To be completely fair towards Jaden, it's not all his fault. Sure, he seems like a pretentious jerk, I won't argue that, but this young boy probably never have been challenged or had to face any consequences since he's born. And as the movie goes, Shyamalan can be very bad at directing actors. Just look at Mark Whalberg in The Happening, a very decent actor that acts as if he had a pineapple shoved up his ass and talking as if he was afraid to push it further in his rectum(sorry for the image but that's what I imagine each time I see him act or speak in this movie) ; ) I know it could be that he's just a bad actor, but jeez! The dialogues! They're not the worst I've heard but darn. Just the techno babble in this film is enough to drive me nuts(and I oddly like it, reminds me of Star Trek, except that Star Trek have really good writing and dialogues) Still, his cringy acting is really funny. The thing I don't understand though is his father: again, I know that he's putting himself in the shadow to give the spotlight to Jaden but for the love of Pete JUST ACT!!! XD

@anikmonette21405 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert in that field but if I remember correctly plants produces carbon dioxide at night, and oxygen during the day, and in their life cycle they produce as much waste than O2 so I don't think it would really matter. Not only that, it took millions of years for the oxygen levels to drop as what it is now, so again a mere thousand years wouldn't really affect anything either. The problem is that plants and trees need that oxygen to grow so if there's less oxygen I'm not sure the vegetation would be as luxuriant as it is in the movie. Nature would take back its right but yeah, if oxygen and light is too low(don't forget the huge active volcano right next to a beautiful jungle that blocks the sun), not to mention temperature that drops below zero at night and... nah, everything's dead in those conditions. Shyamalan never took care of a plant by himself, and if he lived in a colder climate he would know that you can't grow anything safely until May! Yeah, cold kills plants. I saw the movie and all but I just noticed that it would never work! The leaves would freeze as well as the sap, and the great, daily temperature variation would finish these trees and plants off. XD

*Jaden Smith* was simply HANDED everything he has and this is usually the cause of becoming a genuine, grade-A douchebag. When you don't have to actually work for anything and get everything in the world given to you then you have absolutely NOTHING to strive for in life. As such, a person doesn't have to be kind or even nice to others to get the things they want because they already have everything and they require nothing from you, which means they can always feed that arrogant part of their personality which we all have in some regard, only most of us have had to suppress it in order to function in society and get along with others so you don't get fired and lose everything you have. People's general behavior is directly related to this...

@robinlinh8 жыл бұрын
+Johan Moberg nah. Rich people are different from rich-born people. If they think they can be rich while being an incooporate idiot then you are so delusional. The biggest reason is that when a fight or something happen, people tend to use the situation to take what they want. Poor people hate rich people, that is a fact, so when the time come they will try to bring down those who have more than them, and then call it justice, or equal, or some shit like that. I myself is not rich, but I admire those who can get rich (by them self of course) because that is really hard and take a whole lot of determination

Not that anything was scientific in that schlock, but fear is absolutely not a choice. It's a natural reaction based entirely on your body's chemistry, and a very vital evolutionary trait. You become fearful as a reaction to certain stimuli, pretty much the exact opposite of choice as your brain doesn't weigh things up and decide after long deliberation, it just reacts. To NOT fear is arguably a choice as you take the time to analyse a situation and come to the conclusion that fear is not warranted, but even then, you need to emotionally accept the logic you are applying as sound.

Of course we need to stop teaching the youth about the past, I mean, so what if communism is tried again and again and we risk about 100 other Joseph Stalin's, all that we care about, is the future!!!! You're so smart Jaden Smith, I can't believe I've been such an idiot to think that most trees were not in fact blue, thank you for guiding me.
@MrLaxdude8910 жыл бұрын
Tom Adams I'm a Trotskyist... I'm just saying if we don't know the past of communism and how many times it has declines, there's no way we could improve it, just destroy it again and again. By the way, even though technically Stalin is not a communist, you're wrong, very wrong, Stalin killed 60 million at his own hands. Hell, Lenin and Trotsky, 2 figures I admire immensely more than any president we've ever had, were no saints when it came to leadership.
@MrLaxdude8910 жыл бұрын
Tom Adams Well Stalin's government system based on communism, unfortunately, had a lot to do with the death toll, the fact that Americans were capitalists had absolutely nothing to do with their bloodshed in the situation you describe. Now look, I have contempt for capitalism, I do, but right now it's the one form of government we've fucked up the least, it's the one we'll have to deal with for now. We're not ready for communism, I think one day, but not today.

