If you loved this, you will love "The Owl and the Pussycat" opposite George Segal. Barbra plays an uneducated aspiring actress and part time sex worker and George plays an intellectual but struggling writer. How the two come into each others lives and the ensuing drama is hilarious. In the end they eventually fall in love. You won't be disappointed.

When I was younger this was one of my favourite screwball-type comedies! It was based on “Bringing up Baby” with Cary Grant and Kathryn Hepburn. The last line “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” was taken from the film Love Story which starred Ryan O’Neill and was in itself a huge hit. Hence his answer “That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard” was so funny.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, not only because it introduced the world to the genius of Madeline Kahn. The director, Peter Bogdanovich, cast her as Trixie Delight in his next film "Paper Moon" in part to make up for how dowdy her character was in this film. This film is his homage to the screwball comedies of the 30s, and the characters played by Streisand and O'Neal are based on those played by Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant in "Bringing Up Baby." Streisand apparently didn't think she was very good in this role, and concentrated on serious dramas for much of her later career, but I think she's wonderful in the role. Also, I'm pretty sure I figured out I was gay when I saw Ryan O'Neal in nothing but a bowtie and boxers.

OMG, the world of Barbra Streisand! So many solid movies (she was a recording artist before moving into film. Some worth seeing include: Funny Girl, The Way We Were, A Star is Born, Nuts, Yentl, Prince of Tides, and even a recent throwaway film like The Guilt Trip is elevated by her presence). Ryan and Babs did a couple of films together. Their other one is The Main Event, and it’s a lotta fun though not madcap like What’s Up Doc. Ryan went on to make Paper Moon (also directed by the late great Peter Bogdanovich - you’ve already seen Mask with Cher, which is another Bogdanovich film). Paper Moon also stars Ryan’s 10-year-old daughter Tatum O’Neal who was the youngest person to win an Oscar for the best actress category for her sassy performance as Addie Loggins. You’ll love it!

A reason this film has Mel Brooks vibes is that one of the writers was Buck Henry, who had co-created the TV series _Get Smart_ with Mel Brooks. Barbra Streisand's early success was as a singer, but she has always described herself as an actress who sings. While singing at the Blue Angel in Greenwich Village she was invited to audition for a new musical _I Can Get It for You Wholesale._ She was cast in a supporting role and was a great success, receiving a Tony nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She continued singing and making TV appearances. Her first leading role was as Fanny Brice, in the Broadway production of _Funny Girl,_ for which she received another Tony nomination (losing to Carol Channing for _Hello, Dolly_ ). When, a few years later, _Funny Girl_ was made into a movie Streisand was cast to reprise her role. For her film performance she won a Best Actress Oscar (sharing it with Katherine Hepburn for _The Lion in Winter,_ the only time there has been a tie in this category.) If you've never seen _Funny Girl_ put it on the list. It'd be great for the channel.

YOU MAKE ME SO HAPPY!!!!!! Okay, so a coupla notes: The grocery delivery boy was Ryan O'Neal's brother. The lady sitting next to Judy on the plane was their mother. I was surprised that you didn't notice Randy Quaid. I got to meet the bailiff (Graham Jarvis) not too long ago. The stairs that Judy thought was a good road are in Alta Plaza Park, and the production did not have permission from the city to drive vehicles down the steps. As you can see from the scene the steps were badly damaged, and it's my understanding that one can still see the damage today. There's lots more, but with 953 comments ahead of me, I'm sure everybody has already filled you in. It's almost impossible to choose, but my favorite line is "How much is it without the buffering?" Oh, and you are now obligated to watch Paper Moon.

Another great film is Paper Moon by Peter Bogdanovich also, with Ryan O'Neal, his little daughter at the time Tatum O'Neal [9 years old, she won a best supporting actress Oscar]. Also stars Madeline Kahn ["Eunice" in this film]. Other screwball comedies from the old days that are excellent include It Happened One Night, Arsenic and Old Lace, His Girl Friday, My Man Godfrey, The Lady Eve... the list is endless...

Very nice reaction, Ashleigh. 😊 Barbra Streisand started out as a singer and already had a job as a singer in a nightclub as a teenager. She got her first record contract at the age of 20 and was awarded a Grammy for her debut album two years later. But she probably wanted to be an actress from the very beginning and so, in addition to music, she also went to Broadway to play theater and thus get her start. In 1968, she made her first movie 'Funny Girl' and immediately won an Academy Award for Best Actress. Very impressive for the time and all round a self-made woman, you can say, who never let herself be put off.

The judge is in the very beginning of Young Frankenstein. The guy who plays Hugh is also in Young Frankenstein. The line "Love Means You Never Have to Say Your Sorry" is from the movie "Love Story" which is tragic and Ryan O'Neal is in it.

Ryan and Barbra teamed up again in “The Main Event”, but “What’s Up, Doc?” is probably Streisand’s funniest film. “A Star is Born” and “ Yentl” are great musical dramas staring Babs. She also directed “Yentl”. “Funny Girl” was her first movie.

