If you run across asbestos and it worries you, paint it with shellac until you decide if it is of value. The shellac won't hurt anything and the fibers will be sealed in place. Note that the people who got sick from asbestos were people working with it daily for years, like boiler and steam installers and pipe fitters and ship builders, and people who assembled electric devices with heating coils, etc.

Vulcanite bottle stopper from the Victorian Era. A common find along the shoreline, and river banks in Great Britain.

I remekber working in a machine shop part time in Brattleboro VT. during high school in the late 50s and early 60s, the whole machine shop ( Dunklie's machine shop ) was powered by a single shaft running down the middlev of the shop. Fun fact the belts were made from Bison hides THAT is where the millions of Bison ( buffalo ) that were taken during the 19th century went ( the bones went for fertaliser!!)

Last Item: Volcanite bottle stopper. It looks like it was from WW2 due to the teeny rationing in the top.

I remember the last item, often ceramic with a rubber gasket to prevent leakage from a bottle of pop. Some of them would be pierced as they sometimes had a metal attachment to keep the top tight.

The " bakelite" bottle top is actually a rubber bottle top, missing a red rubber washer. I'm just old enough to remember them.

My dad had a 1955 Chevy with a 327, 4-speed, and lots of other high-performance items. He put asbestos sheets between the headers and the engine to block some of the heat. We worked on that car all the time. I also bought a large house that was built in 1888, before I joined the Marines, and it had a lot of asbestos in it. Did a lot of work on that house, too. I'm now a senior citizen, and have no problems from it, yet.

Lucky you. It can depend on the type of asbestos, but my ex husband developed a virulent form of lung cancer years after exposure to white asbestos.

It depends on the asbestos. "White" asbestos has long threadlike fibres which rarely get into your lungs. Often woven into cloth or sheets. "Blue" asbestos has microscopic needle-like crystals and is very dusty. The crystals can get deep into the lungs, where they cannot be coughed out. Silicosis results. The body tries to 'smother' the particles by covering them with blood proteins and/or scar tissue. That in turn can lead to overgrowth of the surrounding tissue. Tumours or cancer can result.

I can't imagine what that car would be worth today My first job was at a home remodeling company that specialized in vinyl siding. Probably 80% of jobs were tearing off asbestos siding (aka mineral siding) and we were trained to try and smash every piece in the dumpster to maximize space. I'm not sure if one day I'll pay for those years of work.

Those Bremer targets were a remarkably advanced idea for their time. It would still be a clever idea even today. Why don't modern shooting ranges have this electronic scoring?
@melvance7281
@melvance7281 6 ай бұрын
When I was in basic training at Ft Dix ('85) they used pop-up targets at various ranges. If you scored a hit with in the allotted time, it would register it electronically. Also had an observer manually marking the hits. Not sure if this was to keep the observer from cheating or what

Definitely a bottle screw cap - often used on cider bottles. It had a (red?) rubber seal just below the knurled widest piece.

I've got a very similar line shaft in the old shop building on my parents farm. As a kid I remember dad using the shaft to power a drill press and a grinder. It was originally powered by a gas stationary engine but that was long gone by the time I was a kid and dad used a big electric motor to power the shaft. The tools and the motor were sold at an auction after dad died, but the shaft was so big and heavy I talked mom out of including it in the auction for fear of someone getting hurt or the building being damaged trying to remove it.

@@dk9619 Well, I'd be better off if I had some tools and a way to power it ;) Actually I think the drill press is still in an outbuilding. If it is I should get it mounted again, just for memory's sake.

Internal screw bottle stopper. Would have had an orange rubber ring around it to make the seal. Used for all types of bottles from around 1870 to 1970. The first types were made from wood, then later of vulcanite. They were very effective.

We used to put the rubber ring on a cloth peg with a hairgrip and fire matchsticks from it, in the 1960's.

This is what my great great grandma told us as kids 😂 ( A happy late Aprils fools day to you all 😂 )

It's a '50's/60's hard rubber, screw type, beer bottle stopper. ( Watneys?) It would have had a serrated grip and a red soft rubber seal on it. Back then, the beer bottles were returnable.

What you found is an early screwtop for a bottle, usually beer or ginger beer. It is made of vulcanized rubber that has now hardened due to exposure to the weather. It also has been weathered by the sea. These are often collected by mudlarks as they often have the logo of the brewery or company. The early ones were flat topped as that one is, but later had a top that a machanised system could twist at thr bottling company. They are known as vulcanized bottle stoppers.

A little white asbestos caused the cancer which killed my ex husband. Once it gets in your lungs there is no way to remove it. I hope you masked up really well, it can linger and bite you in the bum years later.

So sick of all the "chicken little" responses to carcinogens these days. Our miseducation system leaves people lacking a sense of proportion. That box has hung on the wall for 100 years. Unless you play scratch and sniff with it, it's not going to kill you. The last several generations have worked and gone to school in buildings full of the stuff. If casual exposure killed that easily then the western world would have been depopulated decades ago. It's the people who actually insulated buildings, made machines with the stuff, or experienced unfortunate accidents that had lethal exposure. Most carcinogens require repeated, intense, or prolonged exposure. Yet most people seem to think they will drop dead just from walking past them.
