater hassle. Another big misconception is that realistic 3D models are more difficult then cartoony or lowpoly 3D models. If a game with a realistic artstyle needs a teapot, it's as easy as finding some reference images online and creating a teapot. If a game with a lowpoly or cartoony artstyle needs a teapot, we'll need to create or find actual concept art and references for how that teapot should look. And if we have multiple people making these non-realistic models, they need to all understand the game's artstyle well enough that everything they create fits together. Meanwhile if we want realistic graphics, all they need to do is make sure their props look realistic. It may take some extra time to texture and bake those realistic models, but it's still MUCH harder to get it "wrong" compared to more stylized designs.

There are a few things id like to say about pixel art 1. You could not achieve 3D or any high res stuff on older consoles so it isnt just no cartridge space, it would literally fry the console. 2. Pixel art has mostly evolved past the “its used as its easier” and more “its nice and retro/crisp looking”. An example of a game that used a pixel style but took long to make was OMORI. It took them 6 years to fully complete the game. 3. With modern hardware, it is not limited to only 16 colors anymore which means pixel art can be pretty much anything.

Tbh, putting down pixel art as the "lesser art form" is pretty closed-minded Take a look at games that do pixel art well, like Rain World, who mixes pixel art with procedural animation to make a super unique, detailed, and almost disturbingly organic artstyle that gives every living thing in the game its own sense of personality. 2D hand-drawn art can also be used lazily, take a look at Blackthronprod's video games (which are quality, but the use of JUST still animated pngs with a little bounce and boring unity particles make it feel lifeless) If anything, nowadays the overabundance of lazy 3D rigs and animation, with a million examples such as Tattletail, Garten of Banban I and II, and more- There are examples of any art medium being used poorly and used well. There is no "better" art style, and nobody should feel bad for using pixel art for their games. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance's artstyle works well because of how the pixel art was used, and it being pixel art doesn't detract from the game itself. If anything, it helps to optimize the whole Isaac's visual changes with each item. By god, can 3D assets be not only overused but completely ruin a majority of games due to it's ease of access. It takes real talent and a lot of work not to make 3D assets, but GOOD 3D assets for video games, specifically. It's not about whether or not it is 3D, but rather about the execution in which 3D assets, rigs, and animations are used that matter, just like in every other art medium. The only thing that an artstyle can do to hurt a game is if it impacts gameplay negatively. But, no, even games that, if you took any still image from it, would look ugly actually end up being some of the best, most polished games of their year. Pizza tower is rough and gives off MSPaint vibes but the animation is so smooth and expressive that the sketchy style actually improves the game. Psychonauts has gross, grungy textures and weird models, but it perfectly fits the aesthetic and instantly becomes charming once you play the game. Fears to Fathom is far from looking amazing, but the horror is so intensely impactful that the low quality aesthetic helps to alienate the player while also letting their mind fill in the blanks left by the devs. The medium of your game's artstyle itself isn't going to improve or detract from your game. It's about how that artstyle is used and how it meshes with the gameplay that is important. There are examples for every medium that proves it can be done well, and can be done poorly. So, don't treat a game as lesser just because it uses pixel art, and don't hold a game above all others just because it uses 3D graphics. There are perks to them all and there is not one that is better than the other.

@moony_otter Жыл бұрын
@@pabloojeda6183 1 - pixel art is just as easy or hard as any other medium. 3D is honestly easier than pixel art, and can just as easily be done poorly. In reality, comparing art mediums is pointless. Of course, you can, but ultimately you're comparing apples to oranges; they lead to similar things but they all have benefits that make them wholly unique. 2 - How difficult it is to create something in some medium doesn't make anyone a better or worse artist. It's about execution. A person can do a painting with professional paints, and another can do a drawing digitally. The quality of the art doesn't come from the medium, but the final product and how that medium was used to get there. 3 - The point is that the art style of a game doesn't need to be one or the other, but simply must compliment the gameplay first and foremost. Good games have art styles that blend seamlessly with their gameplay and worlds, and give the player visual cues while also making the setting unique to that game's world. 4 - People who criticize by saying "are you even an artist" tend to not be artists themselves. Why not make your own game with your own style of choice first, that way you can understand the process and better relate to game developers working in their own self-contained styles? Telling an artist they aren't an artist when you don't do art, is like telling a mechanic they're not a mechanic when you don't know what a steering wheel is. To all you pixel artists out there, you are absolutely an artist. Keep it up.