I've read that Will Smith decided to play a character with no charm or personality to allow his son to shine more. Which really backfired because it made one of the things that could have been a silver lining of the movie, Smith's charisma, a non-factor.

You know, when I first saw the notice for this movie pop up on IMDB, I was willing to give it a chance. It looked like M. Night Shamalyn was going back to his roots of Sixth Sense, focusing on relationships and the effect on the supernatural by them. It could have been "The Road" in space, showing a bond whilst depicting a grim portrait of humanity's violent nature and how we should care for the... NOPE. Silly me, thinking Shamalyn could actually make something that deep.

People were sitting up in the theater laughing at “After Earth.” It was ridiculous! Especially the scenery where Jaden’s character gets dropped into a giant bird’s nest to sit with a brood of baby birds. LOL!
@reynaldolunajr.69092 жыл бұрын
What's wrong is that it's a thirty minute short story extended to feature length without any added content. It has a plot better suited to an anthology than it's own movie. Imagine a grandfather telling this story and two others to his grandson in an ordinary child's bedroom. Later at the end of the film we find that these fantastic stories are actually true and the grandfather is Will Smith and his son is now one of the leaders of a group of space explorers. What seemed like fiction is factual history. And the room is part of a grand living space on a great starship travelling to another galaxy destined for their new home.
@iidirectxii754510 жыл бұрын
What's wrong with After Earth ? One word, EVERYTHING.
@jeanlucncoelho10 жыл бұрын
I actually understood the plot. The earth was evacuated 1000 years ago because "everything on this planed evolved to kill humans." 1000 years isn't enough to undo evolution.
@Demogorgon4710 жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember that whole new wave of speciation that occured lately when all the animals started giving birth to ultra dangerous animals capable of over throwing all of mankind. It was in all the papers. Guess we better evacuate earth cause the animals are revolting and what not and not even our mighty gee I dunno GUNS AND TANKS AND BOMBS COULD stop WILD FREAKING ANIMALS!......Seriously did Will Smith even try when he thought up this story or even have the most rudimentary understand of evolution before he made it? I mean I kind of don't understand why everything would evolve kill humans suddenly, I guess there was massive selection pressure on ripping apart homonids.
@jeanlucncoelho10 жыл бұрын
Demogorgon47 the movie is in the future.
@Demogorgon4710 жыл бұрын
Jean-Luc Coelho Yeah thanks captain obvious. I'm saying....never mind. Just forget it. I was trying to agree with you and what not, I know that 1000 years is not enough time to......undo....evolution (if what you mean is for animals to evolve so differently that the previous adaptions are now completely even more adapted so it's so different to the adaptions of the time before) I was simply joining in on what you had to say and expanding on what you had to say but whatever. Apparently it went over your head. That's cool, that's fine. S'all good.
@jeanlucncoelho10 жыл бұрын
Demogorgon47 What I meant is that the movie could be a couple million years in the future. With humans having an absurdly large population, animals could very well have evolved to prey on them.
@Demogorgon4710 жыл бұрын
Jean-Luc Coelho Yeah but come one 1 million yeas of evolution would mean we'd be evolving too. Animals can't prey on us so easily because we live in such an environment with such high infrastructure and technological advancements such that no other animal besides us could ever be top dog. There's no evolutionary lineage that could make an animal capable of over powering human technology especially 1 million years of human evolution.

First, I'd like to say thank you for saving me from seeing this movie. I had been looking for the video through Red Box and my library. I was just curious and interested in it. So, I had just tripped on your review and found it valuable. I'm a Biologist and a science teacher. Sometimes, for extra credit, I let my students watch a sci-fi movie and write an essay on the real science or the "bad science" they observed. This would be a fun challenge for some of my 8th graders. I wonder how many would actually catch on to the misinformation in the film. Thanks for keeping Bad Movies posted.

What's really awful, is *even from the movie* you get the impression that Jayden is screaming "no dad, I really don't want to do this, I just want you to love me!" What's the last line in the film? Something like "Dad... I wanna work with Mom now."

I just wish the film was less tedious but it has funny moments, like the scene where Jaden is asleep and dreaming of his dead sister, which just screams at him out of nowhere while looking like a zombie. Part that have zero purpose, except to scare the people foolish enough to watch this thing in its entirety and to test if they didn't fall asleep by then. xD

It doesn't mean it was better on his part. It just means that he had less responsibilities and the Smiths were to blame for most of this movie.
