Please do a review of Korra next. Keep in mind though that there was only going to be 1 season of Korra. Nickelodeon gave the creators the green light to do a 2nd season after season 1 so they had to scramble a bit to come up with a good story for season 2 which is not as bad as people say. After season 2 they got the green light to do a 3rd and 4th season so it's more concise and flows together. The 4th season actually never aired on tv, it was on their website and getting up and waiting for it at 11am so I could watch it was really fun. Also read the comics, they really expand the lore and answer a few questions and read the novels about Avatar Kyoshi and Avatar Yangchen. They're really good too.

I just wish they'd use the TV budget to adapt the Kyoshi books into live action instead. They're much darker and more dramatic, and they'd fit the tone they want for adults perfectly. Plus they've never been on screen, so there are fewer comparisons.
@LAnite4307 ай бұрын
Tbh I wish adaptations were just way less common. I’m okay with different forms of media portraying a universe. I’d rather get a new Avatar instead of the same thing but live action. @evanmarcus5975 That's what I'm saying dude. Unfortunately like with most adaptations of things, they tend to start at the beginning or the with the most popular part.

That would have been better, even if I'd have preferred a cartoon adaptation instead. But at least doing that story would be a fresh take on the universe and something that hasn't been done before, which might been fun to watch. And it'd have probably been easier to turn the novels into a series as compared to a 60 episode show, they're much shorter and contain less content that needs to be adapted.

If they don't do well, then they aren't really 'tainting' the legacy of ATLA since they're mostly standalone (Aside from continuations and prequels), and it lets them open the door to any manner of stories in the universe.

Actually, a lot of fans hate all the extra development given to Ozai. He wasn't supposed to be a real character in the original series, just a sort of representation of the worst of the Fire Nation and the war as a whole. That's why they used him so sparingly, when you use a character like that too much they lose a lot of their presence and just become this bland caricature that's hard to take seriously. Like, the show actually had Zuko fight Ozai in the Agni Kai, and like- what? That was a super important part of the original where Zuko was banished because he refused to fight. It showed off how cruel Ozai was by burning his son even when his son was on his knees begging for forgiveness. It showed how naive Zuko used to be, believing his father would forgive him if he didn't fight. And then Zuko almost wins but doesn't because of personal choices? What the Hell?! Why should we be concerned about Aang beating the Fire Lord when the Fire Lord loses to his preteen son?! Aang doesn't need to master any other elements, he could just go to the Fire Nation right now and beat Ozai! He's already beaten Zuko by this point! Sure, this series gives Ozai more scenes but they add literally NOTHING to Ozai's character. In fact, all they've done is take away.
@Onaterdem7 ай бұрын
Same with Azula. By humanizing the character, you take away from her SUPPOSED character, which is perfection. The cracks slowly started to show, and she completely broke at the end of Book 3, but here, she's on a cyclical journey - angsty rebellious teen who cannot reach perfection, reaches perfection, then drops back down to the exact same place. One more thing, about Ozai: Everybody likes the 41st Division change but it's just so. Unbelievably. Stupid. When you look at it for more than 2 seconds. Zuko fought his father to spare the 41st Division, then his father punishes him by sparing the 41st Division. People say it's to "remind him of his failure" but it's not - he DOESN'T FAIL, he GETS EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTED! Not only is this utterly stupid on every level, it also dumbs down Ozai very much, because what, you cancelled a military plan just to "teach Zuko a lesson"? You sacrifice another, more experienced division? What the hell?
@areeba70456 ай бұрын
@@Onaterdem the point about azula is so important. we're not supposed to be seeing azula's side of the story, she's supposed to be a terrifying antagonist who's so powerful to the point she doesn't need to use bending or even regular combat to break someone down. now we're given her perspective and we have to watch her go on some kind of weird hero's journey even though we know how her story will end with her breakdown which makes it all pointless. nobody wants to watch a character start out at one point, excel and then go straight back to where they started
@capofantasma976 ай бұрын
Fear of the unknown of seemingly unstoppable forces. The Fire Lord and Azula are a lot more unsettling when they're shrouded in mystery, and we never see them getting defeated in the show until the very end, leaving us wondering what will happen the entire time. Instead the Netflix adaptation completely dismantled the story and the way all main characters were written for no reason. Why even make a readaptation and then actively choosing to not make it accurate at all?
@Onaterdem6 ай бұрын
@@capofantasma97 TBH, an adaptation making changes is perfectly fine, and expected. Avatar the Last Airbender wasn't a flawless show, especially Book 1. Although most were minor flaws, there was room for improvement nonetheless. But instead of, you know, fixing the flaws, they ruined what worked in the first place.
@bumbabees6 ай бұрын
that last line about sums up all the characters in this show. even the side characters, miraculously. its almost impressive how the writers managed to miss the point of literally EVERY single character, even ones who were barely present for more than a few episodes the whole show. almost every single change is either pointless, stupid, or actively takes away something and makes it worse. if they wanted to adapt something, they couldve done better with something like korra. although ive never seen it, i know its a lot more controversial than the original show. they couldve fixed things that did not work, people wouldve been less critical because korra isnt as insanely beloved as avatar, win win. they couldve even adapted the novels, or the comics. but hey, i guess money is more important, and what better why to get that than to mooch off an beloved childhood show?

