Thanks for looking in to this. I don't think Ancestry needs more non-source sources though.

yeah, seems like they just did this to add that juicy "1.5 billion records" to their record count

Really Great video. I only wish the automation of Genealogy was being pushed in other directions instead of more hints from the work of other peoples trees. I try to keep my tree as accurate as possible but I constantly run into problems with people who only use sources like this which more often than not leads to errors. I wish these companies would put more effort into automatic transcriptions or something like that which would help us actually find the records. Honestly sources like this can be a helpful first step if your stuck but if you can’t verify it with sources it’s more harmful than it is helpful.

A lot of it looks like a direct copy. I’ve seen it on my tree. What was listed was an exact copy of a branch of my tree.

Thanks for this; I was kind of giving them the side-eye, and you have confirmed that they are pretty much the same as using info from Ancestry trees.

Thanks for picking this topic up, Lisa. I’d spotted it in my hints and going by the name I had decided to avoid it like the plague.

I automatically hide ancestry trees and geneanet. I'm looking for primary sources for my reasonably exhaustive search for documentation. If I can't find them I can always go back and look at them later. My first dozen forays into geneanet were a waste of time. I don't need indexes most of the time. I'd rather read old newspapers or look at military records.

I ran into a brick wall here and there and the trees of others helped me break through them. Unless the info has proper sources, I only make notes until I can verify. I do look for the original proper source and will verify that, but unsourced info I consider just a "lead" to investigate. And I love investigating.

@@lcbflorida Exactly. It is a guide. For whatever reason, I do seem to like getting the Geneanet hints. But, the first thing I do is click through to see who the user is. Sometimes, the data is sourced from an Ancestry tree anyways.

The thing I found interesting about this was the source of the information, the owner of the tree in Geneanet. Some names I recognize, but others I don't. It may be interesting to see who they are and how their tree connects with mine, the ones I don't recognize that is. A rabbit hole when I am stumped.

As with any user (member) generated trees no matter what the site, I will look at them but with a critical eye and and document it with actually formal sources from official records. My philosophy about user generated trees is they can be "clues" "hints" or suggestions especially if it is on a collateral line or a line that I have not done a great deal of research on but it never goes in my documented tree until it is confirmed.

I had noticed it a few weeks ago. Thank you for educating us on looking further into sources. Luckily the only one I did save was one of my cousins who is very thorough, others not so much. I have seen information that I know is incorrect in my family tree.

They did not develop it to be eaten up by Ancestry. Genealogy has been big in France for years. Most people use proper source citations - you really ought to check that out. French Geneanet users much more accurate than ancestry users, actually. I use both so i can vouch for that.

If the information does come from ‘proper’ sources, no matter who put them up there, why can’t I find them? I have searched and searched but just go around in circles and never find any sort of authentic source.

I hate that they catalogue this as records. These are not records at all and the info there is as bad as any other user-created tree collection (if not worst).

It's definitely not all 'user contributed', they've used some sort of database crawler & pinched loads if tree data from some other sites. All the hints for my tree lead to 'source' whith my own fingerprints all over them, just with the dates in French.

I went ahead and made an account. This way I can work on geneanet then just import my own trees to ancestry. You can upload DNA too to help find cousins, especially French lineage.

Fine but however many webs we use unless it's backed up with real data it's just adding on to the collection which might be exact,or maybe not

NOT Great - took some info for a Member of my Family - put me as the Contributor, but they put the WRONG Surname for the Ancestor. This happened with a couple of people. Lots of errors in what I found.

I have nothing good to say about Geneanet. I have found TOO many discrepancies with officoa documents. i reject the entire hint, there may be several correct items but I refuse to give them credit for any correct items. I believe that if I find one error then I will not be able to trust the other items. I have rejected maybe 7 or 8 "hints" from Geneanet. Does anybody check thei hints?

Based on my experience of the Geneanet hint, I ignore it and never look at it. Most of the ones I see are not accurate. They are based on on other trees that copy mistakes. These trees have little to no sources and all have the Ancestry Member Tree hint in the profile that goes in circles. Just because you find someone in a Geneanet hint doesn't mean they actually exist.

I haven't seen any accurate information coming from Geneanet hints so far. Seems to be a lot of bad information that people have copied without any documentation.

Geneanet also Hoovers up information from your own tree! So it looks good but….! I have a unique way of of naming some of my family - and that turns up in geneanet! I just delete immediately 😡

I deleted my tree from there as soon as I figured out why it showed up as a hint at ancestry. familysearch has inaccurate information about my family, too but there are so many trees on there it's impossible to keep correcting it. I'm sure it won't be more than a year before my family is totally wrong in many places.