I'm more of a pixel art guy, while I do love me some good 2D drawn stuff, the devs of any game can use whatever art style they want. Yes there are many games with pixel art, but usually a new spin is put on it, so 3D or 2D isn't always the best, especially for what kind of game or what kind of environment is made.

I think you should also consider another factor: space (and by extension, performance). Pixel art games take up much less space, especially when compared to 3d, and they put less strain on your system while trying to run them. A prime example of this that I've found personally is when I was trying to download ace attorney games onto my 3ds. The original trilogy (mostly) uses pixel art, and that only uses around 2100-2500 blocks (look it up), if memory serves. Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, which is a 3d game, uses 10000+ blocks, and it's only one game.
@axo3940 Жыл бұрын
Additionally, I found that occasionally Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright would get jittery in its animation at times, especially when multiple character rigs are on screen and moving at once.

@supercamborg4218 Жыл бұрын
It’s basically converting sketches McPig (the lead guy behind the project) made into lower resolution images while still having a considerable amount of frames of animation and a lot of different animations for tons of unique situations, so it’s not just pixel art. The upcoming game AntonBlast is doing something like the concept but more directly by having almost all the animations hand drawn and then using those hand drawn animations as the base for the game’s sprites.

When you started playing ace attorney music in the background I hoped you would talk about great ace attorney. People that claim that the 2d games look better unconditionally are out of their goddamn minds considering the hd trilogy looks like total ass compared to any of its visual novel counterparts. Not only is the texturing and animation in Chronicles amazing, but the way each background accounts for overall lighting and colour balance is super pleasing to the eye. The only complaint I have is that at high res you can really see the resolution of some screen objects and how they are just planes but that can't be helped given its nature as a 3ds port.

•This comm may would be unseen, but I still want to type about one PS 3 game's art style. Puppeteer. •The whole game's around the theatrical actions and everything looks like a wooden puppets (with some exeptions, like the intros and picture books). | The parts of the level moves with some really cool gear mechanisms. The spotlights moves and stops with characters. When you navigate through the game's options the location changes to a certain segments of the theater (like the dressing room (which also has really nice tunes), or a library). *Game's also interact a lot with the scene itself, but usually by the cut scenes.* My favorite is the level's intro. The lighted cloth shows from the top, releasing an image of a certain locations and/or ‚actors', while the narrator tells you the upcoming events and genuinely makes you stick to your chair. • In conclusion I would tell that if you've interested (or not) please look up the gameplay of Puppeteer. It'll worth it.

Its more in regards to the style you give even to pixel art. Im still an amateur pixel artist but with the many ive seen here n there. Some stand out due to their style/ambience theyre depicted in, and how well they match things like light / shadow in some. Some others resort to a far more simple style and, it can actually work far better sometimes than one overloaded in shadow/light/gradients. But thats just my opinion, im still debating where do i wanna go in terms of style myself

I understand with what you said avout pixel art. In my indie game (which is a point and click adventure) I'm using an art style which is both pixel artt and hand-drawn because I can have more creative freedom with ot and it's supposed to be in a very similar style to the 1993 video game "Day of the Tentacle" which the animations in it are really smooth and highly detailed for a 90s game (even running at 32-bit colour instead of 16-bit which was more popular at the time).

It's not the worst art style, but Fire Emblem's DS titles - Shadow Dragon and New Mystery (remakes of FE1 & 3), have such bland artstyles to the point where even though the gameplay was some of the best in the series with so many difficulty options, the games just didn't feel that fun for some reason, I just didn't feel that engaged even though I did like the lore of that world and the in-game politics. Contrast these with Fire Emblem: Shadow of Valentia (remake of FE2), a game with bland & annoying gameplay but amazing artwork, to the point where I actively enjoy replaying it because the characters just look so charming.