The original creators were actually supposed to help work on the live action show but left due to “creative differences” of course. Meanwhile, shows like the One Piece live action and the Fallout show are being praised because they’re actually good shows on their own and the og creators were also involved with the production. It really seems like the best solution for making legitimately good live action adaptations of animated shows is actually listening and working together with the original creators…shocker.

It's like everyone forgets that Aang is actually a master and with water being the closest element spiritually to air, it's one of the reasons he gets it faster besides being the Avatar. Technically all Avatars are prodigies in some way being with the element that suits them the closest whether it's their first element or not. Avatars will get them faster because they have done it before in a past life, it doesn't mean they don't struggle, they just have to get in the right mindset. It's like learning to walk after having amnesia after a car crash , you know you can do it,you see other people do it, and you just need to believe that you can do it.

Also, a small correction on your description of Aang in the first episode of the Netflix show: He doesn't run away. He's stressed out about having just learned that he's the avatar (Right before the festival starts, good job Gyatso), and because he can't sleep he asks Appa to take him on a flight to clear his head. He's literally just talking a walk, which is 100% a reasonable thing to be doing in his shoes. Except the show still frames it like he ran away, so WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE CHANGE?
@IsraelLlerena7 ай бұрын
!!!!!!!!!! Yes!! There was no point to change it if people still think and say he ran away. It felt useless
@Onaterdem7 ай бұрын
And how about Gyatso appearing in the Spirit World? Not only is it a major lore breaker, but it also completely undermines the sadness of the whole situation. Now, in life, you mostly don't get to say goodbye. You say "see you later", and then the person dies and you never see them or talk to them again. That gives weight to death. That lack of closure. Also, in life, you may believe, or hope, but you don't KNOW that the afterlife exists. Not knowing if you'll reconnect with your loved ones, again, gives weight to death. Otherwise, you'll miss them, but in more of a hopeful way - why be sad if you'll eventually be together again, and forever this time? Without these 2 factors, death may as well be meaningless. In NATLA's case, Gyatso just appears in the Spirit World, talks to Aang, says goodbye, essentially says that the afterlife exists and tells Aang to not worry or feel guilt. BOOM. Aang's whole character is ruined, congratulations.

So a few things I do feel like I should mention. 1) Korra isn't bad, it's divisive. The Legend of Korra makes a lot of weird, and honestly bad, decisions during it's run that was a combination of multiple factors that I'm not going into right now. With that said, it has also done a lot of things pretty great as well. It just failed to live up to the expectations of the original ATLA that has a number of fans treating it worse than it actually is. Personally I say the show is worth watching as the positives do generally outweigh the bad, and understand that the fan base generally agrees that Season 2 was just a mistake. 2) I think the big reason why people weigh the Netflix show higher then [There is no Movie inside of Ba Sing Se] is because there does feel like an honest attempt from the Netflix show to actually be faithful. It doesn't, but there are all sorts of tiny nods and all sorts of other things that shows that this was created by people who really do know the show, whereas the movie that doesn't exist feels like someone read a script of the first season once and just went based off of that. 3) I want to make a big suggestion of looking into the actual books when you can. Specifically the Rise of Kyoshi and the Shadow of Kyoshi novels specifically as they are two of the best Avatar content we've gotten in years, but because they are novels, they are easily overlooked by most fans. (I did myself until I ended up catching a glimpse of the story and decided to look into them myself.) Like I know that it isn't usually content you look at, but they are completely worth it if you want to really get to know some of these characters that are barely touched on in the show.