Soooo many appearances in this film by actors who gained fame later (such as Sorrel Booke as the man who kept tackling the rich woman and later played Boss Hogg in the Dukes of Hazard, and a very young Randy Quaid in the dinner scene where they were all under the table). Glad you finally got around to this one!

Both Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal have done some great movies (individually). Streisand transitioned from singing to stage acting and from stage acting to film acting, so the singing came first. She released three albums before she ever starred in any films. She has quite a few films I would highly recommend for more reactions to Streisand -- "The Way We Were" (with Robert Redford) and "Prince Of Tides" (with Nick Nolte), to name only a couple. Ryan O'Neal's biggest blockbuster was probably "Love Story" -- an iconic 70s movie, that the line "Love Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry" came from. Another great one is "Paper Moon" (with O'Neal and his daughter Tatum). It was also a big hit during the 70s. Thanks for this great reaction and discussion! ✌💙✌

The Russian was Ken Mars who was the the Police Officer in Young Frankenstein with the thick German accent. Streisand started as a night club & theater singer, branched out into movies, won Academy Awards (including the first woman to win one as a composer and was the first woman to write, produce, direct & star in a major studio film). She has sold nearly 150 million records worldwide with 40 Grammy nominations and 8 wins.

Streisand's last line ("Love means never having to say you're sorry.") was a catchphrase from the movie "Love Story", starring Ryan O'Neal (just a couple of years before this movie). Which is why his reply is so funny ("That's the dumbest thing I ever heard!")

If I understand correctly, the Servidor was a feature in high class hotels especially in 1920's NYC, that allowed a guest to leave their garments there, for hotel dry-cleaning service. That way, the guest didn't have to open the door. A more current name for this type of function at hotels that even have them anymore, is a Valet Door.

Small correction about Judy's college experience: she never finished any of them; she was no degrees in anything. She soaked up a whole bunch of knowledge from a whole bunch of classes, but she never actually finished any of her degrees, so on paper she has nothing to show for it. She is, as you said, a professional college student: just go to another college, pick a major, go to a bunch of classes, until your chaotic nature gets you expelled again, and then find another college and repeat! I was VERY impressed with how long you were keeping up with the bags, which was which. I never could!

National Lampoon Vacation’s “Cousin Eddie” (Randy Quaid) as well as Independence Day’s “Russell” the heroic crop-duster at 12:31 , under the banquet room table saying *”Vocal reverberation under spinal pressure?”* You did a pretty good impression of “Simon” at 20:20 ! 👍🏼 23:24 the guy who has no idea why garbage cans are chasing him down a sidewalk, jumps a wall onto an outdoor cafe table, and the diner looking up like the guy fell from the sky! The entire chase scene cracks me up, but the bit with the cans is where I lose it!

the reason this felt like a Mel Brooks movie is because it was co-written by Buck Henry, who co-wrote the TV show Get Smart with Mel Brooks. and several Mel Brooks regulars were in this movie. the judge played the preacher in Blazing Saddles, the hotel manager was also in Blazing saddles. Hugh was in Mel Brooks' original 1968 The Producers movie as well as playing the police inspector in Young Frankenstein.

I love this movie. It was very much inspired by the comedy "Bringing Up Baby" starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. The multiple suitcase plot point is borrowed from the 60s French film "Oscar" which was remade with Sylvester Stallone (very underrated. You should watch it). Director Christopher McQuarrie said the car chase in this film inspired the car chase in the lastest "Mission: Impossible" movie.

Thank you for reacting to this, Ashleigh. Very few people know about it. My dad took a station wagon full of kids to see this movie on my 12th birthday. I don't remember the movie from that time but I do remember my dad laughing so hard he was coughing up popcorn and soda. He was a very quiet and unhappy guy so that is a treasured memory. It ultimately became a family favorite for spouse and kids. Another super fun one in this genre that is tougher to find (although it is on MGM+ with a free trial) is called Surrender with Michael Caine and Sally Field. I think it suits your taste and intellect.

At the start of the movie when Judy walks across the street and the two motorcycles just miss her, well, that was the real Barbara doing that scene, not a stunt lady. Barbra started as a singer who went to acting, although it was early in her career and she continued with both. (She was in HS Choir with Neil Diamond.) The actor as the judge went on to play parts in a number of Brooks' films, I'm sure you're remembering him as the preacher in Blazing Saddles. ("Son, you're on your own".) Thank you so much for this, great start for the year. (And I hadn't heard about Ryan's passing, dang, so many lately.)

A few members of the "Mel Brooks Repratory Players" are in "What's Up Doc?": Madeline Kahn (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World: Part 1), Kenneth Mars (The Producers, Young Frankenstein), Liam Dunn (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie), and John Hillerman (Blazing Saddles, History of the World: Part 1). One of the writers of "What's Up Doc?" was Buck Henry, who co-created the sitcom "Get Smart" with Mel Brooks. Henry's best-known work is probably "The Graduate", which he co-wrote and had a small part in. "The Graduate" starred Dustin Hoffman and Mrs. Mel Brooks - Anne Bancroft.