I appreciate a lot of korra, particularly the worldbuilding in season 1 and how it expanded and evolved the world a generation later. However I don't think it outweighs the bad for me personally, as I think the main characters just aren't very compelling or deep. Korra is an okay character but not super interesting, not even a fraction as interesting any single character in ATLA. Mako straight up just sucks and is not an entertaining or compelling character in the slightest. And the other guy is pretty alright but feels like a pathetic stand-in for the role Sokka took in ATLA. I really like Tenzin and tophs daughter, but I just couldn't enjoy the show that much following the extremely mid main trio. I did like the concept of the separatists and I liked amon, but I already know seasons 2 and 3 sucks so I'm not even gonna watch them

@@semskguy I am surprised that anyone told you season 3 sucked. There is some weirdness with it as it's forced to just deal with some bad writing choices in season 2, but it is generally the one that most tend to see as the best written (as the writers were actually given time to come up with a proper arc this time then being rushed by Nick during season 2.)
@vuivraalbastra6 ай бұрын
I see Korra as a pretty good show with lots of a wasted potential, but a bad Avatar show. Its greatest sin is that it takes beloved elements from TLA and removes all their charm (metal bending and lightning bending are now common place, people didn't learn bending from specific entities but they were gifted with it by the big turtle, etc.), and because of that to me it feels like it takes away from the worldbuilding more than it adds. The character writing is sloppy, which is a shame because on paper these characters and their journeys sound really good, the execution is just "ehhh" at best. That's what I first think about when I remember LOK and not the good parts like Tenzin, having an Avatar be scared that they are going to lose their bending, the metalbenders city etc. I genuinely think they should remake Korra's story instead of Aangs' and fix its glaring flaws, but as it stands I can't genuinely recommend it to Avatar fans.

6:36 You nailed that feeling after finishing Avatar perfectly. I just watched the original Avatar myself for the first time because of the netflix version and I've been scouring for more Avatar content since then. I usually don't re-watch TV shows, but I very quickly watched it over again (The Good Place is the only other one I can remember doing this) and that still isn't enough. I can totally understand why this fandom is still going so strong after 20 years. And I must say, now is a great time to be joining the fandom. The voice actors for Zuko and Korra host a podcast together, the voice actress for Toph posts regular content on her youtube channel (including reactions to every episode), and Avatar Studios is coming out with a new movie and it sounds like there is additional stuff in the works too. I'm glad there is new stuff to consume because it is so good I just can't turn my brain off from it. 😄

I am such a person. I watched the very unpopular movie adaptation first, which got me hooked on to the series as a whole. I understand why so many hold the movie in vitriolic contempt, but it was my introduction to ATLA and there are elements of it that I think were well done. For instance, I LOVE James Newton Howard's musical score, and the scene where Aang confronts his grief over losing his people and effectively waterbends the Fire Nation into submission (without sinking any ships) is the movie's greatest moment...maybe it's only great moment. I think I'm the only person to have this perspective, though. All I ever hear is "hate it, hate it, hate it".

The netflix one, though does have a cool pattern in it when you look closely(which is cool), just....looks like someone painted an arrow on his head instead of an actual tattoo. Also the intricate pattern from the movie just makes more sense to me in my head since i'd guess they wouldn't have a tattoo gun pre electricity buuut fantasy world. They make their own rules and thats cool too x3

For real people need to stop making live action versions of animated stuff. Live action one piece isn't even that good. It's just the best we have got
@cullenlatham23667 ай бұрын
i generally agree with the sentiment but... that second sentence is blasphemous (hyperbolic)! *beyond this point is my pedantic arguing on the value OP doesnt see, but it is only my two cents. I dont want to argue it any further, so only read on if you care. I am not intending to start a debate, only explain my differing opinion.* it might not do anything new, but there was actual value in the adaptation. The key is the heart and spirit of the show remained unchanged for one piece (save for some tonal issues with garp that could be easily fixed if given the run time to see how they re-integrate him), but most other live action "adaptations" show a level of shame for the source by failing to recognize tonal changes require drastic script overhauls to the point it cant realistically be called the same story anymore. The value of one piece's live action adaptation is not in the story, but in the world. Practical sets for the fantastical ships of the show restore that sense of child-like wonder and belief in magic that adults tend to compartmentalize into the freedoms of animation, never to be seen in reality. Easy example: Beratie. If it was affordable, i would very much enjoy that style of restaurant boat, and it might even be more fantastical than the anime. Seeing the inside of Kaya's mansion helps sell the rich girl elements that are very easy to forget in the animation where she is just a normal, though terminally ill, girl who just happens to live in a larger house than normal. I'll say it again: there is value in live action one piece, but it is important not to overlook the fact the creator was directly involved in making sure it remained faithful to his initial vision. Oda remained on board the entire time; avatar studios did not. Love them or hate them, there is a novelty to live action adaptations, and the Goldilocks zone they thrive in is finding a way to prove the magic of the animation can exist in reality with enough ingenuity WITHOUT loosing the heart and soul of the source. Want a quick metric? compare the source to the adaptation first by "do both products hold up on their own without prerequisite knowledge from the other?", then by "do the products maintain the same general 'vibe' which necessitates very little deviation in tone between the 2?" and finally "do i personally enjoy watching both, regardless of what biases i am using?" Only when all 3 pass does the adaptation work. Most bad ones cut so much they dont function on their own anymore. mediocre ones disrespect the 'vibe' of the source, even if it stands on its own. good ones bring joy because the balancing act is maintained, then defined by how wobbly the spinning plates are.
@bunnyleaningonasquishedbun55426 ай бұрын
It's funny because OP is the more difficult series to adapt, the first half alone is worth nearly a hundred episodes yet they still managed to capture the spirit of OP in just 8 episodes. Maybe it has something to do with the original creator being on board, I dunno

2 problems with the movie: the casting is borderline racist and the bending is just awful, that single floating rock scene is one of the worst vfx shots ive ever seen. For the Legend of Korra, important to note that Nickelodeon exes only renewed the show season by season, and took every opportunity to medal in the writing and plot direction. The showrunners did the best they could with what they had with Korra, and its not a bad show, its just not as good as the Last Airbender where they had full control and knew they had 3 seasons to tell their story properly
@LoreSolver47 ай бұрын
I have mixed feelings on TLoK, so I'm going to break it season by season. S1: Actually good. The romance was a mess, but the romance wasn't the best in ATLA either. Other than that, I liked Amon and the main cast. S2: Awful. Won't go into to much detail, but it just feels like they were forced to change the story halfway through, and it made the season an inconcistent mess, both with ATLA and season 1. S3: Overrated. It felt like it dragged on and started to get reptative. If I had a nickel for every time the main gang had a fight with the red lotus, I would have an entire dollar. S4: Just let it end. It just felt hollow, with so many random choises out of nowhere. Just a dissapointing finale. To close it all out: I don't blame the show's creators. They tried to tell a good story, but both studio medaling and poor execution let to it failing to capture the feeling of ATLA and thier own vision. Sorry this was so long, but I just wanted to put my own full opinion on TLoK.

Season 2 is actually my favorite and I think some of the best moments from the show come from there (Nuktuk, introduction of Varrick and Zhu Li, Dark Avatar Unalaq, etc.) I also thought that having Unalaq as the villain was very interesting as he was Korra’s uncle, and seeing Korra being on not so great terms with her family was not something we had seen yet, and his whole personality with the spiritual aspect reminds me of Arthur Harrow from the Moon Knight series. On the contrary, I would say that Zaheer was a boring villain who felt like he popped out of nowhere, had a forgettable crew, and a cheap excuse to be an Airbender.

I really like avatar but I’m not a fan of Anng not wanting to kill the fire lord. It comes out of almost nowhere. If it had been mentioned from the start of the show that Anng didn’t want to kill the fire lord he wanted to find another way around the problem and a good amount of the episodes focused on that that would be fine but that’s not what happens. Anng not wanting to kill The fire lord isn’t brought up until the series finale and it feels so stupid. It just makes Anng look like the biggest dumbass. Anng saying that he has never killed Anyone is so laughably untrue. Energy bending also sucks since that also comes out of completely nowhere and was not mentioned at all until the finale. I’m also not at fan of everything with Tophs parents. it’s never concluded in anyway and we’re only ever told about how apparently Tophs parents didn’t love her but we’re never shown that. In fact that doesn’t even make sense. They sent guys to go and bring her back to them. If they didn’t care about her, why would they do that? Regarding the Toph's parents part, it's very common for rich and/or politically-tied parents to love their children only as far as their usage as heirs or as bargaining tools. If they had absolute assurance that Toph could not carry on their legacy, they'd have disowned her, if not abandoned her.

I also have a bone to pick with the OG series on this. I can accept that Aang has pacifist principles and is reluctant to go against such principles (even though his actions have certainly resulted in people's deaths, which I don't think is adequately addressed beyond his fear of being unable to control the Avatar state); what I can't stand is the stupid ass way the plot maneuvers to where he gets to defeat the Fire Lord AND hold true to his principles. A giant lion turtle coming out of nowhere and teaching him energy bending before he goes and fights the big bad? I didn't know the plot was just another element Aang had to learn to bend before the end of the series. 🙄
@JaceAce226 ай бұрын
The Netflix Last Airbender does a lot of work to not capitalize on the fact that it is redoing the Last Airbender. Aang is serious about being the Avatar, and displays a sense of ownership in his role, but contradicts and halts his own autonomy by being afraid of fighting for others because he's so guilty about letting 100 years go by disappointing the world for not doing his job. Also, he's way too concerned about the risk of exposing his "Last Airbender"-ness. In short, Netflix Aang is super annoying for constantly talking about wanting to do his job, but he extends the runtime and wastes cut character growth details by repeatedly expositing that he also doesn't want to hurt and disappoint others for taking so long.
